Comic Book Pull List for September 4, 2013

the-star-wars-1There are some big things for comic fans this week. I hope you have been saving up because this could be a painful week for your wallet. If your a big DC Comics fan, you should change that to “painful month.”

This week begins Villains Month in the DC-verse. The big series will have four issues this month with each about a villain from that series. That’s anchored by the Forever Evil miniseries in which the villains of DC have taken control of the world.

Elsewhere, Marvel fans have Infinity #2 for our reading pleasure. Dynamite has a new four-issue miniseries for us with zombie comedy Mocking Dead #1.

And Dark Horse launches what should be a massive series this week. It’s the debut of The Star Wars. The latest Star Wars comic series isn’t an expanded universe tale but an adaptation of George Lucas’ original Star Wars script. I’m definitely looking forward to this one.

justice-league-23This week is a big one for DC Comics fans. The Trinity War comes to an end in Justice League #23. The teaser says that this won’t end well for the Justice League. I only have all five parts to catch up on before I get to reading this. Yeah, I’m a bad DC Comics fan.

Elsewhere, Dark Horse has something for the kids with the launch of a new series called Itty Bitty Hellboy. In the Marvel-verse, the Thanos Rising miniseries that’s a prelude to the Infinity miniseries comes to a conclusion after Infinity #1 was released in Thanos Rising #5.

And one other important note: DC’s Collider is now known as FBP Federal Bureau Of Physics. I liked the old name better.

Comic Book Pull List for August 21, 2013

justice-league-trinity-war-directors-cut-1If you’re into DC Comics’ Trinity War, there’s two comics for you to pick up. First is the second-to-last issue in the Trinity War. It’s part five of six in Justice League Dark #23. If you want something closer to a collector issue, DC has Justice League Trinity War Directors Cut #1 which features Geoff Johns’ original script and Ivan Reis’ artwork presented in pencil. I’m actually going to try to get my hands on that one.

Outside of DC’s New 52 universe, the folks at Valiant explore the origin of Bloodshot in Bloodshot #0. And the women of X-Men continue their story in X-Men #4.

Comic Book Pull List for August 14, 2013

infinity-1This week, your friendly local comic book shop is taken over by the battle of the big summer events. Both Marvel and DC have issues featuring their big summer blockbuster stories this week.

DC’s offering is part four of the Trinity War in Justice League of America #7. Meanwhile, Marvel kicks off its big summer miniseries with the return of Thanos in Infinity #1.

If you’re looking for something from a publisher other than the big two this week, I’ll give you a debut and a conclusion to keep your eyes open for. Video game fans might be interested in Halo: Initiation #1. And the Doomsday.1 miniseries wraps up with Doomsday.1 #4.

Comic Book Pull List for August 7, 2013

frank-millers-robocop-last-stand-1This week’s recommendations includes a superstar with a new miniseries. Well, unless you’re a Superman fan because I’m fairly certain that Frank Miller isn’t a big fan of Supes. At least, that’s my impression from that Batman miniseries he did a while back. Anyway, Frank Miller is back with Robocop: Last Stand which should be a must buy for Robocop fans.

From the big two, we have a pair of offerings. Avengers A.I. #2 is out this week which should interest people who don’t know what to expect from the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie. Meanwhile, DC, in conjunction with Vertigo, launch the rather unique looking Trillium miniseries in Trillium #1.

Comic Book Pull List for July 31, 2013

captain-midnight-1Well, I’ve certainly found some interesting offerings if you’re looking for something just a little bit different from this week’s comic book releases. Dark Horse continues its “new superhero initiative” with the debut of the vintage styled Captain Midnight in Captain Midnight #1. Wolverine has a very unique new culinary mystery series written by Top Chef Masters winner Chris Cosentino called Wolverine In The Flesh #1.  And the Judge Dredd Year One arc ends in Judge Dredd: Year One #4.

superior-spider-man-team-up-1For those of you keeping track of your month-long events, the third part of the Trinity War goes down this week before taking a week off. It’s Justice League Dark #22. It’s not my in file so I’m going to have to make a visit to the store this week.

As for my picks, I’ve got three #1s this week. Superior Spider Month continues with Superior Spider-Man Team Up #1 which sees Spidey team up with some of his Avengers friends. If you’re looking for something a bit off the beaten path, Dynamite has a horror crossover with Army Of Darkness vs. Hack/Slash #1. And seeing as we cover a lot of Mass Effect on the blog, I think that I’m obligated to mention Mass Effect: Foundation #1 which features a new character in the Mass Effect universe and may or may not somehow tie in to the Citadel DLC.

batman-66-1This week marks the release of the second issue of DC Comics’ Trinity Wars between the three Justice Leagues. Part two is in this week’s Justice League of America #6. However, that’s not one of my three picks of the week.

Getting the theme month issue pick is Marvel with Superior Carnage #1 which is part of their Superior Spider Month. The DC Comics pick of the week is something I’ve been looking forward to since it was announced. It’s Batman ’66 #1 which sees us pick up with the Caped Crusader as the stories from good old days with Adam West carry on. And Red Sonja gets a reboot courtesy of Dynamite in Red Sonja #1.

Comic Book Pull List for July 10, 2013

justice-league-22This is a big week for DC Comics fans. The Trinity War that crosses over between Justice League, Justice League of America and Justice League Dark starts this week in Justice League #22. It’s a two-month, six-issue story arc that sees the three Justice Leagues do battle with each other. Given that the DC universe is making this its summer focus, it has to pay-off in a big way. So Justice League #22 is the first of this week’s three recommendations.

IDW is bringing back some vintage Judge Dredd stories for the new Dredd audience in Judge Dredd Classics #1. I don’t know why I’m telling you that I’m buying a Dredd comic since it’s always a given but there you go. Valiant debuts a new series this week about the world’s worst superhero team in Quantum and Woody #1.

Comic Book Pull List for July 3, 2013

what-if-avx-1If you go to your local comic book store tomorrow, expect to see a bunch of new series on the shelves. Smaller publishers like Avatar, Dynamite, Image and Zenscope each have one new series. Marvel has five new series coming out tomorrow. If you’re looking for something new, this is a good week to head to the shop rather than have your file accumulate.

Since there are so many new comics coming out this week, I thought that I’d make each of this week’s picks a new series. DC is building up to the Trinity War by digging into Pandora’s story in Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1. Marvel does a sort of speculative alternate reality miniseries starting with What If: AvX #1 whose title makes me think we might get some more alternate reality stories if this sells well. And this week’s best named new comic is Dark Skullkickers Dark #1 which clearly has twice the darkness of  your standard dark comics.
