The Successor to Eternal Darkness “Shadow of the Eternals” Hits Kickstarter

shadow-of-the-eternalsMature-rated games aren’t exactly common on Nintendo consoles but that doesn’t mean that they didn’t exist. One of the best games you never heard of on the GameCube was the survival horror Eternal Darkness by Silicon Knights.

Silicon Knights may have died some years ago as a result of a lawsuit but from its ashes has risen Precursor Games and they’re bringing back their iconic game with a spiritual successor with the episodic Shadow of the Eternals. To do so, you need to give them a little help on Kickstarter.

If you’ve not heard of Silicon Knights or Eternal Darkness, I doubt you’re alone but it seems that you were missing out on a pretty good game. Its GameRankings and Metacritic scores were both over 90 and is ranked as the 12th greatest GameCube game of all-time.

Apart from being an episodic game, Shadow of the Eternals looks to be a proper successor to Eternal Darkness. Shadow will cover a number of characters over about 2500 years. Like Eternal Darkness, there will be a mix of combat, magic and sanity elements that you have to deal with to make it through the game.

The game will play out over twelve episodes that Precursor has broken up into three different tiers. The episodes are being sold a la carte at $5 per episode but you can get the first six episodes at the early bird $25 level and all twelve episodes of Season One at the $50 pledge level.

Precursor Games is looking to raise $1.35 million to complete Shadow of the Eternals. They are raising money on their own website but say that they’re likely to cancel the game if the Kickstarter campaign fails. They also promise that they’ll refund donations through their site if they cancel the game.
