Haven: See No Evil Review

haven-title-card-bannerWhen we last left Haven’s version of the Scooby Gang, everybody was in rough shape. Dave shot himself thanks to Dwight’s trouble. Duke was bleeding from the eyes after all the Crocker family absorbed troubles came back on him and started tearing him apart from the inside. Jennifer keeled over dead because of evil supernatural door reasons. Oh, and Audrey’s body is now hosting her original incarnation, Mara. Just another day in the life of Haven.

So with all those plot threads left dangling at the end, there’s a lot that needs to be taken care of in the fifth season premiere.

Game Trailers Roundup for September 15, 2014

It’s been far, far too long since I’ve done a roundup of recently released game trailers. When they come out, I add them to my watch later list on YouTube and that list has gotten embarrassingly long. Between triple-As, double-As and indie titles, there are scads of trailers that we need to catch you up on.

This week, we’ve got some upcoming releases including Forza Horizon 2 and Crimes and Punishments to help you put together an end of the month shopping list. If Pokemon is more your speed, we have a couple of trailers for that too. Maybe you’re a horror fan? There are trailers for Alien: Isolation and Resident Evil: Revelations 2. And that’s just some of the trailers we have for you.

YouTuber Recreates Guardians of the Galaxy Opening in Destiny

It took me until Labour Day weekend but I finally saw Guardians of the Galaxy. There really isn’t a whole lot else to do when you’re a tourist in Sudbury once you get Science North out of the way. I don’t really do movie reviews but I think I can sum it up as being absolutely awesome.

One thing that I really loved was the soundtrack of oldies hits. I wasn’t expecting it when Redbone’s Come And Get Your Love came on at the start of the movie but it made for a great opener. And one thing that everyone seems to like about Bungie’s Destiny is the ability to bust a move on a whim. Naturally, that leads to the epic mashup of epic mashups as Guardians of the Galaxy meets Destiny in this video by Somewhat Awesome Games.

Doctor Who: Listen Review

doctor-who-listen-headerSteven Moffat has two tricks that he really likes to use when writing episodes. The first is creating and/or solving problems through wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey time paradoxes. I’ve lost count of the number of times that we’ve seen that. The second is trying to scare little children of everyday things. We’ve done statues, shadows and this week, we’re supposed to be scared of being alone in the dark.

Moffat decided to hybrid timey-wimey with everyday horror in Listen. In many ways, it’s a spiritual successor to Blink, the first time we met the Weeping Angels. Maybe it was a bit too familiar, though.

Geek Links of the Week

If you thought the North American games press was too far in bed with the publishers, it’s worse in Australia. In addition to massive perks from publishers, some prominent journalists are literally in bed with publisher PR. [/r/Games]

Grand Theft Auto V is coming to PS4/XB1 on November 18th and the PC version is coming out on January 27, 2015 (Yay! PC gaming master race FTW!). Before then, Rockstar gave GameStop managers a little preview of the next-gen version of the game. [NeoGAF]

The man who started the now-banned /r/TheFappening subreddit wants his privacy back. There’s just a slight irony to that. [The Verge]

And for something different: Before he was The Doctor, Peter Capaldi was a superstar as Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It. Here’s a collection of some of the best Tucker quotes as motivational posters but be warned that Malcolm Tucker’s language isn’t anywhere near as family friendly as The Doctor. [BuzzFeed]

For something else on the light side, here’s a look at the evolution of console graphics over the last 37 years from the Atari 2600 to the latest generation of console. Bonus points for calling out Gran Turismo 2 as the best looking PS1 game. That was my favourite GT game and it has the best intro video of any game in history. [Ars Technica]

Star Wars Sure is Different without John Williams

There are a lot of things that you can say about George Lucas. He’s a great visual story-teller. He’s fantastic at pushing the bounds of visuals in movies. That doesn’t mean that he’s perfect. He can’t write dialogue to save his life. He’s not an exceptionally good director. And his overall writing is spotty at best. With someone to help interpret the vision (helping him write or direct) or some other limitation to force him to push the bounds of his creativity, his work absolutely shines. Just look at the Indiana Jones trilogy and the original Star Wars trilogy. Given carte blanche, it turns into the prequel trilogy.

His number one ally in making movies has always been John Williams. The greatest thing that Steven Spielberg ever contributed to film was making John Williams a superstar. But what happens when you take John Williams’ amazing soundtrack away from Lucas? It’s not pretty.

Which is More Popular: Star Trek or Star Wars?

It’s the age-old debate among geeks, nerds and other sci-fi enthusiasts. Sometimes it’s phrased as “which is better?” Sometimes it’s a debate over whether a Starfleet armada could topple the Imperial Fleet. I’ve even heard Captain Kirk vs. Han Solo. Either way, the timeless confrontation is Star Trek or Star Wars.

Our friends over at Movoto took to social media to find out whether Americans were Trekkies or Star Wars fans. Do Star Wars fans have a cute name like “trekkies?”

Critics Corner: NHL 15

nhl-15-headerIn America, the big EA Sports title is Madden 15. Every football fan that’s also a gamer buys Madden every year. We have a similar thing here in Canada. Since most of our sports fans are hockey fans, it’s EA’s NHL series that gets the buys. If you’re buying this year’s NHL 15 on the PS3 or 360, you played it last year. It’s just NHL 14 with a roster update as EA Sports is wont to do with its legacy-gen titles that aren’t big in America (see also: FIFA). Their focus is on developing the current/next-gen title. Well, that’s what they want you to think.

While NHL 15 is a huge step up in presentation with far better graphics and TV style presentation that looks ripped from NBC, a bunch of the features that gamers enjoyed on the PS3 and 360 aren’t here this year. Like the Madden games at the start of the last generation, fan-favourite features were left out of the next-gen launch title and will be reintroduced later so they can be heavily touted by the marketing people. The actual on-ice gameplay is supposed to still be great. Whether you’re going to want NHL 15 depends on whether you really care about all the off-ice features that are missing or trimmed this year.

Well, there’s always next year. Right, Leafs fans?

eSports Weekend Calendar: September 12 – 14, 2014

It’s all quiet on the League of Legends front this week as we’re in between league play and the Worlds which starts next week. However, there is a world-class tournament in StarCraft II this weekend. KeSPA is holding an individual tournament that features some of the best players in the world, including a who’s who of Proleague and WCS stars, in the KeSPA cup. There is also the slightly controversial (because of its location) DreamHack Moscow tournament. That one isn’t quite as loaded with the premierist of the premiere talent but DreamHack’s are always good for a big surprise or two.

Elsewhere, there’s action from Hearthstone and Dota 2 for you to watch this weekend. Basically, if you’re looking for League, you’re out of luck this weekend. Otherwise, you’re in great shape.

Microsoft Trying to Buy Minecraft Dev Mojang

minecraft-xbox-one-edition-headerThe biggest little indie studio in gaming might soon become part of the current evil empire of gaming. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is strongly pursuing Minecraft developer Mojang and has a deal worth more than $2 billion on the table for the company.
