E3 2014: EA Press Conference Trailer Roundup

As I’ve been doing this whole way along, it’s time to follow-up the press conference post with some of the videos shown at the press conference. And just like how EA front-loaded their media briefing with all the cool news and videos, all the cool trailers start this post off. So it’s DICE and BioWare upfront with all the bog standard EA crap following. Maybe they’ll pull a Microsoft and learn their lesson for 2015… Nah.

E3 2014: You Can’t Teach an EA Dog New Tricks

ea-e3-2014-headerIn between Monday’s press conferences for Microsoft and Sony, the usual publishers got their work in. Electronic Arts, twice named the Worst Company in America, was the first to show off their new wares at E3. Actually, no, they didn’t show off much new. In fact, apart from some new trailers, I don’t think the word new should be used anywhere near this media briefing.

E3 2014: Nintendo Press Conference Trailer Roundup

Now that you’ve caught up on reading about the latest offerings from the crew at Nintendo, how about we all watch the latest offerings from Nintendo. While we might have been complaining about a lack of system sellers on the Wii U thus far, it looks like the next 18 months of the Wii U’s life might just be worth picking up the console, especially when it comes down to the $300 price range from the $350 in Canada.

E3 2014: Nintendo May Have Won E3 Without Even Showing Up

nintendo-e3-2014-headerFor the second straight year, Nintendo forewent the big press event and instead kicked off the first official day of E3 with a special Nintendo Direct video conference. While it might scream of a company bleeding cash, it may not have been a bad idea this year. With neither Sony nor Microsoft setting the world on fire with their media briefings, the door was open for the white brand to make a big impression.

Not only did they have a big opportunity, they took it and got people excited about Nintendo for the first time in a few years.

Comic Book Pull List for June 11, 2014

eve-true-storiesLet’s take a break from our E3 coverage to talk about more video games! Well, kind of about more video games. Since this week is E3, I thought that it was only appropriate to feature game-based comic books in this week’s pull list. Younger gamers will appreciate IDW’s new series that starts with Angry Birds Comics #1. Older fans can jump into an ongoing series in Sonic the Hedgehog #261. And MMO fans can check out a hardcover collection of stories about the fall of the Band of Brothers alliance in EVE: True Stories.

I also have a few new comics for regular pull list readers. The gang at Marvel have a spin-off of Original Sin with Original Sins #1. No points for the title. Justice League United #2 gets featured here just because it has a Justice League Canada variant cover which will always earn points with me. And the Rocky and Bullwinkle miniseries ends in Rocky and Bullwinkle #4.

E3 2014: PlayStation Press Conference Trailer Roundup

Now that we’ve told you about the PlayStation press conference that closed out Monday’s festivities at E3, it’s time to show you some of what Sony had on offer at their big E3 show.

For the most part, I’ve stuck to the big titles that were exhibited by Sony Computer Entertainment but I couldn’t resist giving you a look at No Man’s Sky and Entwined because they both looked fantastic. Of course, so did LPB3 and Uncharted 4 but that was for very different reasons.

E3 2014: PlayStation Wants to be Your Shooter and Multiplayer Console

playstation-4-e3-2014-headerSome seven hours after the Xbox media briefing ended, it was Sony’s turn to try to impress gamers with their keynote to close out Monday’s E3 action. Unlike the green brand, the PlayStation crew used their 90-minute presser to mix their game previews with some new hardware and entertainment offerings. As a result, the middle of the presser dragged a little bit relative to the Xbox one but did the rest of what was shown impress more than what Microsoft had to offer.

E3 2014: Xbox Press Conference Trailer Roundup

Even I, with my limited knowledge of growing a community and increasing page views, know that you don’t tuck trailers from E3 into another post when you can make a separate post for extra page views. Granted, I’m not doing the standard one trailer per post to flood your various social media feeds and RSS readers with our posts.

Anyway, having just wrapped up our recap of the Xbox One press conference, it’s time to actually watch some of what Microsoft and friends had on offer at their big E3 keynote. We have the announcement trailer for Halo’s Master Chief Collection. Sunset Overdrive headlines the gameplay videos along with The Witcher III and Assassin’s Creed: Unity. As an added bonus, I’ve thrown in the Tomb Raider sequel teaser trailer.

E3 2014: The Xbox One is Now a Games Console

xbox-one-logo-bannerWhen the Xbox One was unveiled last year and presented again at E3 last June, the focus wasn’t really on the games. Microsoft was more interested in pitching the Xbox One as an all-in-one entertainment unit for the living room by touting the entertainment apps and Kinect integration. Between not worrying about the games, the lingering DRM controversy and a price point $100 higher than the PlayStation 4, Microsoft has been in catch up mode for the last twelve months.

It’s amazing what a difference a year makes. With new Xbox division boss Phil Spencer at the helm, this year’s Microsoft E3 press conference was all about the games. The Kinect was hardly mentioned. Entertainment apps may as well not have existed.

Riot Shows Off Updated League of Legends Summoner’s Rift

league-of-legends-wallpaperJust because you’re the top MOBA in the world and the most watched game on Twitch, that doesn’t mean that you should rest on your laurels. Last week, Riot Games took the covers off an upcoming update to their game’s main map, Summoner’s Rift.
