One Last Look at CES 2013 in Infographic Form

Before we completely wrap up our coverage of this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show, let’s get a quick summary of the more interesting devices that debuted at CES this year and are expected out in the next twelve months. To do so, we have a handy infographic with that breaks things down by category. Read the rest of this entry

Nothing to See Here; Just a Robot Band Playing Ace of Spades

I’ve never head of robot band Compressorhead but having listened to them cover some Motorhead, I’d say they’re better than 90% of the so-called “artists” making music right now. This three man robot band consisting of a guitarist with 78 finger, a bass player and a drummer with four arms laid down a damn good cover of Ace of Spades.

As an added bonus, Compressorhead’s fans are called meatbags. If you don’t get it, play KOTOR.

CES 2013: Thursday Roundup

While CES officially runs through the end of the week, the big unveils and tech demos of the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show have come and gone. With nothing in the way of big breaking news yesterday, I thought that today’s CES Roundup would be a good time to look back at some of the more interesting news that we haven’t covered so far.

nvidia-tegra-4-ces-2013NVIDIA Tegra 4 – It’s the world’s fastest mobile processor. Can I ask what we’ll use it for?
When I mentioned the new NVIDIA Project Shield portable/handheld console on Monday, I kinda overlooked NVIDIA’s big announcement. They officially unveiled their new Tegra 4 processor which they’re promoting as the world’s fastest mobile processor.

It’s a quad-core processor with four Cortex A15 CPU cores, 72 GeForce GPU cores and 4G LTE network compatibility. It also comes with a new internal graphics processing engine which NVIDIA says gives the Tegra 4 ten times faster image processing and rendering. Just for added fun, the Tegra 4 will have 4K Ultra HD video support. So your phone will soon be able to handle higher resolution video than even your TV can handle. I’m not sure whether that’s funny or not. Read the rest of this entry

CES 2013: Wednesday Roundup

The second day of the 2013 edition of CES wasn’t just a technology and gadgetry show but had a little Presidential pizazz thrown in as President Bill Clinton made an appearance at the Samsung keynote to talk about the importance of technology in the developing world. But we start with some of the biggest news for gamers to come out of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

steam-big-pictureSteam Box – Gabe Newell actually calls Valve’s upcoming console the “Steam Box”
As for as gamers are concerned, it looks like The Verge scored the big news scoop of CES. Their interview with Valve CEO Gabe Newell shined a lot of light on to Valve’s plans for hardware going forward. Read the rest of this entry

I don’t know why but Samsung has former President Bill Clinton speaking at their keynote event at CES today at 9:00 AM PST. Click here for Samsung’s live stream of the keynote.

CES 2013: Tuesday Roundup

We’ve had a couple of days of action at CES already but Tuesday marked the official opening day of the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show. In addition to some very interesting product news, we had our first keynote presentation of the show from Panasonic.

sony-ces-2013Sony 4K TVs and Movies – Sony looks for the first mover advantage
Sony’s home entertainment strategy seems to be going all-in on 4K. So far at CES, they’ve announced 4K Ultra HD TVs, a prototype 4K OLED TV, a prototype professional 4K video camera, a prototype 4K Handycam, 4K Blu-Ray discs and 4K streaming movies. Yes, it’s all 4K, all the time from Sony. Well, that would be a good strategy if it all isn’t likely to be prohibitively expensive. The only price Sony has announced is a $25,000 price tag on their 84″ 4K LCD TV.

It’s a sound business plan. If Sony expects that 4K Ultra HD is going to be where the consumer market goes next, being the first mover into the market is generally considered a good move. It would probably be better if they backed it up with 4K output compatibility from the upcoming PS4. I figure that the inclusion of Blu-Ray on the PS3 put that in enough homes to push it over the top in the war with HD-DVD. Maybe the PS4 can get 4K in homes too… When the prices come down. CES 2013: Monday Roundup

I reckon that we can’t start up a geek blog without doing a little bit of CES coverage. Obviously, we’re still a little small to be in Las Vegas for the show but that doesn’t mean we can’t sum up some of the bigger and more interesting news from the 2013 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show.

samsung-oled-tv-ces-2013Samsung OLED TV – Coming soon to store shelves
We’ve been hearing about OLED (organic light-emitting diode) over the years but haven’t seen them outside of trade shows like CES yet. However, Samsung is planning to change that this year. They’re planning to release their F9500 series of OLED TVs this year. This will be an HDTV with 3D capabilities. It will also have a quad-core CPU to power Samsung’s smart hub and gesture controls (finally a practical use for Kinect-like technology).

The most interesting thing from the announcement was the inclusion of multi-view with the TV. This uses Samsung’s 3D glasses with built-in headphones which allow two people to watch two different programs on the same TV. The 55″ Samsung OLED TV will be the biggest application of this sort of technology. Land Rovers have used this sort of technology on dashboard touchscreens since the 2010 model year which allowed both the driver and passenger to see two different things on the same screen. Have Apple’s Sales Peaked? (Infographic)

After blowing away sales expectations for the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S, Apple’s iPhone 5 fell short of expectations. What was once one of the biggest products in the marketplace showed signs of slowing momentum both at the till and with consumers. Is it possible that the iPhone’s popularity has peaked?

Fortunately, there’s an infographic with a few answers about the state of the iPhone. Read the rest of this entry

Fear Not, BlackBerry 10 Will Come on a Phone with a Keyboard

Many friends and acquaintances aren’t shy about giving me a hard time for owning a first-gen BlackBerry Torch.  The reason I got it was because it had both the touchscreen and RIM signature QWERTY keyboard. Good luck finding a decent smartphone with both the touchscreen and keyboard.

All the preview images I’ve seen of RIM’s much-anticipated BlackBerry 10 was on a full-touchscreen device. Earlier this week, however, N4BB leaked some clear images of a more classic looking BB10 device which includes the QWERTY keyboard. Read the rest of this entry
