The Walking Dead: Season Two – Episode Five (Spoiler-Free) Review: My Only Friend, The End

the-walking-dead-season-two-episode-five-headerComing into the second season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead, one of the big things people were talking about is how the game would be able to continue with Clementine as the protagonist. After all, she’s just a little girl. She couldn’t fill the shoes of Lee.

Well, literally, Clem couldn’t fill his shoes. Figuratively, once we got all the character introductions out of the way and got into character and plot development, this season took The Walking Dead to heights surpassing Season One. Sure, the episodes are shorter and maybe the illusion of choice isn’t quite as strong as the first season but amazing story and character writing made this game one of the highlights of 2014.

Now we reach the end of Season Two and boy, does Telltale give this season a spectacular send off.

EA Sports UFC Still Has Some Amazing Glitches

I can’t imagine that it’s easy to make a video game and especially one that has to recreate such a varied and technical sport as mixed martial arts. But when you’re the biggest sports game developer in the world that is simultaneously the most hated dev/publisher and you’ve acquired the license to the biggest MMA organization in the world, expectations are high. So when your UFC game is full of hilarious glitches, it’s going to be fodder for hilarious videos.

So as a follow-up to the original video, here are more awesome EA Sports UFC glitches as called by “Mike Goldberg” and “Joe Rogan.”

dive-in-square-enix-logoMove over, Sony. You’re not the only ones who want a piece of the cloud gaming market. Square Enix is getting into cloud gaming but is cutting out the pesky console middle man. This fall, Square Enix will be launching a service in Japan that will let you stream games to your Android or iOS device called Dive In.

Apple Unveils Two iPhone 6s and the Apple Watch

apple-iphone-6-apple-watch-headerIn news that should shock absolutely no one (except all the mainstream media who thought this was the most revolutionary announcement ever), Apple announced exactly what was rumoured. The new iPhone 6 was unveiled with two screen sizes that are both bigger than the current iPhone 5-series offerings and a new smart watch. That and a bunch of other new little gadgetry additions were noted for those devices that weren’t really reported on ahead of time.

Comic Book Pull List for September 10, 2014

justice-league-united-futures-end-1Since I took last week off and didn’t do a pull list, let’s get one item out of the way up front. This month is The Death of Wolverine month. Issue #1 was last week. This week is The Death of Wolverine #2. Next week, Marvel prints more money. Love the idea of killing off characters to bring them back later and cash in some more or hate it, it’s a time-honoured tradition of the comic book industry. It also helps a company quickly amass a war chest of funds which gives them a little more flexibility to take risks on new or smaller series… Well, hypothetically, anyway. It could all be down to greed.

Meanwhile… Dark Horse has an Alien(s) comic from that recent prequel that everyone loved with Prometheus: Fire and Stone. Because I’m a mark for vintage radio dramas, I feel compelled to mention Dynamite’s Shadow miniseries comes to an end in The Shadow: Year One #10. And DC is going through a New 52 anniversary event right now with 41 “Future’s End” branded comics for some of their characters and series. This week’s Future’s End offerings include Batman, Justice League United, the Green Lantern Corps, Batgirl, Constantine and many more.

“GamerGate”: Gamers Aren’t Bad People; Misogynists, Harassers and Troglodytes Are

gaming-is-not-a-crime-headerA couple of weeks back, I stopped posting on here unannounced. That was in the midst of the Zoe Quinn controversy, since redubbed by unimaginative people as “GamerGate,” and there was no other news being reported by the gaming media. Normally, I would find something from the tech world or some videos to fill in the Friday (August 29th, if you’re keeping score at home) but I was absolutely defeated.

Not only had the Zoe Quinn story not died after the couple of weeks it had been alive but the discourse had gotten worse. It wasn’t just all the slut shaming, harassment, threats and other general misogyny that was directed at Zoe and anyone who spoke in support of her or against slut shaming, misogyny and the like. The gaming media, having spent the entire Zoe Quinn scandal not talking about the accusations of members of the gaming media compromising their professional ethics and integrity in dealings with Quinn, came out swinging and condemned gamers for being terrible people. They declared gamers dead.

