Building (Critical) Consensus: The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

I warned you about The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct back in January. That footage that Terminal Reality gave IGN at the end of December wasn’t going to get any better by a March release date. And if you followed me on Twitter, I gave you advance warning that Activision and Terminal Reality weren’t taking review copy requests for the game.

The problem isn’t solely with the graphics and animations though. The levels are repetitive  The survivor group management mechanics are effectively pointless. Basically, every review about this game says that TWD: Survival Instinct is little more than a cash grab using a popular license.

Game Informer (5/10): Outside of these interesting narrative nuggets, Survival Instinct sinks its infected teeth into monotony and carelessly chews away at it to deliver a repetitious experience that lets a few cool ideas go to waste. This is an apocalypse you don’t want to survive.

Polygon (3/10): The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is the exact sort of lazy, cheap cash-grab that gave licensed games a bad name in the first place. To put a slightly less nostalgic twist on an old cliche: They don’t make ’em like this anymore.

Giant Bomb (1/5): The storytelling is spartan to the point of very nearly not existing, which means that much of the time you’re spending in the game revolves around annoying resource gathering and errand missions that are not only not fun, but incredibly frustrating.

EGM (1.5/10): Though a functional game at the most basic level, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is an absolute disaster from start to finish. It feels like Terminal Reality duct-taped several different half-finished projects together and assumed the brand tie-in would move units. It’s an absolute disgrace—both to the TV show it’s based on and video games as a whole.

Kotaku (Worst Game of 2013): I can think of no compelling reason why anyone should play this game. Ugly, flat, boring, aggravating and often broken, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is the purest form of video game garbage. It’s utterly unworthy of your time and money.
