Ubisoft is Only Interested in Starting Franchises

ubisoft-headerRemember when I was excited about Ubisoft trying the nearly unheard of thing for games industry of launching new IPs at the 2013 edition of E3. However, that excitement might be a little short-lived.

In a recent interview with A List Daily, Ubisoft’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Tony Key, says that the developer and publisher is only interested in launching new IPs if they think that they can turn them into franchises and release sequels.

Steam Summer Sale: July 16, 2013

steam-summer-sale-2013-july 16-bannerFirst, sorry that I missed yesterday’s breakdown. I’ll have those daily deals for you below.

So we’re on to Day 6 of the annual Steam Summer Sale. We’ve reached the halfway point of the 12 day sale (assuming that the sale ends at 1:00 PM Eastern on July 22nd) and it seems like I’m finally going to start hurting my wallet something fierce today.

F1 2013 Launching with Classic Edition

We all knew that Codemasters was going to release a 2013 edition of their F1 game series this year. That wasn’t going to be a surprise. What was a surprise is the new Classic Edition of the game that will launch this fall that will provide something special for longtime Formula One fans.

The Ultimate Warrior Returns to the WWE in WWE 2K14

The kid in me is marking out right now. The man, the myth, the legend known as The Ultimate Warrior is coming to WWE 2K14 as a pre-order bonus. I’m very much against pre-ordering games but as a fan of wrestling back in golden age of the late 80s and early 90s, I need to get my hands on a wrestling game with Warrior in it!

No mortal can withstand the gods of warriors past unleashing the power of the Warrior and all the little warriors coming on the spaceship from Parts Unknown!

Surgery Simulator is Good for a Laugh

Well, I picked up Surgery Simulator 2013 using the money I made from selling those useless trading cards. It was probably a bad decision but I’m stuck with it now. Even if it’s not the best gaming experience ever, it’s certainly good for a laugh.

Square Shows Off the HD Improvements in Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

You know, I was really excited for Square Enix’s upcoming re-release of Final Fantasy X and X-2. Shockingly, they stand as the only two FF games I’ve played to completion even though they aren’t my favourite FF games. (FFIX FTW!)

This week, SquEnix released a comparison video of the original SD version of FFX for the PS2 and the updated HD Remaster. I have to say, apart from some updated textures, smoothing and colour brightening, there doesn’t seem to be much remastered.

I wasn’t expecting the game to be completely rebuilt in FFXIII’s engine but a little work on those character models wouldn’t have hurt. Just look at the hair and outfits. That was good 12 years ago but I supposed quick cash-ins on classic games is what happens when console manufacturers kill backwards compatibility. Tidus still looks likes he’s pawing at thin air rather than touching Yuna. At least the environments look relatively okay. Maybe it gets better in action.

Anyway, here’s that comparison video.

Steam Summer Sale: July 12, 2013

steam-summer-sale-banner-july-12Welcome to Day 2 of the 2013 Steam Summer Sale. I have gotten through the first day completely unscathed. I was very close to buying Skyrim: Legendary Edition but I decided to hold out to see if I can find a better deal.

Anyway, here’s a look at today’s Daily Deal and the latest round of Flash Sales and the Community Pick.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Deus Ex: The Fall

deus-ex-the-fall-iconAll the rumours swirling about a Deus Ex sequel got everyone excited… right until the moment that we found out that Deus Ex: The Fall wasn’t a big triple-A release or even the rumoured Deus Ex movie. No, Deus Ex: The Fall is the first move of the famed franchise into the mobile gaming space. Until XCOM: Enemy Unknown and KOTOR came out on iOS, I assumed that mobile was a wasteland for core gamers but it turns out that there’s hope.

While Deus Ex doesn’t live up to the standards for an iOS game set by XCOM, it’s not an epic failure like Square’s last major mobile release, Final Fantasy: All the Money Bravest. While the combat might have been a bit lost in translation, the multiple approaches to a level of the proper Deus Ex games are still there. Overall, the critics are well and truly mixed on this one.

Microsoft Uses Change from Points to Money to Raise UK Prices

xbox-live-moneyThe exciting change from the mythical Microsoft Points system (which, according to a friend in marketing, was designed to make people think they were paying less than they actually were) to real world currency might not be all that it’s cracked up to be for gamers in the UK.

Reports from Xbox Live users in the UK say that Microsoft has used the conversion from Microsoft Points to real money as an opportunity to raise prices by upwards of 34%.
