We’ve probably all watched the Pokemon TV series that spawned off the Pokemon video game franchise. People who have played/watched both know that the original star of the game was Red (or Blue if you played the Blue Version) but he never appeared in the TV series. That honour went to Ash Ketchum.

Now, Red is getting his day in the sun. At a Pokemon event in Tokyo on Saturday, we saw the first official announcement of a new anime based on the original game starring Red called Pokemon: The Origin.

Pokemon: The Origin will follow Red through the story of the Pokemon Red/Blue game. It will debut in Japan on October 2nd with no English language premiere date yet announced. There will also be a new anime tie-in to Pokemon X/Y debuting October 17.

Right now, there seems to be a lack on consensus as to whether The Origin will be a TV movie or an ongoing series. I’m hoping for the latter but TV has always been about Ash so I’m not holding my breath.
