Killzone Shadow Fall is a 50 GB Download, Next-Gen to Destroy Your Bandwidth Cap
After seeing the latest bit of news on the size of PS4 launch title Killzone Shadow Fall, I think we should all consider ourselves, and our wallets, lucky that both Sony and Microsoft are sticking with games on discs for the next generation of video game consoles.
Sony Computer Entertainment UK revealed that the digital download of Killzone Shadow Fall will be a 50 GB download. For comparison, that’s almost twice the size of The Last of Us and about 10% of the PS4’s hard drive capacity.
Devs Say the PlayStation 4 Massively Outperforms the Xbox One
Gamescom 2013: PlayStation Reminds You That It’s About the Games
As has been their modus operandi for 2013, where Microsoft has some good news, Sony is not far behind to say “anything you can do, I can do better.” That includes during Gamescom with Sony’s keynote address in which they found a way to trump Microsoft’s earlier presser in nearly every possible way. It wasn’t quite the massacre that E3 was but Sony still came out guns a-blazing.
GameStop’s Supply of PS4s Runs Dry, Halts Pre-Orders
In June, Sony gave GameStop carte blanche to take as many pre-order for PlayStation 4s as they could. Supply wasn’t going to be a concern. An internal memo to GameStop store from management said “the floodgates are open.”
Well, it seems that the floodgates were a bit too open for Sony to keep up with. The standard PlayStation 4 console is no longer available for pre-order on GameStop’s website as they’ve sold out of PS4s.
PlayStation 4 Plans to Release More Exclusives Than Xbox One
While Microsoft came out guns-a-blazing at their May console launch in promising exclusives for their new console. Along with the console, they announced that the Xbox One would get 15 exclusive games during the console’s first year and eight of those will be from new franchises.
Now, Sony is firing back with their own big line-up of first year PlayStation 4 exclusives. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan told Gamereactor that the PlayStation 4 can expect 20 exclusives on the console in the first year after release with 12 of them being new IPs.
E3 2013: Driveclub PS Plus Edition is Free-to-Play
Didn’t getting a PlayStation 4 launch title for free for being a PlayStation Plus subscriber sound almost too good to be true? Well, that’s because it actually is too good to be true.
Sony confirmed that the PlayStation Plus Edition of the PS4 launch title Driveclub is going to operate on a free-to-play business model. You can get the game for free but some of the game’s tracks and cars will be locked out until you buy them.
E3 2013: More Info Leaks About the PS4 and Its Interface
While Microsoft tried to get as much info about the Xbox One out ahead of E3 this year, Sony went the opposite direction with the PlayStation 4. As a result, it looks like the whole week could have PS4 hype, especially when compared to what we’ve heard about the Xbone.
Some new info has come out about the upcoming next-gen console about the PS4’s new user interface and the how it handles the hard drive.
E3 2013: PlayStation 4 Won’t Allow Online Passes (Updated)
UPDATE: Scott Rohde, software product development boss for Sony Worldwide Studios America, has spoken to Gamasutra and explicitly said that “we’re not going to allow online pass.” DRM was off, then on, now off again. The title of the article has been updated to reflect this new information with the original article following.
E3 2013: Sony Wins the Next Generation in June
Sony had one simple mission heading into their 2013 E3 press conference: Don’t screw it up! Microsoft handed Sony an absolute gift at every turn from the Xbox One’s DRM to privacy issues to used games to rentals to the price.
Not only did Sony not screw up their press conference, they committed the video game console equivalent to homicide. Sony played the Rains of Castamere live on stage and slew the Xbox One in a bloody and violent way that saw them destroy Microsoft’s next-generation challenger in every way possible. Even George R.R. Martin was shocked at the carnage.
