Star Wars Sure is Different without John Williams

There are a lot of things that you can say about George Lucas. He’s a great visual story-teller. He’s fantastic at pushing the bounds of visuals in movies. That doesn’t mean that he’s perfect. He can’t write dialogue to save his life. He’s not an exceptionally good director. And his overall writing is spotty at best. With someone to help interpret the vision (helping him write or direct) or some other limitation to force him to push the bounds of his creativity, his work absolutely shines. Just look at the Indiana Jones trilogy and the original Star Wars trilogy. Given carte blanche, it turns into the prequel trilogy.

His number one ally in making movies has always been John Williams. The greatest thing that Steven Spielberg ever contributed to film was making John Williams a superstar. But what happens when you take John Williams’ amazing soundtrack away from Lucas? It’s not pretty.

Which is More Popular: Star Trek or Star Wars?

It’s the age-old debate among geeks, nerds and other sci-fi enthusiasts. Sometimes it’s phrased as “which is better?” Sometimes it’s a debate over whether a Starfleet armada could topple the Imperial Fleet. I’ve even heard Captain Kirk vs. Han Solo. Either way, the timeless confrontation is Star Trek or Star Wars.

Our friends over at Movoto took to social media to find out whether Americans were Trekkies or Star Wars fans. Do Star Wars fans have a cute name like “trekkies?”

Star Wars: Attack Squadron Cancelled by Disney

star-wars-attack-squadrons-beta-closure-noticeJust when you thought that the purchase of LucasFilm and LucasArts by Disney would lead to the return of space sims to the Star Wars game library, Disney pulled the rug out from under you. Star Wars: Attack Squadron was cancelled while in the midst of its closed beta.

What if Star Wars Was a Tarantino Movie?

Who doesn’t like a good recut trailer? Here’s one that I liked that shows Star Wars (Episode IV – A New Hope for people who weren’t around for when it was only called Star Wars) cut as a Quentin Tarantino movie. A bunch of the classic Tarantino hallmarks are in there like the vintage music, a lot of violence and some sharp Han Solo dialogue. You’d almost want to watch this movie if you didn’t realize that you’ve already watched it countless times.

Disney Currently Developing Three Star Wars Spin-Offs

star-wars-logo-bannerWe knew that Disney was planning on making some “spin-off” movies to cash in on the $4 billion price tag they paid for LucasFilm. We just didn’t know what movies they would make and how many they would make.

After a stockholders call with Disney CEO Bob Iger, it looks like the answer is many and as quickly as possible. Iger revealed Disney currently has three Star Wars movies in development beyond the next trilogy and want them on-screen starting in 2016.

The Force is Not with Steam’s Star Wars Weekend Sale

steam-star-wars-saleTo mark Star Wars Day (May the 4th, if you still need to ask), Valve had a special Star Wars sale on Steam in which all the Star Wars games in its collection were on sale. Even I rounded out my collection with some games that I have floating around on CD somewhere but would need a fair bit of work to get running again on modern hardware and software.

I ended up getting lucky with my purchases. While the Force can allow you to sense the future, Valve underestimated the popularity of the promotion and ended up short on keys for it.

How Much Would Jabba’s Palace Cost? (Infographic)

With the cast of the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII revealed, I think that it’s only appropriate to run a Star Wars edition of Movoto’s fantasy real estate valuation.

While I don’t think that the next Star Wars trilogy will make a return to Jabba’s Palace, I’d bet the Lars Family Moisture Farm that there will be a return to Tatooine. And there’s no better piece of real estate on the iconic desert planet than Jabba’s Palace. Once you get the Hutt and Rancor smells out of the place, it will set you back over 72 million Galactic Credits.

LucasArts Cancelled a Darth Maul Game in 2011 After Eight Months in Development

darth-maul-headerOne of the many characters that got a bit overlooked in the films and rose to life as a fan favourite game and with some new adventures in the Expanded Universe was Darth Maul. He was so popular that he was retconned out of death and into the Clone Wars animated series by the end of its run.

However, that wasn’t always the plan. A report in Game Informer says that LucasArts originally planned to make a game starring Darth Maul before it was cancelled by LucasArts while it was in the middle of development.
