Steam Summer Sale: June 23, 2014
Since I seem to be making a habit of naming the sales that are up as I make these posts, I think I might call this one the “Holy crap! It only costs how much?” pack. If I told you that I would sell you Dark Souls, Hitman: Absolution and Awesomenauts for less than $10, would you go for that? You can do it with this sale.
Awesomenauts is actually on for $1 right now on a flash deal so you should jump right on that. Failing that, you can get the following games (among others) for less than $5: Dark Souls, FTL, Rogue Legacy, Surgeon Simulator 2013 and Hitman: Absolution. If I didn’t own all of these games, I would suggest that I would break the bank on this one. I did that on previous sales, though.
How Steam is Striking Gold with the Summer Adventure
When Steam launched the 2014 edition of the Steam Summer Sale, it came with a new wrinkle that no one saw coming. No, I’m not talking about the four packs of Community Picks. This time out, Steam introduced the Summer Adventure to the sale. While it looks like a little competition between users for prizes, it’s actually another quiet way for Valve to make a few dollars more from Steam.
Steam Summer Sale: June 22, 2014
So if I called yesterday’s deals the critically acclaimed set of games, right now, you’re looking at the Something For Everyone pack. there are shooters and RPGs and horror games and even some casual games. Chances are that if you really want to spend some money, you’ll find something to spend it on today.
Steam Summer Sale: June 21, 2014
The red team won yesterday’s Steam Adventure challenge which doesn’t do me a bit of good because I didn’t win anything off my wish list. If we use today’s peak of 7.2 million users as a proxy for the number of players on all the teams, that means you have a one in 1.44 million chance of winning some games. It’s not the best incentive ever when you do the math.
Anyway, today’s daily deals are the critical acclaim set. You have Dragon Age: Origins and Skyrim for the RPG and fantasy fans. Indie gamers can pick up The Stanley Parable and Terraria if that’s more their speed.
Steam Summer Sale: June 20, 2014
So the Purple Team won Day One of Steam Summer Adventure. What does that mean? I have no idea but you best believe that I’m going to be writing a column explaining why this is a new way to reinvigorate the Steam Marketplace. As if Valve wasn’t going to be making enough money from this sale to begin with.
Like yesterday, I’m a little at a loss for games that I haven’t bought yet. At a certain point, you’re going to run out of games you want to play that you don’t own. Maybe it was for the best that there wasn’t a Spring Sale this year.
The 2014 Steam Summer Sale is Underway!
From now until the end of the month, many of the games you’ve been looking forward to playing will be on discount during the annual Steam Summer Sale. As usual, the sale will include the Daily Deals that run for 48 hours, Flash Sales that run for 8 hours and Community Picks that also run for eight hours. If you want to buy a game, make sure it falls into one of those three brackets or you’re spending too much.
By the way, Community Picks now come in four packs. You vote for the set you want to win rather than just the individual games. More discounts for everyone!
Steam Summer Sale 2014 Dates Leak
Sorry to interrupt your E3 coverage but I thought that it would be a bit more important for you to get your wallets ready for the apocalypse. Did I say apocalypse? I meant 2014 Steam Summer Sale.
A reported leak over on NeoGAF says that this year’s Steam Summer Sale will run from June 19th to June 30th.
Valve Delays Steam Controller to 2015
The Force is Not with Steam’s Star Wars Weekend Sale
To mark Star Wars Day (May the 4th, if you still need to ask), Valve had a special Star Wars sale on Steam in which all the Star Wars games in its collection were on sale. Even I rounded out my collection with some games that I have floating around on CD somewhere but would need a fair bit of work to get running again on modern hardware and software.
I ended up getting lucky with my purchases. While the Force can allow you to sense the future, Valve underestimated the popularity of the promotion and ended up short on keys for it.
The Economics of Steam Trading Cards and the Steam Wallet
It’s been six months since Steam introduced their Trading Cards. When they first launched, I was utterly confused as to why anyone would be interested in virtual trading cards that had no purpose and no value. It just seemed like a way for Valve to make some money that no one would buy into.
However, having just completed the Steam Holiday Sale, it’s readily apparent that Valve has hit a home run with the Trading Cards. It’s not just the transaction fees that are making Valve money. The spin-off effect from Trading Cards does just as much to make Steam even more profitable.
