Microsoft Leaks Show Big Plans for the Xbox One This Year
After a rocky initial announcement and slower sales than the PlayStation 4 at launch, Microsoft is going full-tilt to right the ship and assert the dominance of the Xbox One in the console market.
A number of leaks by NeoGAF user nktrnl, which were subsequently verified by various gaming news outlets, indicate a number of big games and console plans for the Xbox One over the next twelve months to get it on top of the current generation of consoles.
Nktrnl was verified as a legitimate source by NeoGAF moderator bishoptl so chances are there is some truth to what he posted. The Verge also independently verified a number of the items posted by nktrnl.
The most interesting ones for gamers are Microsoft’s plans for the Halo franchise on the Xbox One. The upcoming Halo 5 has been delayed and won’t be released in 2014. In its place, Microsoft will release a Halo 2: Anniversary Edition which is an HD upgrade to Halo 2 in the same style as the recent Halo Anniversary game. To make up for the Halo 5 delay, all copies of H2A will come with beta access to Halo 5.
The game will come with two versions available. There will be the “Collectors’ Edition” which comes with the game and Halo 5 beta access. The second version would be the “War Collection” which includes H2A, Halo 5 beta access and Xbox One ports of Halo 3 and Halo 4. Nktrnl also indicates that the plan is for Halo 3 and 4 to only be available through the War Collection rather than being individually released.
Halo 2: Anniversary Edition is expected to be released on November 11th with Halo 5 to follow about a year later.
New versions of the Xbox One console are also expected to be released this year. A special Titanfall edition Xbox One will be released alongside the game. A white Xbox One will hit shelves in October. And November will see an Xbox One with a 1 TB hard drive be released in time for the holiday shopping season.
No price drops have been confirmed by ntkrnl but he did mention that Microsoft is working on a version of the console that does not include the Blu-Ray drive. An optical drive-less is currently being tested by Microsoft. Ntkrnl mentioned it’s possible for the Blu-Ray-less Xbox One to be released at $399. He didn’t mention if Microsoft was planning to stop bundling the Kinect to consoles to facilitate a price drop but one would imagine they’d be pondering that too.
Elsewhere, ntkrnl says to expect Xbox One exclusives Forza Horizon, Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive are all set for fall releases. Sunset Overdrive is scheduled to release alongside the white Xbox One console. Folks looking for the next Gears of War or Crackdown 3 will have to wait until 2016. And Black Tusk Studios’ other project, codenamed Shangheist, is apparently cancelled to make room for Gear of War.
So if you’re on the fence about an Xbox One, Microsoft is certainly planning to do everything in their power to convince you to join the green-and-black attack. It’s probably the most excited that Xbox fans can get about the XB1 since last year’s E3.
