I don’t know if I ever mentioned this but I’m a huge fan of Twin Peaks. I’m also a fan of damn fine coffee. So of course I’m going to run this Twin Peaks pie and coffee supercut. You know, I really should find a copy of Deadly Premonition.
Steam Summer Sale: July 12, 2013
Welcome to Day 2 of the 2013 Steam Summer Sale. I have gotten through the first day completely unscathed. I was very close to buying Skyrim: Legendary Edition but I decided to hold out to see if I can find a better deal.
Anyway, here’s a look at today’s Daily Deal and the latest round of Flash Sales and the Community Pick.
Building (Critical) Consensus: Deus Ex: The Fall
All the rumours swirling about a Deus Ex sequel got everyone excited… right until the moment that we found out that Deus Ex: The Fall wasn’t a big triple-A release or even the rumoured Deus Ex movie. No, Deus Ex: The Fall is the first move of the famed franchise into the mobile gaming space. Until XCOM: Enemy Unknown and KOTOR came out on iOS, I assumed that mobile was a wasteland for core gamers but it turns out that there’s hope.
While Deus Ex doesn’t live up to the standards for an iOS game set by XCOM, it’s not an epic failure like Square’s last major mobile release, Final Fantasy: All the Money Bravest. While the combat might have been a bit lost in translation, the multiple approaches to a level of the proper Deus Ex games are still there. Overall, the critics are well and truly mixed on this one.
Apple Found Guilty of E-book Price Fixing
A U.S. District Judge has ruled that Apple conspired with several book publishers to raise the price of electronic books and try to limit competition in the e-book market in an effort to combat Amazon and the $9.99 price for e-books on its website.
It Begins! The Steam Summer Sale is Go!
As I mentioned yesterday, the annual Steam Summer Sale started today. The first deals went live at 1:00 PM Eastern. There will be the usual collection of 48-hour daily deals, 8-hour flash sales and 8-hour community pick deals. However, good luck buying anything right now. Steam is getting hammered with traffic.
We’ll be keeping tabs on the big sales and dropping PSAs for you to checkout under the Steam Sale link on the top banner.
For now, here are the active daily deals (ending July 13th at 1:00 PM Eastern) and flash sales (ending at 9:00 PM Eastern).
Microsoft Uses Change from Points to Money to Raise UK Prices
The exciting change from the mythical Microsoft Points system (which, according to a friend in marketing, was designed to make people think they were paying less than they actually were) to real world currency might not be all that it’s cracked up to be for gamers in the UK.
Reports from Xbox Live users in the UK say that Microsoft has used the conversion from Microsoft Points to real money as an opportunity to raise prices by upwards of 34%.
The Walking Dead: 400 Days (PC) Review: Long on Stories, Short on Storytelling
Last year’s The Walking Dead by Telltale Games was a real surprise. Not only was it a licensed game that turned out to be spectacular when the TV show based on the comics was struggling but it came from a developer who hadn’t put out a really good game in the previous couple of years. The Walking Dead was the surprise hit of 2012 and walked away with a number of Game of the Year awards.
With the promise of The Walking Dead: Season 2 upcoming, Telltale tided us over with a new series of five short stories from their The Walking Dead universe. Fortunately, all the success hasn’t gone to their head and tiny series of snippets into The Walking Dead play out almost as well as Season 1.
Wouldst Thou Read William Shakespeare’s Star Wars?
Normally when I look at mashups, it’s of two sci-fi properties. Now, you can read modern sci-fi and classic drama mashed up in William Shakespeare’s Star Wars.
This book is the classic Star Wars story reimagined as a Shakespearean play complete with classic lingo and iambic pentameter. And the actors threatened to make George read his dialogue. What would they do if they saw this dialogue?
Florida May Have Accidentally Banned Computers
Back in April, the state of Florida introduced a law that forced the closure of thousands of internet cafes in the state in order to prevent those establishments from being used by people for online gambling. However, the wording of the law might have a more far-reaching effect than intended and might ban any device capable of accessing an online gambling website including computers and smartphones.
PSA: Steam Summer Sale Starts July 11
A very important FYI for PC gamers: Valve has issued two separate confirmations that the annual Steam Summer Sale will begin on July 11th. If you’re reading on the day this post was published, the sale starts tomorrow.
The first confirmation is a notification to a Russian Steam user to top up his Steam wallet for the sale which will run from July 11th to the 22nd. The other is an email from Steam support to a user that reminds him that the sale starts on the 11th.
I hope you’ve been saving for this. Well, not that you need to save a lot with those deals.
