Orlando Bloom Covers the Iconic “They’re Taking the Hobbits to Isengard” Song

Many, many years ago, when autotuning, songifying and mashups didn’t really exist to the level they do now, a man made a Lord of the Rings song that prominently featured Legolas yelling “They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard!” Well, about seven years after it first hit YouTube and over 12 million views, Orlando Bloom finally saw it. He and the crew of The Hobbit had a little fun with it on Bloom’s last day on set.

David Lynch Directed a Nine Inch Nails Music Video

Nine Inch Nails have a new album coming out in September so singles and videos for those singles are already dropping to promote the upcoming release. For their first single, Came Back Haunted, NiN has called in the legendary David Lynch to direct the music video.

This being a Lynch video, it’s dark and bizarre. Basically, it’s vintage David Lynch and I love it. The video also comes with a seizure warning for anyone who might not take well to quick flashing colours in the video.

Building (Critical) Consensus: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (iOS)

xcom-enemy-unknown-ios-iconI thought that I wouldn’t have to do a review roundup for the iOS port of 2012 hit XCOM: Enemy Unknown but it turns out that it was pretty spectacular, especially when compared to the standard iOS gaming fare. Maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance that iOS devices can be used for serious gaming rather than just endless runners and Angry Birds.

How Much Money Would You Have in a Sci-Fi Universe?

Here’s a fun little tool that we stumbled upon. Have you ever wondered if you could bank roll the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and use that to rise to power like a Lannister or Tyrell? Maybe you hoped you had enough money to buy yourself a starship to get you to Risa or another vacation spot in the Federation. Well, a new sci-fi currency converter can convert your real world money into the currency of your favourite sci-fi universe.

Samuel L. Jackson Talks About His Purple Lightsaber

Samuel L. Jackson was recently on the Graham Norton Show, presumably to promote the upcoming IndyCar-ish movie Turbo, but, naturally, talk turned to his turn as a Jedi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. This included Sam talking about how Mace Windu’s lightsaber ended up purple and the special inscription on the lightsaber hilt that he has at home.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Ride to Hell: Retribution

ride-to-hell-retribution-box-artDeveloper Eutechnyx doesn’t have the greatest reputation. They’re primarily a racing game developer but you’d never confuse them with Codemasters. Some games they make are pretty good but most end up getting scored in the more mediocre range.

Well, they certainly made a name for themselves with last week’s release of Ride to Hell: Retribution. The game was originally cancelled in 2009 by publisher Deep Silver. Eutechnyx kept working on the game and convinced Deep Silver to officially revive and release the game. In that time, it went from GTA clone in the 1960s to a complete and utter mess. Unfortunately for everyone involved, it looks like Ride to Hell: Retribution has taken the lead in this year’s hotly contested battle for the Worst Game of 2013 award.

Comic Book Pull List for July 3, 2013

what-if-avx-1If you go to your local comic book store tomorrow, expect to see a bunch of new series on the shelves. Smaller publishers like Avatar, Dynamite, Image and Zenscope each have one new series. Marvel has five new series coming out tomorrow. If you’re looking for something new, this is a good week to head to the shop rather than have your file accumulate.

Since there are so many new comics coming out this week, I thought that I’d make each of this week’s picks a new series. DC is building up to the Trinity War by digging into Pandora’s story in Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1. Marvel does a sort of speculative alternate reality miniseries starting with What If: AvX #1 whose title makes me think we might get some more alternate reality stories if this sells well. And this week’s best named new comic is Dark Skullkickers Dark #1 which clearly has twice the darkness of  your standard dark comics.

Defense Grid: The Awakening is the First Xbox Games with Gold Game

xbox-games-with-goldBack at E3, Microsoft promoted their new Games for Gold program during their keynote. This program gives away two free games between the beginning of July and the launch of the Xbox One. Fable III was the first game given away under this promotion and Assassins’ Creed II and Halo 3 were announced as the first two games that would be given away as part of “Games with Gold.”

Well, funny I should mention that. Today was the release of the first Games with Gold game and it wasn’t Assassins’ Creed II or Halo 3. It was actually 2008 tower defence game Defense Grid: The Awakening.

Don Mattrick Leaving Microsoft for Zynga

don-mattrick-pile-of-moneyAfter he took Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment division, AKA Xbox, from the top console brand in America and battered its reputation with a series of bad decisions over the last few months, it looks like Don Mattrick is going to leave brand destruction behind and try his hand at brand rehabilitation instead.

Mattrick is leaving his post as Microsoft’s President of Interactive Entertainment for the CEO job at Zynga Entertainment.

It’s the Final Push for Space Sim MOBA “GoD Factory: Wingmen” on Kickstarter

god-factory-wingmen-headerToday is Canada Day so that means we’re taking a break for the holiday today. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t give out a bit of love to some fellow Canadians.

Back in May, we previewed space combat sim slash MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) GoD Factory: Wingmen by Quebec-based indie developer Nine Dots Studios. We’re finally reaching the end of their Kickstarter funding campaign but they could still use your help to make this cool looking game a reality.
