Primal Fears Review: Running Scared

primal-fears-box-artI’m a huge fan of twin-stick shooters going back to the original twin-stick game for the home console, Ape Escape. When the PSN went down two years ago, one of my free game downloads was Dead Nation. I absolutely loved that game. It was an isometric camera version of Left 4 Dead. It wasn’t a zombie simulation as much as it was an arcade shoot-em-up.

When I picked up DNS Development’s Primal Fears, I was hoping for largely the same thing except with keyboard and mouse. The trailer showed that it was fairly arcade-inspired with enemies dying in massive explosions and/or bursting apart under a hail of gunfire. A trailer wouldn’t lie to us right? THQ is No More After Auction. Long Live THQ!

thq-bankruptcy-logoThe bankruptcy forced sale of games publisher THQ ended with the company’s assets being divided up at auction. The sum of THQ’s parts turned out to be greater than its whole as the auction sale raised a reported total of close to $100 million in revenue. This beat the high bid for THQ as a whole of $70 million from Clearlake Capital Group which meant that the publisher was sold for parts. Read the rest of this entry

All of Stan Lee’s Marvel Movie Cameos

If there’s one thing that I look forward to in every Marvel Comics movie, it’s the Stan Lee cameo. I know that’s a weird thing to look forward too but it’s usually a laugh-worthy moment. Thanks to this video, you don’t have to sit through a whole movie for a couple of seconds of Stan. You can get them in one handy dose.

BBC May Have Big Plans for Doctor Who’s 50th

doctor-who-the-eleven-doctorsA report in the Birmingham Mail (via Airlock Alpha) says that Christopher Eccleston will once again don his leather jacket and man the helm of the TARDIS as he returns for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special.

Not only did the Mail say that Ecclestone was returning as the Ninth Doctor but would be joined by all actors who played one of Matt Smith/The Doctor’s previous incarnations. This includes deceased actors William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee who played the first three Doctors. Read the rest of this entry

Rumours say Sony is Dropping the DualShock Controller for the PS4

broken-ps3-controllerIt appears the folks in charge of designing Sony’s PlayStation 4 live by Red Green’s philosophy of if it ain’t broke, you’re not trying. A recent report on CVG says that Sony will radically change their traditional DualShock analog controller for one that will include a touchscreen on the front and biometric sensors built into the grips. Five Questions for Season Four of Haven

haven-wallpaperThe third season of Syfy’s original series Haven wrapped up last Friday with a back-to-back set of episodes. The problem with the finale is that the cliffhanger left me with more questions than answers. I guess that’s the trouble with TV season finales. Writers feel obligated to leave you a cliffhanger to make you feel obliged to come back so as to get the conclusion of the story even though fans of the show will come back regardless.

Since we were left with more questions than answers, here are some questions that will need answering when the fourth season of Haven starts this fall. Read the rest of this entry

Geek Links of the Week

We’re back with another week’s collection of cool geek links. No one wanted this killed with fire so it’s going to keep coming back, even if no one reads this. Now, on with the show.

Senior writer Greg Sandoval resigned from CNET over a lack of editorial independence from parent company CBS. It turns out that CBS vetoed CNET’s choice for the site’s Best in Show award for CES because CBS is suing the company that made the product. [The Verge]

There are some very interesting legal proceedings over at AMD. They’ve filed suit against four former employees who allegedly stole confidential documents before departing for NVIDIA. [ExtremeTech]

The NRA hates video games and think they’re to blame for mass shootings and gun violence. The problem is that guns in games are really there for the same reasons that the NRA champions. [Insert Coin]

Spec Ops: The Line Review: Do You Know the Enemy?

spec-ops-the-line-coverDespite having yet to play it, I named Spec Ops: The Line as one of my 12 favourite games of 2012. The game created a fair bit of discussion about its story which delved into the psychological effects of war on soldiers. I was amazed that a military shooter, a genre that usually omits any effort when it comes to storytelling in lieu of spending money on graphics and multiplayer content, was making waves over its plot and a complex sounding plot at that.

I figured that I couldn’t name the game one of my 12 favourites of last year without giving it a try. So when it went on sale during the recent Steam sale, I put my money where my mouth was to see if it was actually worth a spot on the blog’s de facto year-end award list. Read the rest of this entry

Super Hexagon Review: My Eyes! The Goggles Do Nothing!

super-hexagon-logoOne of the surprise entries on many year-end lists was Super Hexagon. In a year where small indie games were more fondly thought of and better reviewed than many triple-A releases, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the one-man development team of Terry Cavanagh was able to produce a critically acclaimed game. However, I wasn’t sold on what appeared to be such a simple game so I had to pick it up and give it a go. Read the rest of this entry
