Valve Announces SteamOS

steam-os-headerValve promised us three announcements this week. People are hoping for things like the long-awaited Steam Box, an official debut of the Source 2 engine and, as always with a Valve announcement, Half-Life 3.

However, Valve’s major announcement caught everyone completely off guard. While we were expecting hardware or a game, we instead got a new computer operating system that Valve calls SteamOS.

Left 4 Dead 3 Accidentally Leaked

Just when you thought that Gabe Newell and his team at Valve couldn’t count to three, a photo from a tour of Valve’s office showed that they are working on the third game in a franchise. No, it’s not Half-Life 3 (yet) but the likely to be hotly anticipated Left 4 Dead 3.

Building (Critical) Consensus: Dota 2

dota-2-logoIt’s been a couple of years since we first saw Dota 2 in the wild but we recently got the official full release of Dota 2 on Steam. Dota 2 is the sequel to the Warcraft III mod Defence of the Ancients (DotA) which is considered the first game in the MOBA genre.

I’ve not gotten into Dota 2 yet but now might be as good a time as any if you’re curious about Dota 2, MOBAs or one of the more popular e-sports in the industry right now. Seeing as Dota 2 is a free-to-play game that doesn’t try to gouge you at every opportunity, that puts it above the competition right from when you start it up.

PSA: Steam Summer Sale Starts July 11

A very important FYI for PC gamers: Valve has issued two separate confirmations that the annual Steam Summer Sale will begin on July 11th. If you’re reading on the day this post was published, the sale starts tomorrow.

The first confirmation is a notification to a Russian Steam user to top up his Steam wallet for the sale which will run from July 11th to the 22nd. The other is an email from Steam support to a user that reminds him that the sale starts on the 11th.

I hope you’ve been saving for this. Well, not that you need to save a lot with those deals.

How to Build an Aperture Science Lemon Grenade

Alright, I’ve been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade – make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons!

Anyway, Portal 2 is one of my favourite games of all-time and Cave Johnson is probably the most quoteable man in gaming history. Johnson’s best quote in Portal 2 (though there are many to choose from) was the speech about lemons. Well, Jen over at EPBOT has constructed an Aperture Science (not actually) combustable lemon and even has some DIY instructions on how to build your own lemon.

The second day of the 2013 edition of CES wasn’t just a technology and gadgetry show but had a little Presidential pizazz thrown in as President Bill Clinton made an appearance at the Samsung keynote to talk about the importance of technology in the developing world. But we start with some of the biggest news for gamers to come out of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

steam-big-pictureSteam Box – Gabe Newell actually calls Valve’s upcoming console the “Steam Box”
