Trials Fusion (PC) Review: Back From the Future

trials-fusion-headerAs I mentioned in the last Trials game review, this is a game that’s been around since Miniclip was one of the top sites in the world for gaming. The series has evolved since the original Trials game. It’s gone from Java to a proper standalone release.

With that change, so did the tone of the series. It went from a slightly over the top recreation of professional trials competition to a cartoony extreme sports arcade game.

Trials Fusion is the first Trials game released on next-gen consoles but despite the game being set in the future and the evolution of consoles and the evolution of the game’s graphics, Red Lynx didn’t really do much to evolve the gameplay.

Is a New 2D Prince of Persia Game in Development

prince-of-persia-2008-headerReports out of France say that the Prince of Persia franchise isn’t dead. In fact, it may just be turning back time to make a comeback. Rumours suggest that Ubisoft’s planned next game in the PoP franchise will see a 2D release in the same engine as the critically acclaimed Rayman Legends.

Ubisoft Gives Press Members Tablets at a Watch Dogs Event. Who Can We Trust Now?

watch-dogs-atm-headerI’ve talked about the bought and paid for reputation of games news reporting before on the blog. However, not everyone in the industry has gotten the growing message that readers and viewers are increasingly concerned about the ethics of games reporting.

The latest example is from a recent press event held by Ubisoft in Paris for Watch Dogs. At the event, the attending invited press members were given free Google Nexus 7 tablets.

Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed 5 Leaked

Ubisoft may not have been planning to let the cat out of the bag on two of their more popular franchises but that hasn’t stopped info from coming out. Late last week, word started leaking fast about the upcoming iterations in the popular Far Cry and flagship Assassin’s Creed franchise. In fact, Ubisoft was caught so off guard that they admitted that they weren’t expecting to have to officially confirm AC5 yet.

Critics Corner: South Park: The Stick of Truth

south-park-the-stick-of-truth-bannerBreak out the Ron Paul GIFs because IT’S HAPPENING! After delays that added up to 15 months, South Park: The Stick of Truth is finally out. The game, written and voiced by South Park creators/writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, has gone through a little turmoil as Obsidian’s development of the game was hampered by THQ’s bankruptcy and the sale of the South Park licence to Ubisoft.

Usually delays mean trouble for a game in development but most of the critics love this game. If you’re a South Park fan, The Stick of Truth is what you’ve been looking for from a South Park game for years. It’s not just another generic licensed piece of garbage. Obsidian is a developer who is used to working with other people’s IP and thriving. Just ask anyone who’s played KOTOR 2 and Fallout: New Vegas. It shouldn’t be a surprise that it lived up to my personal hype as my most anticipated game of 2013 and 2014.

Anyway, enough of the history lesson and hype. Here’s what the critics think of South Park: The Stick of Truth.

Ubisoft Loses Watch Dogs Trademark to “Fraudulent” Abandonment Request

watch_dogs-header
UPDATE: The trademark has been reinstated.

Ubisoft is finding itself in a rather unusual position just a few months away from the anticipated release of their new franchise, Watch Dogs. It seems as though the publisher has abandoned the trademark for the upcoming game but Ubisoft bosses claim that the abandonment of the trademark was not of their doing and that the game is still going to come out.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Fighter Within

fighter-within-box-artBack when I did the Hype Train post about the Xbox One, I said that we had to wait for some games that used the Kinect as a motion controller before we could actually say whether the upgraded camera was worth the hype and extra $100 asking price. Well, little did I know that there was a fighting game that used the Kinect as a controller.

Well, Fighter Within was a third-party exclusive fighter for the Xbox One that was buried in the Xbox One launch line-up. It’s easy to see why it wasn’t promoted. This game just doesn’t work. Whether it’s a matter of the software not being programmed well enough to use the Kinect or whether the Kinect 2.0 isn’t any better as a controller won’t be determined until we get the next Kinect 2.0 game. For now, the consensus is that Fighter Within is awful and so is the Kinect 2.0.

Assassin’s Creed IV Glitch Causes The Rapture

Given the religious undertones of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, it probably wouldn’t surprise you if the game dealt with The Rapture. However, I didn’t expect it to happen accidentally.

A glitch in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag not only causes the parting of the sea but your ship’s crew to ascend into heaven. Mind you, I’m not sure if that’s a bug or a feature of this game.

Ubisoft Calls Beyond Good & Evil a Mistake

beyond-good-and-evil-headerI’ve often lamented the lack of new IPs and new ideas coming out of the games industry’s big studios and news like this doesn’t help matters. In an interview with Games Industry, creative director of the upcoming Child of Light, Patrick Plourde, said that when he was pitching the game to Ubisoft, they told him that making Beyond Good & Evil was a mistake.
