What to Expect In Tonight’s PlayStation Announcement

Tonight is Sony’s big PlayStation event. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, we all expect that tonight will be the official announcement and unveiling of the PlayStation 4. Since Sony announced that there would be an announcement, the PS4 rumour mill has kicked up a notch.

Before tonight’s big event, here’s a look at some of the big news and rumours we expect to officially have confirmed or denied about the PS4. Read the rest of this entry

Building (Critical) Consensus: Crysis 3

In terms of visuals, the Crysis series is the most triple of the triple-A games. Okay, Crysis 2 wasn’t great if you were on a PC but the original Crysis still looks good today and Crysis 3 is an absolutely gorgeous game. However, a game can’t be carried on visuals alone. Is that where Crytek’s efforts fall apart with the third instalment in their Crysis franchise? Read the rest of this entry

Studio Gigante was Working on a Star Wars Fighting Game

Remember Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi? Sorry, did I just accidentally trigger the repressed memory of that abomination of a fighting game that we all wish had never been made because it was equal parts terrible and nonsensical in the whole Star Wars universe?

Well, Studio Gigante put some preliminary work into a second Star Wars fighting game that they were pitching to LucasArts. The game was never made before Studio Gigante folded in 2005. The video below is a tech demo showing a preliminary Xbox build of the game to show off what the plan was and the moves that could be executed. It’s not the fastest or smoothest looking fighting game ever but you’d have to imagine that a dev made up of Mortal Kombat vets would be able to make a damn good fighting game given the time to actually make it.

The Death of the Arcade Sports Game

blades-of-steel-01Growing up, I got an NES when I was about four or five years old. I had that console all the way until I was 11. Naturally, I logged a lot of hours on the dozen or so games that I did have for that system. Perhaps no game got put through its paces like Blades of Steel. I wasn’t the only one who did, though. Hockey fans all know about the classic game that had hitting everywhere, slap shots ricocheting off the boards and more than a few fights.

If you’re a child of the 90s, it might not have been Blades of Steel but there was certainly a classic sports game that was simple yet fun that you poured hours into. Football fans had Tecmo Super Bowl. Basketball fans spent their time on fire playing NBA Jam.

But look at the sports games released now. How many noteworthy sports game releases are what could be described as arcade-y? Not since 2010’s remake/updated NBA Jam released on the Wii have we had a new arcade-style sports game that wasn’t kart racer. It certainly seems as though a genre that has spawned quite a few cult hits is now all but dead.

Wargaming Buys Gas Powered Games

We’ve been closely tracking the saga of Gas Powered Games as it tried to use Kickstarter to keep the company alive. GPG boss Chris Taylor said he had been looking at alternative means to keep the company alive after cancelling their Wildman Kickstarter. Well, it looks like their hopes have been answered as developer Wargaming has purchased GPG.

For Wargaming, the purchase of GPG is part of a recent expansion of studios under their umbrella. Over the last six months, Wargaming has purchased MMO development tool company BigWorld, shooter developer Day 1 Studios (perhaps best known for the FEAR series) and now RPG and RTS developer Gas Powered Games. Antichamber Review: You Just Wrinkled My Brain

antichamber-box-artIt’s been a while since I’ve seen the gaming press soil themselves in excitement over an indie release but that’s exactly what happened in the run up to the release of Antichamber.

The game has been described as Escher-like, in reference to the famous Dutch “impossible reality” painter M.C. Escher. You might know his drawing “Relativity” which shows people climbing stairs with no regards for the laws of physics at all. And that seems to be where Alexander Bruce got his inspiration for Antichamber. Read the rest of this entry

Building (Critical) Consensus: Aliens: Colonial Marines

Yesterday’s release of Aliens: Colonial Marines was anticipated by gamers and Aliens fans alike. How could you not be excited when the beloved sci-fi franchise was getting a game developed by Borderlands developer Gearbox Software. The result was a resounding thud with Game Rankings and Metacritic scores under 50%. Read the rest of this entry

Gas Powered Games Cancels Wildman Kickstarter

Last Friday, we mentioned how it was looking as though the Kickstarter fundraiser for Gas Powered Games’ upcoming action RPG / RTS hybrid Wildman wasn’t going to succeed. On Monday, it seems as though GPG came to the same conclusion as the company cancelled the Kickstarter meaning none of the funds pledged will be paid out.

With four days left on the clock, only $504,000 of the $1.1 million goal had been raised which amounted to about 46% of the target. Even though anecdotal evidence suggests that some campaigns pick up steam in their final days, GPG decided to cut their losses and shut it down early.

Super Hexagon Gets Recreated in LittleBigPlanet 2

I’m not sure what surprises me more about that headline: That there is still a strong community of level builders two years after LBP2’s release, that it was possible to recreate Super Hexagon in the level creation tools or that someone would actually be crazy enough to do this.

Anyway, your favourite nausea inducing, optical nerve frying iOS port has an unofficial new version in LBP2. It might be a little slower and easier on the eyes than the original but it doesn’t look too much easier to play. Not that that’s a bad thing. Super Hexagon still gives me nightmares.

Now on IndieGoGo: The Firefly MMO (Now with Fox’s Blessing)

After initially being announced in June of 2011, the Firefly-based MMO Firefly Universe Online has been given Fox’s blessing and can now go ahead with funding the project. Tuesday morning, DarkCryo launched their fundraising campaign to fund the development an MMO based on the cult classic TV series.

Back in 2006, developer Multiverse announced that they won the rights to develop a Firefly MMO but went bankrupt at the start of last year. Now DarkCryo has stepped up to work on the game and are looking for $135,000 from IndieGoGo by March 20th to make it happen.

While we haven’t really seen the game in action, there’s no doubt that what Dark Cryo is doing looks impressive.
