Papo & Yo Review: A Game in a Metaphor

papo-and-yo-bannerWhat make a video game a game? That’s a question that is being asked with increasing frequency. It’s also a question that one could ask about Papo & Yo. It’s a game with a story and a message hidden behind a metaphor but the actual “gameplay” is fairly thin. So does that mean it’s a game or a metaphor?

Microsoft to Unveil the Next Xbox on May 21

xbox-2013-announcement-bannerThe long wait for the third of the next-gen console will finally end on May 21st as Microsoft officially unveils their next generation of Xbox. And while we expected Microsoft to unveil the console before E3 so that show would focus on the games, we didn’t think that Microsoft would come into this announcement having spent the last three or so months losing the PR battle.

Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves Review: Cold Blooded Action

sang-froid-box-artFor Canadian Gaming week, we’re looking at reviewing three games. Two will be indie efforts and one will be published by a major studio. We start our Canadian Gaming Week reviews, with the indies. It’s a recently released game from new Quebec-based developer that touches on early Canadian culture and throws it into a game that hits three different genres.

I’ve never been interested in tower defence games but I’m willing to give one a try if it’s from a Canadian developer so rookie dev Artiface Studio was able to take my $15 based on my Canadian pride. By the end, I’d say that Artiface’s Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves certainly earned it.

Dorkly’s How Buying Videogames Is Different From Buying Everything Else

I’m not sure whether to file this comic from Dorkly under funny because it’s true or if it’s sad because it’s true. Last Friday’s gaming comic covers the difference between gamers and everyone else when it comes to buying things. From the initial announcement to reviews to the announcement of the next version of the product, this isn’t so much a satirical take as completely factual documentation.

Comic Book Pull List for April 24, 2013

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-21Another week brings us more new releases at your local comic book store or equivalent establishment where comic books are sold. Apparently, my hometown also has a skateboard/vinyl record/comic book shop in the opposite end of town. That would be classified under “equivalent establishment where comic books are sold.”

Right, this week, I’ve got a Marvel pick in my top three. Marvel promises a visually stunning comic in tomorrow’s A+X #7. I know comic books aren’t about the visuals but great art is still pretty damn cool. The Flash gets called in to help JLD in this week’s Justice League Dark #19. TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman is back to draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #21. As Michael Bay takes the movie into scare territory for long-time Turtles fans, at least the comics are trying to stick to what we knew and loved.

TotalBiscuit on the Problem with Always-Online Consoles

No one likes the idea of a console or even a single game being always-online. We’ve seen it fail upon launch enough times to know it’s a bad idea. Prominent video game commentator TotalBiscuit had a great example of why always-online just won’t work for everyone.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Dead Island: Riptide

dead-island-riptide-box-artThought you scraped out of the zombie apocalypse by the skin of your teeth? Think again. Dead Island is back in the sequel Riptide. The first Dead Island had some decent visuals but was mostly underwhelming after a spectacular trailer. This time, there was no trailer and almost no hype.

So can this game score well with low expectations this time around? It really seems that it depends on who you ask. One thing that everyone agrees on that this game sure can be buggy and repetitive.

The XCOM Shooter has a Viral Video Ad

YouTube user Veritas MCMLXII has one video. It’s a video that claims that March’s Russian meteor strike wasn’t actually a meteor but a cover story. He says that they used to erase the data but the truth doesn’t stay covered up forever.

So what does this have to do with the XCOM shooter? Well, in English, the username translates Truth 1962. That would coincide with the recent report that 2K Games has registered domains along the lines of The Bureau and What Happened in ’62. It’s probably not a coincidence that this username is called Truth 1962 and 2K registered whathappenedin62.com.

Because It’s So Awesome, Here’s Patton Oswalt’s Vision for Star Wars Episode VII

I know that I linked to Patton Oswalt’s Star Wars Episode VII filibuster from Parks and Recreation in last week’s Geek Links of the Week. However, it’s far too awesome to relegate to just a link in a linkdump. It’s deserving of its own post.
