Star Wars Marks Eight Months to The Force Awakens with a New Trailer

I’ve never heard of Star Wars Celebration but it’s a semi-regular convention and fan event held by LucasFilm with the first three Celebrations coinciding with the release of the prequel movies. Naturally, they held one ahead of this December’s release of Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

The highlight of this year’s Star Wars Celebration was the release of the second trailer for The Force Awakens.

If you want to go into the movie blind, you may want to stop reading here because there’s going to be a bit of analysis from this point on.

If anything, I think that this trailer is a mix of the old and the new. There are remnants of the original trilogy with the downed Star Destroyer, Darth Vader’s helmet and the Millennium Falcon. There is an element of what’s old is new again. Stormtroopers, TIE Fighters and TIE pilots have all been given a visual upgrade while Ben Burtt’s iconic sounds remain the same.

What I find most interesting is the lightsaber. The implication from Mark Hamill’s voiceover is that Leia is being presented with a lightsaber. It’s not just any lightsaber though. Keen-eyed Star Wars fans will immediately pick it out as Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber which also happened to be Luke’s first lightsaber. How that came into someone’s possession after being lost at Cloud City at the end of Empire Strikes Back is a mystery I’m looking forward to seeing resolved.

By the way, based on the hype for this trailer, analysts are already predicting over $1 billion in box office gross with a new inflation-adjusted record for the franchise. Star Wars (rechristened Episode IV – A New Hope) earned an inflation-adjusted $1.1 billion at the box office. Early predictions for The Force Awakens run from $1.2 billion to $1.8 billion.

So while I think early reaction to the original teaser was a bit mixed, everyone is hyped for The Force Awakens. While we don’t know what the movie will be about, especially since the Expanded Universe was just retconned out of existence, all the pieces are there for this to be a fantastic sequel. Mind you, we probably thought this about The Phantom Menace.
