GLaDOS Explains Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Fission for NASA

When you need an artificial intelligence to put in charge of some important science, you’re going to want Aperture Science’s Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, also known as GLaDOS. Sure, some people might consider her evil but she is dedicated to the scientific cause. And I think we can put our differences behind us… for science… you monster.

In this video, GLaDOS explains the differences between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission to two NASA IT techs.

You’ve Never Heard of the Sheng Before but It Plays a Mean Super Mario Theme

The Sheng is an ancient Chinese musical instrument whose origins date back to around 1,100 BC. They are still made and played today but it seems that very few people know about them outside of China. However, it may just gain traction based on how perfectly it plays the Super Mario Bros. theme. I know Koji Kendo composed the SMB soundtrack using pianos but the sheng is just too perfect at this.

Here’s Final Fantasy VII’s Boss Battle Music Played by 16 Floppy Disc Drives

MrSolidSnake745 on YouTube is famous for recreating famous pieces of music using eight floppy disc drives. Chances are you’ve seen at least one of his videos, be it this one or his Ghostbusters theme or What is Love. In his latest video, he doubles the number of floppy drives he typically uses to play Final Fantasy VII’s boss music, Those Who Fight Further.

Gravity Gets an Honest Trailer

It may be a critically acclaimed, award nominated movie but I haven’t really been too interested in Gravity. Sure, it looks pretty but the commercials didn’t seem to indicate much to the movie besides visuals and a panicking Sandra Bullock. And this edition of Honest Trailers… doesn’t do anything to change my mind actually.

And while I know that Honest Trailers takes the piss out of movies, between this and the terrible DVD ads, Sandra Bullock does seem a bit like Homer Simpson when he did his stint with NASA. Her character doesn’t exactly seem like she would ever make it past NASA training. Oh well. Suspension of disbelief and all that.

Crucifictorious Reunites on Friday Night Lights / Parenthood Crossover

This probably doesn’t fall under the usual list of things that we cover on etg but I thought that this was too neat not to post. I’m a big Friday Night Lights fan so when we get a reunion of Landry Clarke’s (played by FNL/Breaking Bad/Battleship alum Jesse Plemons) band Crucificorious, I’m going to post that video.

Clear eyes, full hearts…

Make Way for 2014’s Game of the Year: Goat Simulator

It’s only the start of February and we haven’t seen the likes of The Witcher 3, Titanfall or inFamous: Second Son but I think that the 2014 GOTY (or is that GOATY?) has just been announced.

Goat Simulator is a little indie game by Coffee Stain Studios that puts you in the hoofs of a goat. The developers describe the game thusly:

“Goat Simulator is a small, broken and stupid game. It was made in a couple of weeks so don’t expect a game in the size and scope of GTA with goats. In fact, you’re better off not expecting anything at all actually. To be completely honest, it would be best if you’d spend your $10 on a hula hoop, a pile of bricks, or maybe a real-life goat.”

The Facebook Page Like is a Lie

Facebook has outlawed the use of clickfarms to increase the number of likes on a Facebook page. They’ve banned a number of fake accounts designed solely to like pages that pay for it. However, it’s these fake accounts that are generating millions of dollars in advertising revenue for Facebook.

Veritasium shows how Facebook advertising is based on a lie and how that actually hurts your page as a result.

Game of Thrones Meets the NFL in this Awesome Super Bowl Intro

It seems that the Austrians have two great loves: The National Football League and Game of Thrones. The two were combined into what is simply the greatest intro in sports TV history. Austrian channel PULS 4 combined the two for their intro for last weekend’s Super Bowl. Too bad none of the sports broadcasts on this side of the Atlantic are this cool.

Could Lightning Returns: FF13 Be Teasing a Final Fantasy VII Remake?

Julian Kluk of Clever Noob has found some interesting patterns with Square Enix’s marketing of next week’s Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Square Enix has a spent a lot of time marketing the game’s tie-ins with older Final Fantasy titles through DLC attire for Lightning and including a number of FF7 Easter eggs in LR:FF13. Could this all be a sign of Square Enix getting people ready for a Final Fantasy VII remake?

Commander Shepard: A Dramatic Reading‏ by Mark Meer

Any time I get to feature Mark Meer doing something cool, chances are that I’ll take it. That includes this video of Mark doing a dramatic reading of the lyrics to Miracle of Sound’s Mass Effect tribute song Commander Shepard. Maybe I’m biased but I think this is absolutely fantastic.

Remember, you can fight like a Krogan, run like a leopard but you’ll never be better than Commander Shepard.

I should go.
