Ubisoft Changes Tune on AC:Unity Again. Now They’re Targeting 30 FPS.

assassins-creed-unity-logo-headerNot only is Ubisoft getting really good at putting their foot in their mouth but they only open their mouth to change feet. After saying that Assassin’s Creed Unity was going to be locked to 30 FPS to not favour one console over the other and then correcting that statement to say that it’s a CPU limitation, Ubisoft has come up with a third official explanation of why their next Assassin’s Creed game is going to run at only 30 FPS.

This week’s third explanation is that the team is targeting 30 frames per second because that is a more cinematic looking framerate than 60 FPS.

Steam Converts Canadian Gamers to Canadian Dollar Pricing

steam-canadian-dollar-bannerWith a couple of week’s notice, Valve has added local currency pricing for Canadians. This past Tuesday, October 7th, Canadians found the Steam Store showing prices in Canadian dollars rather than US dollars. This resulted in a price increase on the face of the store but this may actually be working to the benefit of the Canadian consumer.

Assassin’s Creed Unity Runs at 900p and 30 FPS on Both Consoles

assassins-creed-unity-headerThere have been a lot of complaints about the graphical fidelity and the smoothness of video of games on next-gen consoles. However, Ubisoft’s treatment of Assassin’s Creed Unity isn’t just upsetting one console’s user base but the whole of gaming.

In an interview with VideoGamer, AC Unity senior producer Vincent Pontbriand said that the resolution of ACU would be set at 900p and framerate locked to 30 FPS on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The reasoning behind that is so baffling that everyone has turned against Ubisoft.

A Look at Steam Discoverability with Indie Devs, Writers and PR

With the recent Steam Store overhaul to improve discoverability of games and customization of the store, Popular YouTuber and common sense advocate John Bain, better known by his nom de plume, TotalBiscuit, held a panel discussion to look at the effects of the changes to Steam and the advertising of video games.

As part of his three-hour roundtable, he is joined by indie developers Howard Tsao (Guns of Icarus), Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone) and Andrew Spearin (Insurgency), writer Mike Rose (Gamasutra) and PR rep Tom Ohle (Evolve PR) for the discussion.

Game Trailers Roundup for October 6, 2014

There are a couple of big releases tomorrow and I have trailers for none of them. That doesn’t make for a particularly topical game trailers roundup. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have trailers for games you want to know more about.

Today’s roundup includes trailers for Civ: Beyond Earth, Far Cry 4, Dying Light and Dragon Age: Inquisition. If those don’t strike your fancy, you can always watch a launch trailer for Styx: Master of Shadows and a teaser for F.E.A.R. Online. Not a bad little post for watching.

Kickstarter Investments Projected to be Down as Much as 50% in Gaming for 2014

kickstarter-logoThe last couple of years have been great for independent gaming. With the consoles opening themselves up to be more open to indie devs publishing on the platforms and the growth of Steam and Humble Bundle, there are more indie games now than ever before. Also helping that was the rise of crowdfunding of games through Kickstarter.

However, really only a couple of years into the crowdfunding revolution in indie games, it might already be dying. A study suggests that 20% fewer Kickstarter projects in gaming are getting funded this year compared to 2013 and the dollars invested year-on-year could drop as much as 50%.

Assassin’s Creed with Cats

Apart from pirate adventures, it’s not too controversial to suggest that the annual iterations of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise are getting a bit stale. Sure, Unity looks to be the first AC game to try to push the next-gen hardware with big crowds, fancy graphics and co-op gameplay but is that really what we want from our Assassin’s Creed games?

I think we really want Assassin’s Kittens Unity. Wouldn’t Assassin’s Creed be better if you played as assassin cat? That shouldn’t even be a question. That’s a fact. Did you play AC3?

Game Trailers Roundup for September 29, 2014

Once again, we have quite a few trailers for you this week. A pair of those are launch trailers. Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor has been getting near universal praise from critics and comes out tomorrow. Crimes & Punishments: Sherlock Holmes is our other launch trailer and that’s already been out for a few hours now.

There are a few trailers for other upcoming games. Metal Gear Solid V, CoD: Advanced Warfare, WWE 2K15 and The Witcher 3 all have new trailers. Perhaps most exciting is the announcement of United Front Games’ new game, Triad Wars. After Sleeping Dogs, I was looking forward to the next kung fu action game from Vancouver’s UFG.
