Comic Book Pull List for June 26, 2013
Last week, I noted how DC followed up on the spectacularly successful release of Man of Steel (which I still haven’t gotten time to see yet) with absolutely no Superman comics. This week, they correct that with five different comics featuring Superman and that’s not including three trade paperbacks with Superman stories.
For the Superman fan, you can pick up two solo Superman titles with Adventures of Superman #2 and Superman #21 both out this week. Supes also teams up with his fellow Justice League friends in Justice League #21 and Injustice: Gods Among Us #6. And my first pick of the week is a new Superman series with Batman called Batman/Superman #1.
After all that, I still have two more picks that I have to give you. Since I was raised to be a huge kaiju fan, I’m looking forward to Godzilla: Rulers of the Earth #1. And you should give Image’s The Bounce #2 a read too.
Comic Book Pull List for June 19, 2013
Man of Steel came out last weekend. Unlike Superman Returns, which we’re all going to pretend never happened, Man of Steel was loved by critics and movie goers. I’m working hard to make the time to see it but I’m a bit busy at the moment. The first free two hours I get through…
Disappointingly, DC didn’t follow-up the movie’s release with a new Superman comic after having three straight weeks of Superman/Justice League comics before Man of Steel came out. DC does have a new miniseries coming out from the award-winning 100 Bullets series with Brother Lono #1. If you’re more of a TV fan trying to ease into comics, Mulder and Scully are back to continue their story in X-Files Season Ten #1. On the Marvel front, their critically acclaimed Fantastic Four series continues this week with FF #9.
Comic Book Pull List for June 12, 2013
It’s a good week to be a Superman fan, the new Superman reboot Man of Steel is in theatres this weekend and there’s no possible way that it can be worse the Superman Return. There’s also a new Superman comic series that debuts this week after last week’s new series. This one is Superman Unchained #1 and is the first of my picks of the week.
If you’re looking from something from Marvel, you should check out Wolverine and the X-Men #31. The series is a bit hit and miss but it’s hits are big hits. And now for something a bit different. Dark Horse has a new series based on My Chemical Romance’s latest album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, with The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1. That’s the first time I remember seeing a comic series based on an album.
Comic Book Pull List for June 5, 2013
After an absolutely epic week for comics last week (and a painful week for my wallet though my local comic book store disagrees), things quiet down a bit this week. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have some interesting prospects for this Wednesday’s new releases.
First up this week, let’s talk about Green Lantern #21. Geoff Johns time at the helm of the Green Lantern series has come to an end after 10 years writing GL comics. Now, we get to see what Robert Venditti can do with the Lantern Corps. A new Daredevil series kicks off this week with Daredevil: Dark Nights #1 helmed by artist Lee Weeks. And a new story arc kicks off in the Archer & Armstrong series in Archer & Armstrong #10.
Comic Book Pull List for May 29, 2013
There are some neat comics coming out this week. I’d hazard that there might be something for everyone this week, whether you’re a fan of sci-fi, superheroes, long-running series or newly-debuting comics.
My three picks of the week are all new releases. The one I’m most interested in the new series focused solely on the women of the X-Men. Your favourite X-Women debut this week in slightly confusingly named X-Men #1. DC Comics and Vertigo are teaming up for a new sci-fi horror mini-series The Wake. Finally, the legendary John Carpenter takes the helm on his first comic series in Asylum #1.
Comic Book Pull List for May 22, 2013
Alright, I may have been a bit optimistic by saying things would be better this week than last. My own personal pull list is busier this week but not by much.
My big three picks of the week include a couple of brand new series and one issue that may as well be a new series. From the mind of video game designer American McGee is Akaneiro #1. DC is finally getting in on the whole economic disparity thing after Chris Nolan did in The Dark Knight Rises. A group of the super rich are funding projects that sounds like it’ll eventually run afoul of some superheroes in Green Team Teen Trillionaires #1. And it all begins again in Superior Spider-Man #10. Did you read SSM #9? It wasn’t as good as some earlier issues but I’m counting on it to set the table big time for future issues.
Comic Book Pull List for May 15, 2013
I feel bad saying that this week is a relatively quiet week but I’m not seeing too much on this week’s list that I’m particularly interested in. That’s not to say that there aren’t some good comics this week.
My picks for the week include the comic book revival of Battlestar Galactica. For the 35th anniversary of the classic show, the series gets its own comic book starting with Battlestar Galactica #1. Captain Marvel gets her own big story in Avengers Enemy Within #1 that’s a cross-over between her and The Avengers. Since I’m trying to get some of the better efforts from the big guys in these posts, let’s remind you that Wonder Woman #20 is coming out this week after a pretty good #19 last month.
Comic Book Pull List for May 8, 2013
I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I missed Free Comic Book day this weekend. I was a bit busy with things around the house. Some of that will be revealed in the near future by which I mean hopefully by the end of the month.
In the meantime, here are my picks for the week. Dark Horse brings back X for a miniseries. The masked vigilante had a 25 issue run back in the mid-90s and gets a four issue run over the summer. The Justice League of America is back this month with Justice League of America #3. Apparently, we’re getting another JLA in two weeks and one each in June and July. Plan your buying accordingly. And to mix things up with my last pick, go grab a copy of Deadpool #9. Why not? It’s Deadpool.
Comic Book Pull List for May 1, 2013
This week, I’ve tried to pick from a different batch of publishers than I usually do. Only one of this week’s comic picks of the week are from the big four publishers. That would be Hawkeye #10. The new Hawkeye series is critically acclaimed and nominated for scads of awards. Now’s probably as good a time as any to get into one of the best comics on shelves today.
From slightly smaller publishers, we go to Dynamite and Valiant. This week, Dynamite relaunches classic 1930s pulp magazine character The Black Bat in Black Bat #1. Over at Valiant, Shadowman gets a prequel comic to his current series that launched last November with Shadowman #0.
Comic Book Pull List for April 24, 2013
Another week brings us more new releases at your local comic book store or equivalent establishment where comic books are sold. Apparently, my hometown also has a skateboard/vinyl record/comic book shop in the opposite end of town. That would be classified under “equivalent establishment where comic books are sold.”
Right, this week, I’ve got a Marvel pick in my top three. Marvel promises a visually stunning comic in tomorrow’s A+X #7. I know comic books aren’t about the visuals but great art is still pretty damn cool. The Flash gets called in to help JLD in this week’s Justice League Dark #19. TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman is back to draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #21. As Michael Bay takes the movie into scare territory for long-time Turtles fans, at least the comics are trying to stick to what we knew and loved.
