The Walking Dead: 400 Days (PC) Review: Long on Stories, Short on Storytelling

the-walking-dead-400-days-box-artLast year’s The Walking Dead by Telltale Games was a real surprise. Not only was it a licensed game that turned out to be spectacular when the TV show based on the comics was struggling but it came from a developer who hadn’t put out a really good game in the previous couple of years. The Walking Dead was the surprise hit of 2012 and walked away with a number of Game of the Year awards.

With the promise of The Walking Dead: Season 2 upcoming, Telltale tided us over with a new series of five short stories from their The Walking Dead universe. Fortunately, all the success hasn’t gone to their head and tiny series of snippets into The Walking Dead play out almost as well as Season 1.

PSA: Steam Summer Sale Starts July 11

A very important FYI for PC gamers: Valve has issued two separate confirmations that the annual Steam Summer Sale will begin on July 11th. If you’re reading on the day this post was published, the sale starts tomorrow.

The first confirmation is a notification to a Russian Steam user to top up his Steam wallet for the sale which will run from July 11th to the 22nd. The other is an email from Steam support to a user that reminds him that the sale starts on the 11th.

I hope you’ve been saving for this. Well, not that you need to save a lot with those deals.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Civilization V: Brave New World

civilization-v-brave-new-world-box-artI don’t think I’ve ever rounded up reviews of an expansion pack but few franchises are as iconic as Sid Meier’s Civilization series. Civilization V was roundly considered to be inferior to its predecessor Civilization IV by critics and fans alike. The Brave New World expansion is supposed to close the gap between Civ IV and Civ V. The critics say that Brave New World is mission accomplished.

Get Your First Taste of Grand Theft Auto V in This Gameplay Trailer

We’ve already seen a few trailers for Grand Theft Auto V but haven’t seen how it will play yet. Today, Rockstar changed that with their first gameplay trailer for this fall’s big release.

Not only did we get to see the game in action but we saw a new swapping between characters on the fly mechanic which looks pretty cool. Rockstar also showed off new game mechanics, minigames and teased an online component to the game. I wasn’t particularly excited before but this certainly got my attention.

GameStop’s Supply of PS4s Runs Dry, Halts Pre-Orders

playstation-4-pre-order-bannerIn June, Sony gave GameStop carte blanche to take as many pre-order for PlayStation 4s as they could. Supply wasn’t going to be a concern. An internal memo to GameStop store from management said “the floodgates are open.”

Well, it seems that the floodgates were a bit too open for Sony to keep up with. The standard PlayStation 4 console is no longer available for pre-order on GameStop’s website as they’ve sold out of PS4s.

Fist Puncher Impressions: A Punch to the Face

fist-puncher-box-artNormally I review games but sometimes a game just beats me down so badly that I can’t get any further and just can’t compel myself to fight with the game any longer. So rather than call this look at indie brawler Fist Puncher a review, I’ll just call it impressions.

Fist Puncher is a game that likens itself to old-school 2D side-scrolling brawlers like  River City Ransom. The similarities are clear in terms of the brawling gameplay and integration of RPG elements. However, Fist Puncher can be downright painful to play.

Building (Critical) Consensus: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (iOS)

xcom-enemy-unknown-ios-iconI thought that I wouldn’t have to do a review roundup for the iOS port of 2012 hit XCOM: Enemy Unknown but it turns out that it was pretty spectacular, especially when compared to the standard iOS gaming fare. Maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance that iOS devices can be used for serious gaming rather than just endless runners and Angry Birds.
