E3 2014: Conan Previews Super Smash Bros.

If you want to make a big wave in marketing your game at E3, you don’t take your game onto IGN or anyone else’s all-day E3 livestream or even make it a part of your media briefing. You take your in-development game to Conan O’Brien for a Clueless Gamer segment.

For his latest Clueless Gamer segment, Conan took at look at the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

John Oliver Calls Trolls to Arms to Save Net Neutrality

One of the important parts of my post Game of Thrones ritual is staying up to watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO. (I don’t stick around between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM because that’s when I watch Cutthroat Kitchen on the Food Network.)

This week, John covered the death of Net Neutrality at the hands of money-grubbing corporations. He also touched on the fallacy of competition in the regional monopoly system but that’s a different matter. In his look at cable and internet providers and what they’re doing to kill the internet, he had an epic call to arms for the denizens of the internet to save net neutrality from the abyss made dark by corporate interests.

A Video Game of Thrones

What’s this? A double dose of Friday of Ice and Fire? I saw this video yesterday and couldn’t bring myself to not show you this week. That’s why you’re getting two editions of Friday of Ice and Fire for the price of one.

A YouTuber by the name of NicksplosionFX has recreated the Game of Thrones intro using scenes and maps from Super Mario World. He’s even got a 16-bit version of the theme for the video. The whole thing is just awesomeballs.

Watch Jon Snow’s Longclaw Getting Forged

We’ve featured videos from YouTube’s Man at Arms before but now I can do it for Fridays of Ice and Fire. In a recent episode of the show, swordsmith Tony Swatton forged his own copy of Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw. I never would have guessed that replicating a sword would involve so much work I couldn’t even imagine how swords were made centuries ago.

What if Star Wars Was a Tarantino Movie?

Who doesn’t like a good recut trailer? Here’s one that I liked that shows Star Wars (Episode IV – A New Hope for people who weren’t around for when it was only called Star Wars) cut as a Quentin Tarantino movie. A bunch of the classic Tarantino hallmarks are in there like the vintage music, a lot of violence and some sharp Han Solo dialogue. You’d almost want to watch this movie if you didn’t realize that you’ve already watched it countless times.

Star Wars: Battlefront III Alpha Footage Leaks

star-wars-battlefront-iii-free-radical-headerFirst: No, this isn’t footage from the upcoming EA DICE-developed Battlefront game that is due out in 2015. However, with EA confirming that they would be showing more of the new Battlefront at E3 in June, this leak couldn’t have come at a better time.

Many years before EA revived the Battlefront franchise, Free Radical Design was working on a new Battlefront game, to be called Battlefront III, for LucasArts. After two years in development, LucasArts pulled the plug on the game and Free Radical quickly shut down.

Now, more alpha footage of that six-year-old, unfinished Battlefront III has been leaked by YouTube’s Gamer Spawn showing both ground and flight combat as well as hero characters, multiple playable races and some story content. It looks like a damn shame that this one was cancelled.

Three Seasons of Game of Thrones Deaths in Three Minutes

I hate when I find something cool on the internet that I want to post but push it back to post other things first. For example, at some point for a Friday of Ice and Fire, I wanted to post this video of all the on-screen deaths in Game of Thrones. However, it was out of date basically from the start of the season. Well, it’s only going to get more behind on deaths from here so I may as well post it now for your viewing pleasure.

By the way, spoilers.

There’s Even an Honest Trailer for Game of Thrones

Since I’m taking tomorrow off as a holiday (and I could really use a couple of days to not think about blogging and just recharge), I’m moving the usual Friday Game of Thrones post up to Thursday. I guess that makes today Thursday of Thrones.

This week, it’s an honest trailer for Game of Thrones that’s filled with spoilers. It also does a good job of pointing out how terrible of an idea it is to be Sean Bean or know Sean Bean in any fictional work. It does work out surprisingly badly.

George R.R. Martin: Wedding Planner

Did you know that A Song of Ice and Fire author and Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin also does wedding planning in his spare time? I kind of wish that he’d worry more about the books than TV or weddings but he does plan some memorable weddings.

By the way, spoilers.

Luke Ritson is Back with an Epic GTA5 Trailer

When it comes to fan-made trailers, there is no one better than Luke Ritson. Back in August, we featured his take on a  BioShock Infinite trailer. This time out, he has a trailer for Grand Theft Auto V that focuses on all three of the game’s playable characters and The Boss added in for good measure. Seriously, someone get this guy a job.
