Building (Critical) Consensus: Lost Planet 3

lost-planet-3-box-artRemember Capcom? Weren’t they a great developer and publisher back in the day? Whatever happened to those guys? Oh, that’s right. Capcom is still in business and making games that do nothing to help their iconic legacy in the industry. The company that brought us Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and more have hit a bit of a dry spell recently.

The latest disappointing game out of Capcom is Lost Planet 3 which, despite the name, is actually a prequel to the first Lost Planet game. The critics aren’t very fond of this one. The general consensus is that the gameplay is tired, dull and repetitive, even if it does a better job with the narrative than its predecessors.

Trouble When You Warped In

Viva La Dirt League is a group who make StarCraft themed music videos. Their latest is a Protoss themed parody of a Taylor Swift’s I Knew You Were Trouble. As an aspiring Protoss bronze leaguer, I found this hilarious so I decided to share it here with you guys.

Nintendo Announces the 2DS

nintendo-2ds-bannerMicrosoft followed Nintendo into the realm of motion controls and now Nintendo is following Microsoft in naming new consoles with a lower number than the previous one. The difference is that Nintendo’s new console name makes sense.

Launching on October 12th (the same day as Pokemon X & Y) is a 2D-only entry-level version of their 3DS portable console called the Nintendo 2DS.

This Fan-Made Batman/Superman Trailer is Your First Look at Batfleck and Walter White

Love it or hate it, Ben Affleck is Batman now. Okay, he’s Bruce Wayne. We’re still not sure how he’ll do as Bats. Now, reports say that Bryan Cranston will get his wish to play Lex Luthor in the upcoming Batman/Superman movie (AKA Man of Steel 2). With that info, it’s never too early to see how Batman/Superman could turn out. We have this pretty cool trailer by Soylent Brak 1 that gives us our first almost-look at Batfleck and Walter White in the DC-verse.

EA Says They’re All-In on Free-to-Play and Out of Offline Experiences

ea-logo-headerBefore a panel at Fan Expo about the state of the gaming industry (my column on my experience is coming soon), someone said that free-to-play was the future of gaming industry for the foreseeable future. I thought about it and disagree. I think Titanfall eschewing the traditional single-player campaign for multiplayer matches bracketed by some story components is going to be more common going forward.

It turns out that EA COO Peter Moore said that we’re both right. In fact, going forward, Moore says that we’ll see more free-to-play elements in the major franchises while offline experiences will be no more.

Comic Book Pull List for August 28, 2013

justice-league-23This week is a big one for DC Comics fans. The Trinity War comes to an end in Justice League #23. The teaser says that this won’t end well for the Justice League. I only have all five parts to catch up on before I get to reading this. Yeah, I’m a bad DC Comics fan.

Elsewhere, Dark Horse has something for the kids with the launch of a new series called Itty Bitty Hellboy. In the Marvel-verse, the Thanos Rising miniseries that’s a prelude to the Infinity miniseries comes to a conclusion after Infinity #1 was released in Thanos Rising #5.

And one other important note: DC’s Collider is now known as FBP Federal Bureau Of Physics. I liked the old name better.

Programming Note for August 22 – 27

Hi folks. I have a quick PSA for the rest of the week.

I’m off for the rest of the week and into next week so the blog will be going quiet for the next few days. Unfortunately, this means that I won’t be covering any of the big news from Gamescom as it happens. I’ll do a wrap up of the biggest announcements and stories next week.

Expect normal programming to resume next Wednesday.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

tom-clancys-splinter-cell-blacklist-box-artI’ve never really been a fan of stealth games. Apart from Mark of the Ninja, I’ve never played a stealth game or a stealth level in a game that left me so angry at the game and its mechanics that I usually found myself rage quitting rather than gritting it out for a 20th time.

The Splinter Cell franchise has one that has traditionally been based on stealth gameplay so you can probably understand why I haven’t picked up any games in the franchise. The reviews are very positive for Blacklist but not the aggregated scores aren’t the best in the franchise’s history. Unless you’re Joystiq who calls it the best game in Splinter Cell history.

Building (Critical) Consensus: The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

the-bureau-xcom-declassified-box-artXCOM has had a rather interesting path from when it was first conceived in 2006 to its release yesterday. It started as a first-person survival horror shooter before being redesigned as a third-person tactical squad-based shooter. XCOM was originally an Irrational Games project before getting moved to 2K Marin. And it was delayed from its original release date of 2011 to the same day on 2013 that Saints Row IV and Splinter Cell: Blacklist were released. Not exactly what one would call a promising history.

Well, Jim Sterling’s leaked review on Destructoid wasn’t exactly a harbinger of reviews to come for The Bureau. It might be the lowest review but nobody’s given this game higher than 80% either which is kind of low by today’s gaming critic standards. The critics all seem to agree that the game’s tactical squad-based combat is in need of some polish but it’s executed well enough to be different from the other myriad of third-person shooters. We’re supposed to be getting our own review copy from 2K so I’ll let you know what I think soon.

Gamescom 2013: PlayStation Reminds You That It’s About the Games

playstation-4-gamescom-2013-bannerAs has been their modus operandi for 2013, where Microsoft has some good news, Sony is not far behind to say “anything you can do, I can do better.” That includes during Gamescom with Sony’s keynote address in which they found a way to trump Microsoft’s earlier presser in nearly every possible way. It wasn’t quite the massacre that E3 was but Sony still came out guns a-blazing.
