Doctor Who – Hide Review

doctor-who-hide-posterIt’s always nice when Doctor Who does a horror episode. It sure has come a long way from an educational-ish program in the 1960s to today. I find it kind of funny that the rebooted Doctor Who does the horror episodes better than the time travelling or The Doctor doing battle with classic foes. That was definitely the case with this week’s Hide.

Geek Links of the Week

You may not know the name Rae Johnston but you know her story. A guy in line at a coffee shop scoffed at her love of gaming because she was wearing a BioShock Infinite t-shirt so she spoiled the ending for him. She gives her in-depth recounting of the story and doesn’t even spoil the game for me. [Rae Johnston] No, I’m not done yet. Don’t judge. I’ve been busy.

Have you heard of Spiral Game’s Orion: Dino Beatdown? If you haven’t, that’s because Spiral Game Studios removed all mention of it from Steam and replaced it with the “new release” Orion: Dino Horde. While Dino Beatdown was panned far and wide (it got a 2/10 from IGN of all places), Dino Horde gets a fresh slate as far as Metacritic is concern. However, Dino Horde appears to be largely the exact same game as Dino Beatdown but with some minor improvements. We’re used to the big publisher having shady business practices but it’s painful when the indies do it. [Reddit]

Patton Oswalt was on Parks & Recreation this week as a citizen filibustering Pawnee city council. Oswalt was told to ad-lib his filibuster. The result was an eight-minute long description of what he wanted from Star Wars: Episode VII. It’s a damn cool idea and I like that he recognizes that Hawkeye and Black Widow are on Marvel’s B-team. [HitFix]

Disney says that they’re going to be releasing one Star Wars movie a year starting with Episode VII in 2015. This deal’s getting worse all the time. They won’t be happy until they’ve bled all the money out of Star Wars and discard it as a failure when the fans stop caring due to the eventual declining product quality and oversaturation. Fuck Disney. I can’t anymore. I’m done for the week. [/Film]

Game of Dinklage

Along with many geeks (and lovers of good TV), I love Game of Thrones. The last time someone asked me who my favourite character was, I answered with one word: Dinklage. I know that I should have said Tyrion but Tyrion Lannister just wouldn’t be half as awesome a half-man if it wasn’t for Peter Dinklage.

Now, you can catch all of The Dinklage’s greatness in a short compilation of all of Tyrion’s greatest quips and one-liners.

This Duck Hunt Pinball Machine is the Great Game Ever

I’m terrible at pinball but that’s never stopped me from playing a game whenever I get the chance. Given the chance, I would definitely try this Duck Hunt pinball machine by Skit-B Pinball. The game was built as a side project but it’s absolutely spectacular. The playing field (Is that the right term for a pinball machine?) uses visuals that look straight from the game and the video board uses graphics and sound effects straight from the classic NES game.

Best of all, you can give that stupid dog what’s coming to it. This game is probably the only thing in history that has resulted in people wanting to shoot a dog.

He’s Still Super: A New Man of Steel Trailer is Out

As a Superman fan, I am equal parts excited and scared of the upcoming Superman re-reboot Man of Steel. On the one hand, Christopher Nolan is involved as a producer and he brought rebooted Batman back from a joke to something closer to the comics. On the other hand, Man of Steel is being directed by Zack Snyder of 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch fame. That’s reason to be nervous.

However, the latest trailer for Man of Steel has me optimistic for June. After all, more Jor-El, more Jonathan Kent and more Lois Lane is a good thing.

EA Has Money For You… Thanks to a Lawsuit Settlement

Are you one of the millions of gamers who regularly buy one of EA Sports’ football games? Thanks to a lawsuit over EA Sports’ exclusive licenses to make games for various sports leagues, you can get some money back. If you bought an EA Sports Madden NFL, NCAA Football or Arena Football game between January 1, 2005, and June 21, 2012, you’re entitled to a not insubstantial claim.

The History of LucasArts

LucasArts is and was one of my all-time favourite publishers. They facilitated some great games from when I was growing up like the Dark Horse / Jedi Knight series, Tie Fighter, Rebel Assault (Shut up! I liked it.) and Knights of the Old Republic. That’s not counting the other massively popular LucasArts games like Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion and Grim Fandango.

Victor Lucas of the popular Canadian gaming news show Electric Playground looks back at the history of LucasArts. For a quasi-Easter Egg, watch for a young Geoff Keighley at the 3:34 mark as he worked in his early days in the gaming press.

Kirk Needs a Bigger Ship in the Latest Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer

The third Star Trek Into Darkness trailer brings us a little less Cumberbatch and a lot more Kirk as we finally get to see a bit more of what the crew of the Enterprise is up against.

In the last trailer, Cumberbatch came off as smarter and more charismatic than Kirk. Now, Cumberbatch comes off as a bit crazier and much scarier thanks to his massive ship with epic armaments. Kirk looks to be in over his head and has gotten his ship in and crew into some pretty deep shit.

Star Trek Into Darkness is hits theatres on May 17th.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Injustice: Gods Among Us

injustice-gods-among-us-box-artI don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before but I’m a DC Comics guy. I feel as though that would make a good t-shirt. Specifically, I’m a Superman guy. I know I mentioned this one last week. Now, we finally get our chance to pit Superman against Batman. Oh, and most of the other DC Comics regulars also appear in NetherRealm’s new fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us.

We’ve gotten a DC Comics fighting game from a Mortal Kombat developer before. That was the entirely forgettable Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe by Midway. With NetherRealm now at the helm of Mortal Kombat and having just released the best story in fighting game history in Mortal Kombat (9), could they do something special with Injustice?

Hotline Miami in Real Life

What happens when Hotline Miami invades the streets? The crew at Mega 64 found out that people are either confused, concerned or far to quick to call the cops when a man in a chicken mask assaults two guys using a baseball bat.
