Titanfall Beta Impressions: Pilots and Rockets and Mechs, Oh My

titanfall-bannerOne of the most hotly anticipated games of 2014 just wrapped up its beta testing period. For the majority of interested gamers, this was their first chance to play the heavily hyped and critically acclaimed Titanfall.

I somehow managed to get into the beta despite the fact that I rather detest multiplayer in first-person shooters. Granted, that’s mostly a function of my being terrible at FPSs. Single-player campaigns, like BioShock, I’m fine. Throw me into something like Planetside 2 and I’ll be into a sub-0.1 K/D ratio. Could Titanfall convert me from FPS neophyte to another shooter junkie? No but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still fun.

candy-crush-saga-money-headerLittle things like trademark disputes, intellectual property law abuse and being a frontrunner for The Consumerist’s worst company in America poll doesn’t stop the progress train.

King Digital, the company behind Candy Crush Saga, filed an application with the SEC for an Initial Public Offering of shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

What If Doctor Who was an American Show?

When the ill-fated Doctor Who TV movie was made back in 1996, it was a co-production between the BBC and the American network Fox. The movie was made as a pilot for a revival of the show that would be produced by Fox for an American audience. However, while the movie was a success in Britain, it was a flop in America which meant that the series was never made.

But what if Doctor Who wasn’t just revived as an American series? What if the whole of Doctor Who was produced in America? Maybe these American actors would have played The Doctor. What do you think?

Comic Book Pull List for February 19, 2014

new-warriors-1Another week, another edition of the pull list. You know, I write this post every week and every week, I let myself get farther behind on my comics. I just need to set aside a couple of hours to just read comics. My only concern is letting everything else fall behind on the blog. I really could use a second hand to get things posted.

Anyway, I’ve got four comics that might interest you this week. It’s not a new series but I’ve heard nothing but good things about DC’s Wonder Woman series which releases its 28th issue this week. Marvel brings back an old series in the Marvel Now universe with New Warriors #1. If you’re looking for a weird cross-over comic, The Lone Gunmen and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cross paths in The X-Files: Conspiracy – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1. And Larime Taylor is back with A Voice in the Dark #4.

GTA Online Earns Over $60 Million from Microtransactions in First Three Months

gta-online-headerWell, we can criticize games with microtransactions all we want for being cash grabs but we can’t complain too much when they are very good games and very successful at grabbing cash.

Based on their recent third-quarter financial earnings report and an interview with MCV, it looks as though Grand Theft Auto Online’s microtransactions has brought in upwards of $66 million for publisher Rockstar Games and owners Take-Two Interactive.

Critics Corner: The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC

the-last-of-us-left-behind-dlc-headerGiven the epic story of The Last of Us, expectations for the game’s first were through the roof. Very seldom are DLCs better than the main campaign and I think the reviews indicate that for the Left Behind DLC. Many critics say that it’s as good as the main campaign but not better.

However, could you really get better than the story in The Last of Us in a DLC? I guess you would have to be able to define what could have been better and how to make it better to improve upon the original in a DLC. The story was just about perfect, in my opinion, so all that was left to improve on was the gameplay. The Last of Us isn’t a gameplay driven game so it wouldn’t make much sense to overhaul gameplay for a DLC that people are playing for the story.

Let’s face it, DLC is a tricky thing to get right. Very seldom is there a DLC that stands up to the main campaign. So rare is a DLC considered worth the money that it becomes noteworthy in the gaming news cycle. Most just feel like something that was pulled from the main game and padded a bit to make a bit more money. The great ones are those that actually have time, effort and care put into their development.

Anyway, enough waxing poetic about DLCs. How good was Naughty Dog’s first-ever single-player DLC? Here’s what the critics think.

Crucifictorious Reunites on Friday Night Lights / Parenthood Crossover

This probably doesn’t fall under the usual list of things that we cover on etg but I thought that this was too neat not to post. I’m a big Friday Night Lights fan so when we get a reunion of Landry Clarke’s (played by FNL/Breaking Bad/Battleship alum Jesse Plemons) band Crucificorious, I’m going to post that video.
