Man of Steel 2 Now Called “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”
Just when you thought that Superman was back in a big way with last year’s blockbuster Man of Steel, DC Comics and Warner Brothers want to remind you who is on top of the DC food chain.
The sequel to the Superman reboot is not only not a Superman-focused movie but Superman doesn’t even get top billing. The Man of Steel sequel is now officially known as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Before I really get into the complaining, I want to start with this: The state of your spelling, mate! Are you getting charged by the letter for the title? What’s so bad about “vs” or even *gasp* “vs.” instead of just “v?” Sure, it looks prettier and people are still going to officially call is “Batman versus Superman” but you’ve left yourself open to people calling it “Batman vee Superman.” That’s the opposite of what you want because you wanted the visual and just don’t know human nature. Also, isn’t “v” used in legal proceedings instead of “vs?” We are expecting a fight, not a lawsuit.
I understand what DC and WB are doing with this title. They could have called it “Man of Steel 2: The Next Movie is the Justice League” and it would have been a more subtle title. Warner Bros is currently developing a Justice League movie penciled in for 2017 or 2018.
I’m just disappointed that the Superman sequel doesn’t seem to matter in his own film franchise. If they didn’t pretend that it was the Man of Steel sequel to begin with, I wouldn’t mind. If it was “Justice League Begins” from the start, I would still think this is a bad name but I probably would be as mad about it. However, Batman gets top billing. Marvel/Disney treats its superstar characters’ franchises with some respect but not making them Batman’s bitch.
Granted, we knew long before this new name was unveiled that this wasn’t going to be a Superman movie, even if it was produced as part of Superman’s film franchise. Not only is Batfleck starring in the film but Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) are making appearances. We didn’t need the allusion to the Justice League in the title to tell us that this was the prelude to the Justice League movie.
Okay, done ranting.
So we have a title for the alleged Superman sequel. I’m not a fan and I haven’t seen too many people who are. I suppose that the important thing is that the movie is good. Hopefully it makes up for the title.
