Marvel is Back with 700 Free #1 Issues

If at first you don’t succeed, offer free digital comics again. When Marvel last tried to offer free digital downloads of the #1 issues of over 700 comics, they were so overwhelmed with demand that they had to shut it down because the servers couldn’t handle the number of people looking for the most epic free stuff ever (until DC does the same thing).

A few weeks later, Marvel and Comixology are back with their Marvel #1 giveaway. You have until 11:59 PM Eastern Time tonight to sign up for your 700+ free #1 issues of Marvel comics.

You can sign up for the promo through Marvel or Comixology.

The Original Star Wars Story will Be Told in a Comic

We all know the story of Star Wars fairly well thanks to the six movies (soon to be more) and the Expanded Universe. However, as some of you likely know, that wasn’t the original story that George Lucas put to paper.

Now, with the permission of Lucas himself, the original screenplay is being brought back to life in the form of Dark Horse Comics’ upcoming series, The Star Wars.

Comic Book Pull List for April 3, 2013

superior-spider-man-7Good news! I found my local comic book shop. Like I said, it shares space with a hobby store and was a little small so the selection wasn’t quite the full pull list. Maybe if I patronize them regularly, I can get a file and can get comics sent there or however that works.

As always (or at least like last week), we have our arbitrarily selected comics of the week. I’ll get better at it in time. First up is Superior Spider-Man #7 in which Spidey faces the consequences of his recent actions. For gaming fans, there’s a comic-book prequel to The Last of Us with The Last of Us: American Dreams #1. And in a bit of nostalgia for the comics I did read growing up, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics Volume 4 trade paperback is out tomorrow.

Also, as I mentioned yesterday, the new Doctor Who magazine (issue 458) is out this week and has news on the 50th Anniversary Special.

Comic Book Pull List for March 27, 2013

injustice-3I’ll readily admit that we don’t do very well covering comic books for a geek blog. In my defense, I was only able to track down where I can buy comic books in my hometown (in a hobby shop rather than a standalone comics shop). Now I’m going to have to start making weekly visits on Wednesday when the new comic books get released.

What am I looking at this week, you might (though are unlikely to) ask? Well, seeing as the fan voting is down to the final four, I’m looking forward to Injustice #3. I missed Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time #2 so that’s on my list. More importantly, it’ll move up Doctor Who fans’ must-buy lists if we don’t get a 50th Anniversary special on TV. Finally, I’m a huge Judge Dredd fan so Judge Dredd #5 is on top of my must buy list this week.

As you can likely tell, I’m still getting back into comic books. I’ll try to make better picks next week.

This Week in PBS Documentaries: The Rise of Web Comics

I have to give PBS’ Off Book credit. They’re putting out some pretty good short documentaries about web culture. It sure shakes the stereotypical image of PBS of kids shows, imported British programming and fundraising drives.

This time out, Off Book looks at the rise of the web comic.

Mass Effect Is Getting an Ongoing Comic Book Series Called Foundation

mass-effect-foundation-cover-artAt last weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con, Mass Effect 3 lead writer Mac Walters revealed that the Mass Effect series would spawn a comic book series. While the Mass Effect saga is no stranger to comic books, previously, it had only been in the form of one-off digital comics or short miniseries.

Now, Mass Effect is getting a full-fledged comic series to be published by Dark Horse that will span at least twelve issues. It will be called Mass Effect: Foundation.
