Geek Links of the Week

The UK’s new internet porn filter isn’t just stopping people from accessing porn. It’s blocking access to websites about sexual education, sexual health and porn addiction. This is why you shouldn’t be censoring the internet. You only screw it up. [BBC News]

My list of my favourite games of 2013 is coming up soon. To warm you up for that list, here’s The New Yorker’s list of the best games of 2013. [The New Yorker]

Steam Holiday Sale: December 20, 2013

steam-holiday-sale-2013-bannerHave we all made it to the second day of the Steam Holiday Sale without going bankrupt? I did though I was close to clearing out my wishlist yesterday. I’ll probably be even closer today with some of the flash sales and community picks over the next 24 hours. I’ve pretty much gotten all of the daily deals I like in the last sale. Mind you, Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior might get a buy.

Two quick reminders before we go on. First, the daily deals are for 48 hours so you have until 1:00 PM EST tomorrow to get The Stanley Parable for 40% off. (That’s a note-to-self. All of yesterday’s daily deals are still active today.) And second, the prices tend to change as Valve discovers errors. The BioShock Infinite season pass and DLC was 75% for a few minutes yesterday before that was corrected. I just missed it but that would have been a great deal considering there’s one piece still to be released.

7 Best Games of the 7th Generation: Grand Theft Auto V

grand-theft-auto-v-headerI don’t think that I could do a list of the seven best games of the seventh console generation without including one game from this year. While a lot of our attention this year has been on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, 2013 has been a spectacular year for games. Any one of a few games are more than worthy of inclusion on this list.

From the class of 2013, the best swansong for the now last generation of consoles has to be Grand Theft Auto V.

Are You Ready for Dogecoin?

dogecoin-header

With Bitcoin suffering a roughly 50% value drop thanks to a report out of China that the country’s special bank wasn’t allowing money to be deposited into the virtual currency in Chinese Yuan, people are going to start looking to other cryptocurrency alternatives.

While you may have heard of Litecoin, the latest virtual currency du jour is based on a meme. Get ready for Dogecoin.

Hold On To Your Wallets! The Steam Holiday Sale is Underway!

steam-holiday-sale-2013-headerHas your wallet sufficiently recovered from the last Steam sale that only ended three weeks ago? Well, too bad. It’s time for the annual Steam Holiday Sale. If you missed any of the deals from the Autumn Sale, they’ll be back again here. The only difference between the Autumn and Holiday Sale deals is that there’s more time during this sale for flash sales, daily deals and community picks. Otherwise, the discounts will be the same.

As always, I’ll remind you at the start of the sale that you shouldn’t buy anything until the end of the sale unless it’s a daily deal, flash sale or a community pick. If something you want isn’t popping up on there, wait until the end of the sale to buy it.

EA Facing Two Investor Lawsuits Over Battlefield 4

battlefield-4-headerI know that Battlefield 4 launched with more than its fair share of bugs and might earn EA yet another Worst Company in America award but I didn’t think that it would be this poorly received.

Two law firms are currently investigating whether a class-action lawsuit can be launched on the behalf of EA investors as a result of statements made by EA officers about the game, their knowledge of the state of the game and the impact that had on the company’s share price.

Twitter Working on Tweet Editing Feature

twitter-bannerIf there is one feature that Twitter doesn’t currently have that we all wish would be added, it’s the edit button. A quick fix beats the heck out of deleting and tweeting again with the correct spelling, username, etc.

Matthew Keys of The Desk says that three Twitter employees say that the social network is currently developing an edit function and is working on fine-tuning the feature’s functionality.

Shufflepuck Cantina Deluxe Review: Back to the Future

shufflepuck-cantina-deluxe-headerThe first video game that I remember playing was Shufflepuck Cafe on my dad’s old Macintosh SE. Sure, there were other games on there but nothing quite captured my attention like Shufflepuck. It might have been in black and white but the graphics looked fine, it had sound (which was a rarity on that computer) and it was just fun to play. I may have poured more hour into that game during my childhood than anything on my NES.

So when I saw this homage to the original Shufflepuck Cafe pop up on Steam, I had to pick it up, if only for nostalgia’s sake. Fortunately, Shufflepuck Cantina didn’t stop at recreating the original in colour but added some depth to the original.

Sony Denmark Teases New Crash Bandicoot Games

crash-bandicoot-returns-fan-bannerI’ve been banging on for months now that I’ve been wanting a new Crash Bandicoot developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 4. Recent rumours have suggested that Sony Computer Entertainment has quietly reacquired the Crash IP from Activision and a recent Facebook post by Sony PlayStation Denmark has all but confirmed the return of the iconic marsupial to the PlayStation family.

Comic Book Pull List for December 18, 2013

harley-quinn-1Have you done your Christmas shopping yet? You have about week left to do it. I think I’m done but it’s all down to shipping that’s already a week behind schedule. Why do I mention Christmas shopping? Because I think this is our last pull list before Christmas. Unless, I’m wrong. This is my first year writing a geek blog.

Anyway, this is our pull list post so here are our recommendations for the week. Harley Quinn’s new series gets properly underway in Harley Quinn #1. I haven’t been keeping up with recent issues of Superior Spider-Man but the Superior Venom has arrived in Superior Spider-Man #24. And Zoey is back on the air in A Voice in the Dark #2.
