The Avengers 2 is Avengers: Age of Ultron
At the end of the Marvel movies panel at Comic Con, Joss Whedon spilled the beans on the upcoming sequel to last year’s big blockbuster The Avengers. Rather than Thanos showing up after his appearance during the credits in The Avengers, we’re getting another classic comic villain.
Coming in summer of 2015 is The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Ultron certainly isn’t the best known comic book villain in the Marvel-verse but he’s considered a pretty good one. Ultron is an artificial intelligence who is often seen as a robot. As with any comic book character, his powers have varied over time but generally he has superhuman strength, speed and durability. The robot’s armor has traditionally been made from adamantium which is the same metal in Wolverine.
What will be interesting is where does Ant Man come into this movie. Henry Pym, the alter ego of Ant Man, created the Ultron AI. If you were ever wondering why Marvel was working on an Ant Man movie, this is why.
Besides the fact that Thanos was teased for this movie, it’s surprising that Marvel will go with Ultron because newer storylines aren’t often featured in blockbuster comic movies. Recently, Marvel wrapped up the Age of Ultron series. I doubt this movie will recreate this story because it started with the Earth under Ultron’s rule. I’d imagine that some ideas would be borrowed from that.
In addition to Ultron, we can expect the first appearances of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch who are Magneto’s twin children. Since Fox still owns the movie rights to the X-Men and Sony owns the Spider-Man rights, I’m going to guess that we shouldn’t expect those usual Avengers in a proper Avengers movie anytime soon.
