Comic Book Pull List for April 9, 2014

flash-gordon-1Guess who’s back? It’s Flash Gordon! The classic hero is back with a new series in Flash Gordon #1. It’s funny because I hadn’t heard the name Flash Gordon until I got my driver’s licence renewed. The woman at the counter tells me not to smile for the picture and says, “Look straight ahead, directly at the flash… Gordon.” Well, I barely get through the picture before cracking up. She very nearly cost me the time of taking another picture. See, not all people working those jobs have had their souls sucked out.

Over at Marvel, they celebrate the 50th anniversary of Daredevil by celebrating Matt Murdoch’s 50th birthday in the standalone Daredevil #1.50. And Batman gets a new Scott Snyder penned series that will consist of 60 issues and run weekly for at least the next twelve weeks. Brace your wallets for Batman Eternal #1.

GameSpy Multiplayer Shutting Down in May

gamespy-logoIf you were a gamer in the 2000s, chances are that the most precious login you had wasn’t your Steam ID or your favourite forums but your GameSpy login. Now, with the rise of Steam, Origin, Uplay and all sorts of other server setups for online gaming, new games with GameSpy multiplayer are non-existent.

However, for people who still pick up older games every now and then and play a few pick-up multiplayer games, that may change in less than two months. GameSpy multiplayer servers will be shutting down on May 31st.

game-of-thrones-headerGame of Thrones came back with an epic episode on Sunday night to kick off its fourth season and the second of two seasons based on George R. R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords. After the mind-blowing (for people who didn’t read the books) conclusion to last season, there were a lot of plot threads that needed resolving. That’ll take the whole season and has some new storylines added in for good measure.

phil-spencer-e3-2013How busy was I last week? I completely missed that Microsoft announced that long-time Microsoft Studios boss, Phil Spencer, got a promotion. The company announced that he would be taking on a newly created role as the head of the Xbox and gaming division of Microsoft.

Geek Links of the Week

A bunch of your favourite Polaris YouTubers were in LA last weekend for the most expensive and the most botched game jam in the history of gaming. That’s because the production team took a game jam, tried making a reality TV show and had it all backfire. [Indie Statik]

Last week’s Geek Links featured Asher Vollmer talking about the clones of Threes. This week, the folks at Giant Bomb talk to the people behind those clones. [Giant Bomb]

You don’t have to be a little company or tech blogger to know the US patent system is outdated and broken. Shark Tank shark and billionaire Mark Cuban feels the same way. [Politico]

People are dual-wielding cellphones but not to get the best of iOS and Android. It’s to keep their work and personal lives separate. People would rather carry two phones around than one BlackBerry that claims to do that. Says a lot, RIM. [Wall Street Journal]

Want a look inside how your favourite YouTuber’s are bought and paid for. TotalBiscuit posted an example of an email he typically gets from PR companies looking to buy favourable coverage. [Paste Bin]

Geeky Condom Wrappers

I think that we all need a good laugh to close out the week. It’s certainly felt like a long one up here in Canada and I’m not just saying that because a weird rain/snow mix winter storm is rolling through right now. So I thought I’d share this geek culture set of condom wrappers by Kode Logic.

Remember, kids, practice safe sex and the following images are ever so slightly NSFW.
