Battlefield Hardline Review: SWAT and Robbers
Battlefield Hardline came out only 15 months ago and yet I was able to buy a copy from EA’s own Origin store for only $5 just a few weeks ago. It’s amazing that a spin-off of one of EA’s flagship franchise could be discounted to basically free in just over a year from its release. It’s as if EA admitted that they missed the mark with their take on cops & robbers. The question is if the deserves its apparent lack commercial support is because gamers are burnt out in Battlefield or if Battlefield just doesn’t make for a good law enforcement game.
E3 2016: Best and Worst of E3
Another edition of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, also known as E3, has come and gone. While there was a lot of hype going into E3, I feel as though the buzz during and after E3 was a little muted in comparison to years past. That’s not to say that there were a few surprises and high points from this year’s week of E3 fun and frivolity. So let’s look back at the best and worst of E3 2016.
E3 2016: EA Trailer Roundup
EA was the first company to show off their upcoming games with their E3 press conference. While we knew what was coming ahead of time (a recurring theme of this E3 so far), they did have some pretty interesting trailers showing off their games. And FIFA has a story mode so I guess some lessons from the amazing Fight Night series live on at EA Sports.
E3 2016 Preview: What Franchises to Expect from EA
EA is changing things up with their approach to E3 in 2016. Not only will they not be on the show floor at the LA Convention Center but they’ve dropped their Monday afternoon press conference for a Sunday afternoon presser to make them the first company to make their E3 presentation. There will be a lot of pressure on them to put on a good show to start E3 off right. Fortunately for the twice Worst Company in the World, they have some big franchises with big sequels due for release this year.
Four Companies Won’t Be on the Floor at E3 2016
It used to be the most important week in gaming. Now, it looks as though it isn’t just the gamers and the press that think that the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, has lost some of its luster. Some of the biggest names in the industry don’t see it as the be all and end all of gaming.
Over the last few months, four companies have publicly announced that they won’t have a presence on the floor of E3 this year. In January, EA announced that they wouldn’t be at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Over the last week, Activision, Disney Interactive and Wargaming all announced they wouldn’t be at the LACC either.
Titanfall 2 Out By March 2017, Will Include Single-Player
It’s amazing how much can change in the span of two years. When Titanfall came out in the spring of 2014, it was the first triple-A game to eschew a traditional single-player campaign for a multiplayer-only experience. I suggested that it’s success would cause other games to go that route, though Evolve and Battlefront were the only noteworthy games to take this approach to middling critical reviews.
Two years later, Respawn is starting to divulge details of Titanfall’s sequel and it looks to be dropping for the format it pioneered. The devs say that Titanfall 2 will have a single-player campaign to tell its story.
EA Access Coming to Origin on PC
When EA announced their Access subscription gaming service on the Xbox One, everyone figured that it would be a matter of time before Electronic Arts brought it to PC. After all, they have their Origin game store and client whose one notable advantage over Steam is having EA exclusivity so it lags well behind Valve’s client and store in terms of user base and revenue.
This week, EA announced that their Access subscription service would in fact be coming to PC as Origin Access through their Origin platform.
Jade Raymond Working on an “Assassin’s Creed-Style” Action Game for EA
When one of the most powerful women in gaming made the jump from Ubisoft to EA, you had to wonder what her next big project would be. Thanks to EA’s Chief Financial Officer, we now know what Jade Raymond has been up to since forming the new studio Motive for Electronic Arts. Blake Jorgensen told a conference that Raymond was working on a new open-world action game for the gaming powerhouse.
Star Wars: Battlefront Beta Impressions: Pray I Alter It Further
So we have a new Star Wars trailer and many, many people have tickets to an early showing of The Force Awakens. Exactly a month before the earliest showings of Episode VII, the next chapter in the Star Wars video game franchise will hit shelves.
Both the announcement of J.J. Abrams as director of Episode VII and the appointment of Electronic Arts as the publisher of Star Wars games were met with excitement. While EA did cause a bit of trepidation, the appointment of DICE, BioWare and Visceral, three of EA’s top guns, to develop the games got gamers excited. First up for EA and LucasFilm is DICE with their take on Battlefront. The early results aren’t exactly awe-inspiring.
