How Much Would WoW’s Stormwind Keep Cost? (Infographic)

The folks over at Movato have a real cool hobby. They frequently do valuations on fictional real estate. World of Warcraft fans would be fans of their latest in-depth valuation. They’ve taken a look at Stormwind Keep and valued it in both real dollars and in-game gold, in case Blizzard decides that they need to sell it off.

Gaming Can Be Good for You (Infographic)

Gaming tends to have a bad reputation with the older crowd. They think it ruins your mind and makes people violent. I think we went through this with rock music and rap at other points in time. It turns out that there have been quite a few observed benefits to gaming, be it mentally, physically and socially.

Journey in Real-Life Might Not End Well

Journey was my favourite game of 2012 and easily the best indie game of the year. It’s also been a reasonably popular game for cosplayers. However, if you’re planning to cosplay Journey, you might not want to do it outside of a convention.

TBT: The Black Tower Needs Your Money to Make Your Classic JRPG Dreams Come True

tbt-the-black-tower-bannerI don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that Final Fantasy just isn’t what it used to be. That stretch on the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 from 7 through X-2 was full of great games that people still love and still want to play. Given the desire for an old school JRPG, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the growing indie segment of the market is coming to the rescue.

Last week, the crowd funding campaign for TBT: The Black Tower started. If you’re a fan of the old-school J-RPGs like the PS1-era Final Fantasy games and Xenogears, a group of French developers need your money to make this homage to the great JRPGs happen.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Remember Me

remember-me-box-artA few weeks back, I wrote a column that lumped Fuse and Remember Me together as new IPs that could help gamers through a dark and dreary period of time of sequels and reboots. Well, I’d like to admit that while my heart was in the right place, I may have been jumping on the wrong multi-platform games to champion as new IPs to save us from the tyranny of franchise monotony.

There’s a fairly wide gap in scores but the overall consensus that the idea is pretty nice but the combat and actual gameplay leaves quite a bit to be desired. Well, at least I didn’t read a review saying that Capcom locked out half the game for DLC.

Atari’s ET Burial Site to be Unearthed

et-atari-2600-box-artWe’ve all heard the urban legend about the massive failure that was Atari’s E.T. game. The story goes that Atari were expecting their ET game to be a massive commercial success following how big a hit the movie was. However, Atari massively over estimated demand for the game and the initial production run left scads of unsold cartridges when all was said and done. To get rid of the unsold games, Atari dumped and buried ten to twenty transport trucks full of unsold ET games at a landfill near Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Until now, that story was just an urban legend. Now, a Canadian documentary crew is setting out to find out if the story is actually true or if the Great Atari Burial is just an urban legend.

The Successor to Eternal Darkness “Shadow of the Eternals” Hits Kickstarter

shadow-of-the-eternalsMature-rated games aren’t exactly common on Nintendo consoles but that doesn’t mean that they didn’t exist. One of the best games you never heard of on the GameCube was the survival horror Eternal Darkness by Silicon Knights.

Silicon Knights may have died some years ago as a result of a lawsuit but from its ashes has risen Precursor Games and they’re bringing back their iconic game with a spiritual successor with the episodic Shadow of the Eternals. To do so, you need to give them a little help on Kickstarter.

Element4l Review: Slip Sliding Away

element4l-logoSometimes, I need to play a game that’s on the calm side. As fun as driving cars at speeds approaching 200 MPH and shooting baddies with overpowered weapons is, I like to throw a quiet game into the rotation to mix things up. Lately, that’s been the oddly spelled but appropriately titled puzzle platformer Element4l.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Grid 2

grid-2-box-artCodemasters and race sims goes hand-in-hand. As much as I like the F1 and Dirt series, I absolutely loved the TOCA series. Sadly, that series is dead. It’s now the hybrid arcade/sim Race Driver: Grid series which was shortened to just Grid for the second iteration in the series.

Grid 2 tries to find the middle-ground between a sim racer and an arcade racer. Some critics think it hits the mark while others find the opponent AI to hamper what could be a good experience. And let’s not mention all the fun Day One DLC you missed out on by not pre-ordering the game. Did you know that Codemasters has ESPN tie-ins with Grid 2. So does EA with its sports games. Can’t be a coincidence given the DLC BS.

Space Combat Sim “GoD Factory: Wingmen” Needs Your Money on Kickstarter

god-factory-wingmen-screenshot-01I’ve been waiting a long while for a solid space sim. I was hoping that Rogue System would be that game but, unfortunately, their Kickstarter didn’t work out. Now, there’s a Canadian company that’s giving me hope. Quebec’s Nine Dots Studios needs your help to make their epic looking GoD Factory: Wingmen a reality.
