Okay, short of getting Mark Vanderloo, the actual model for BroShep, to cosplay as Commander Shepard, this is the most mind-blowing bit of Mass Effect cosplay you’ll ever see. It’s the voice of Commander Shepard, Mark Meer, cosplaying as Commander Shepard with the face of Samara and Morinth, Rana McAnear. I told you that it was pretty mind-blowing.

Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC Review: An End, Once and For All
This is it, isn’t it? One last ride with Commander Shepard as we take on a group of well-armed and ill-intentioned bad guys in order to save the galaxy with our friends in tow. BioWare made us well aware that this was going to be the final piece of DLC released for Mass Effect 3. In effect, Citadel would be a send-off for the series that people had invested so much time and energy into over the last six years.
So how was our ride into the sunset with Commander Shepard and crew?
Cosplaying Violinists Play a Journey Medley
Yesterday, we had Austin Wintory’s detailed commentary of the music he composed for last year’s Game of the Year, Journey. Today, we’ve got more Journey music.
This time, we have violinist Taylor Davis and some intrepid cosplayers put together this two-song medley from Wintory’s Journey score. The songs in this are Apotheosis and I Was Born For This. While you might not know the songs by name, you’ll certainly recognize the sound of the music and the costumes that Davis and friends are wearing.
Epic Space Sim “Rogue System” Needs Your Money on Kickstarter
I very seldom mention the projects I find interesting on Kickstarter. However, I’m willing to make an exception to post this one. Rogue System is a new space sim being developed by Digits Crossed Interactive. This isn’t any normal space sim, though. Checking out the videos that DCI and boss Michael Juliano have posted show that this is the sim-iest and most intense space sim that I’ve ever seen… And okay with that. Read the rest of this entry
Austin Wintory Guides You Through The Journey Soundtrack
The score of Journey was just as much a reason as the visuals and story as to why Journey was considered one of the best games of 2012. It was the little indie darling that did damn well near everything perfectly.
Now, composer Austin Wintory takes you through an hour of his epic Grammy-nominated soundtrack for Journey with text commentary.
Geek Links of the Week
Considering that I run a geek blog, it should come as a surprise that I have a rather large collection of late 90s and early 2000s Star Wars novels. Even I can tell that they aren’t all good. Just read early Luceno stuff when he relies too heavily on references to events from the movies. Anyhow, here are 12 of the worst things in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. [io9]
Robert Kirkman, he of The Walking Dead fame, is creating a new comic series about exorcism. It hasn’t even come out yet but it’s already in development for TV. This man pretty much prints money now. [The Hollywood Reporter]
Andy Ihnatko explains why he went from being a long-time iPhone user to an Android man. [TechHive]
If Mr. Burns were to need to call in nine ringers to start for the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant softball team today, which MLB superstars would he/Smithers get and what odd fate would prevent them from making the big game? [The Triangle]
In my big weekly gaming column that I have on a couple of sites, I examine the reasons why publishers are pushing their big releases back to the after-Christmas season. [The Lowdown Blog]
EA and Maxis Scramble To Get SimCity Functional
Good news for SimCity fans: EA and Maxis are working tirelessly to get everyone playing SimCity in as stable a manner as possible. The bad news is that their scrambling involves hurridly adding servers, patching issues that are causing performance instability and disabling what they consider to be non-critical features in order to address server issues.
A First-Person Lightsaber Duel is Every Bit as Cool as You’d Think
While first-person melee combat doesn’t quite work in video games, especially in Star Wars: Jedi Knight series because all the cool moves are in third-person mode, it does work in YouTube videos. The crew over at The Stunt People put together this lightsaber duel between Darth Vader and a Jedi from the first-person perspective. I’d say this is almost as good as the action from the prequel trilogy.
Building (Critical) Consensus: SimCity [Updated]
My time with the SimCity beta made me think that this is what players of the original X-COM went through when last year’s reboot was launched. It was familiar but it wasn’t the same. While it was nice to have SimCity back, it just didn’t feel like the SimCity that I knew and loved. But based on what the critics think, maybe I was wrong to feel turned off by the streamlined controls and the game telling me I have a slow rig.
When reading through this, please note that some reviewers trying to be the first ones out at embargo never had a chance to experience the queues to get on to servers, download issues or had the ability to download it locked out while Origin sorted its shit out. It’s also unlikely that press members on the one dedicated media server found out that your cities are locked to the server you created them on. It’s probably a bit early to be cynical about the whole thing but isn’t always-online DRM a magical thing? Read the rest of this entry
Mass Effect Is Getting an Ongoing Comic Book Series Called Foundation
At last weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con, Mass Effect 3 lead writer Mac Walters revealed that the Mass Effect series would spawn a comic book series. While the Mass Effect saga is no stranger to comic books, previously, it had only been in the form of one-off digital comics or short miniseries.
Now, Mass Effect is getting a full-fledged comic series to be published by Dark Horse that will span at least twelve issues. It will be called Mass Effect: Foundation.