They wildly missed the mark. Gaming isn’t dead. Gamers aren’t dead nor are they the worst people in the world. It’s the people who are spewing hate that are the real terrible people but they don’t represent all gamers.

Is Warner Bros. Working on a Steam Competitor?

wb-play-bannerJust when you thought that we were up to the saturation level for online gaming clients and distributors, another publisher wants in on the action. While it was logical for heavyweights like EA and Ubisoft to launch their own stores to make a few extra dollars off of their and other publishers’ games, it may surprise you that Warner Bros. has recently filed a number of trademark filings that they’re looking to launch a Steam/Origin/Uplay competitor.

A Quick Note About Comments

I’d like to just talk for a minute about commenting here on et geekera. We don’t get a lot of them here but we get a few. The problem is the setup that I go with on the WordPress platform. You basically have three options: 1) Comments off; 2) Comments come through as submitted; and 3) Comments set to pending until I approve them or straight through with a previously approved comment.

My experiences on The Lowdown Blog tell me that letting every comment through is just a way for spam bots to ruin your comments section and I like the discussion so I went with pending my approval. The Akismet spam filtering service on WordPress isn’t perfect. On TLB, a lot of spam comments come through. Over here, I’ve found a few comments that were legit go to spam rather than pending and other comments that were clearly spam go through to pending approval. Even after approval, there are a few of you that are still flagged as spam. Seeing as I’ve got over 1,500 spam comments saved up in my spam comment folder from the last two weeks, I’m not going to be able to through all them to see if they’re actually spam or not.

So if you’re not seeing your comments straight away: 1) I may have to get to approving it; or 2) It’s been flagged as spam. Since I can’t be checking comments for approval all the time, it may take minutes or hours for it to go up. If you need to get my attention about approving or un-spamming a comment, you can email us at etgeekera [at] gmail.com or tweet us @etgeekera.

Just keep in mind that if you’re not adding anything to the conversation, you’re not getting approved, even if you ask politely. To the guy who tried to comment this morning on a Doctor Who review with a link to his blog and Facebook page: That’s spam and you’re not getting approved. To rebloggers: Add something to your reblog besides “Reblogged by BlogX” and you generally get approved. To everyone who writes “cool article” or “nice” while making sure that there’s a link back to your blog: Write more than two words. Say something that someone might think about replying to or liking your comment. That’s when you’ll get approved.

I’m not trying to be exclusionary or pretend this microscopic part of the geek blogosphere is the most important place online. I want to make sure that 1) You know what’s happening with comments on the blog; and 2) We foster some healthy discussion and dialogue on the blog. That doesn’t mean I’m going to censor critical comments. It’s just that after seeing all the crap with the so-called #GamerGate (column coming this week), I just want to make sure this is still a nice place for people to read and talk.

Doctor Who: Robot of Sherwood Review

doctor-who-robot-of-sherwood-headerWhat happens when legends meet? I don’t mean two famous people but more what happens when two mythical creatures meet. Sure, we’ve had enough cross-over movies, TV shows and comics that cross-overs have warn out their welcome but there’s still the special moment every now and then.

But what happens when two mythical creatures who aren’t all that mythical get in a battle of egos? That’s the question that is being asked and answered by this weekend’s episode of Doctor Who. The Doctor, a myth throughout space and time, comes face to face with Robin Hood, a myth of Earth. They’re very real and very spectacular.

Doctor Who: Into the Dalek Review

doctor-who-into-the-dalek-headerSince Steven Moffat has taken over as executive producer of Doctor Who, the Daleks have been used sparingly. There have only really been two Dalek episodes, 2010’s Victory of the Daleks and 2012’s Asylum of the Daleks (which was more a Clara episode than a Dalek episode). This is in stark contrast to the Russell T. Davies era (which I have more than this issue with) which had eight Dalek episodes in four seasons and generally made them look like chumps in all but one of those stories.

For the second episode of the Capaldi era, we’ve already got ourselves a Dalek episode. There’s no better way to throw a Doctor head first into the chaos of the universe than pitting him against his arch-nemesis.
