It Begins! The Steam Summer Sale is Go!

steam-summer-sale-2013-headerAs I mentioned yesterday, the annual Steam Summer Sale started today. The first deals went live at 1:00 PM Eastern. There will be the usual collection of 48-hour daily deals, 8-hour flash sales and 8-hour community pick deals. However, good luck buying anything right now. Steam is getting hammered with traffic.

We’ll be keeping tabs on the big sales and dropping PSAs for you to checkout under the Steam Sale link on the top banner.

For now, here are the active daily deals (ending July 13th at 1:00 PM Eastern) and flash sales (ending at 9:00 PM Eastern).

PSA: Steam Summer Sale Starts July 11

A very important FYI for PC gamers: Valve has issued two separate confirmations that the annual Steam Summer Sale will begin on July 11th. If you’re reading on the day this post was published, the sale starts tomorrow.

The first confirmation is a notification to a Russian Steam user to top up his Steam wallet for the sale which will run from July 11th to the 22nd. The other is an email from Steam support to a user that reminds him that the sale starts on the 11th.

I hope you’ve been saving for this. Well, not that you need to save a lot with those deals.

PSA: The War Z is Now Called “Infestation: Survivor Stories”

The controversial zombie MMO, The War Z, has a new name that you should be aware of with the Steam Summer Sale fast approaching. The War Z has been rechristened as Infestation: Survivor Stories after the United States Patent and Trademark Office said that publisher OP Productions couldn’t trademark The War Z.

If you recall, The War Z launched in December on Steam and was quickly the subject of much controversy. It was launched as a largely incomplete game with numerous graphical and gameplay issues. It was quickly pulled after it was revealed that the game’s description and promotion screenshots contained numerous inaccuracies. The game was relaunched in February but wasn’t reported to be any better.

Currently, the game has a score of 20 on Metacritic.

The Showdown Effect Beta Impressions

the-showdown-effect-bannerWho doesn’t love the good old action movies of the 80s and 90s? There’s something epic about one man taking down a horde of terrorists and other baddies using nothing but a couple of guns, a ton of ammo and a few well-timed catchphrases.

While action movie games haven’t really translated over to video games, with the exception of Uncharted (though that’s more Indiana Jones action-adventure than an Arnie/Sly/Bruce action flick), the folks at Arrowhead Games are giving it a try with The Showdown Effect. Read the rest of this entry

10000000 Review: What’s In a Name?

10000000-logo-box-artAnother iOS port to PC. I’ve had such good luck with iOS games that why shouldn’t I pick up another iOS game ported to PC. After all, it’s not like Death Rally was an over-priced, under-performing game or Super Hexagon made me physically ill. Oh wait…

That brings me to the latest iOS port to make it Steam and subsequently make a dent in my wallet. 10000000 (that’s “ten million” because developer EightyEightGames doesn’t believe in commas… or spaces) is a puzzle-RPG hybrid that sees you fight your way through a dungeon with the ultimate goal of scoring 10,000,000 points in a run. When you find that tidbit of information, the game’s title makes a lot more sense, doesn’t it? Read the rest of this entry

CES 2013: Wednesday Roundup

The second day of the 2013 edition of CES wasn’t just a technology and gadgetry show but had a little Presidential pizazz thrown in as President Bill Clinton made an appearance at the Samsung keynote to talk about the importance of technology in the developing world. But we start with some of the biggest news for gamers to come out of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

steam-big-pictureSteam Box – Gabe Newell actually calls Valve’s upcoming console the “Steam Box”
As for as gamers are concerned, it looks like The Verge scored the big news scoop of CES. Their interview with Valve CEO Gabe Newell shined a lot of light on to Valve’s plans for hardware going forward. Read the rest of this entry

CES 2013: Tuesday Roundup

We’ve had a couple of days of action at CES already but Tuesday marked the official opening day of the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show. In addition to some very interesting product news, we had our first keynote presentation of the show from Panasonic.

sony-ces-2013Sony 4K TVs and Movies – Sony looks for the first mover advantage
Sony’s home entertainment strategy seems to be going all-in on 4K. So far at CES, they’ve announced 4K Ultra HD TVs, a prototype 4K OLED TV, a prototype professional 4K video camera, a prototype 4K Handycam, 4K Blu-Ray discs and 4K streaming movies. Yes, it’s all 4K, all the time from Sony. Well, that would be a good strategy if it all isn’t likely to be prohibitively expensive. The only price Sony has announced is a $25,000 price tag on their 84″ 4K LCD TV.

It’s a sound business plan. If Sony expects that 4K Ultra HD is going to be where the consumer market goes next, being the first mover into the market is generally considered a good move. It would probably be better if they backed it up with 4K output compatibility from the upcoming PS4. I figure that the inclusion of Blu-Ray on the PS3 put that in enough homes to push it over the top in the war with HD-DVD. Maybe the PS4 can get 4K in homes too… When the prices come down.
