Comic Book Pull List for November 13, 2013
This week in learning something new, I learned that there’s still an Injustice comic series. That game came out back in April but DC is still publishing comics based on the game’s story. And here I was thinking that the comic was just a prequel to the game. This week, Injustice gets its own big annual release in Injustice: Gods Among Us Annual #1.
Elsewhere, Marvel has a new comic series to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the X-Men. The iconic comic characters who found renewed popularity in the 90s with an animated cartoon and the 2000s with the film franchise, have been around 50 years. Various iconic writers come together to write a new tale about fan favourites like Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Kitty Pryde and Rogue.
Comic Book Pull List for November 6, 2013
With Halloween come and gone, I guess that I’m done featuring horror comic series at the top of the pull list. I guess we can talk about some of my favourite miniseries right now. First up is The Star Wars #3 which continues the comic book retelling of George Lucas’ original screenplay for Star Wars. Over at DC, the Forever Evil miniseries continues in Forever Evil #3.
As for new series starting this week, the X-Men get a new series beginning in Amazing X-Men #1. And Dynamite launches a new Red Sonja series with Legends of Red Sonja #1.
Comic Book Pull List for October 30, 2013
With Halloween later this week, it’s only appropriate for all the horror comics to hit the shelves at your local comic book shop this week. And if your favourite horror series are from the smaller publishers, you’re in luck. Big Dog Ink has Rex: Zombie Killer #1. Boom! Studios brings you Adventure Time Spoooktacular #1 and Hellraiser Annual #. Ash & the Army of Darkness #1 debuts over at Dynamite. And IDW haunts you with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #12. Wait…
Anyway, the big two have some new series for you. Andy Kubert is back with one of his characters as he explores the origins of Damien Wayne in Damien: Son of Batman #1. Neil Gaiman is back with his Sandman series with the new six-issue miniseries The Sandman: Overture. Over at Marvel, Doc Ock battles Doc Ock in Superior Spider-Man Team Up Special #1. And the miniseries ends here in Deadpool Kills Deadpool #4.
Comic Book Pull List for October 23, 2013
Well, I learned something last week. Apparently, DC Comics completely underestimated the number of 3D covers that would be ordered as part of Villains’ Month. The clerk at my local comic book shop said that they didn’t have enough 3D covers to fill file orders let alone put them on the new release shelves. That wasn’t just the case here but at every other store where he had a contact. Poor planning by DC but it saved me a dollar an issue. Their loss.
Anyway, this week’s picks are all new series making their debut. From the gang at DC is the all-ages (read: for kids) Batman comic called Beware The Batman #1. Meanwhile, the gang at Marvel have gone the comedy route for a new series that brings together all of their heroes in Marvel: Now What #1. And we round out this week’s lighter fare edition of the picks with the comic book adaptation of the Cartoon Network’s Samurai Jack in Samurai Jack #1.
Comic Book Pull List for October 16, 2013
I realized something this week. The first of the Justice League books since the conclusion of Villains Month comes out this week. I thought that I completely missed one of the three series making a return but I was wrong. It all begins again with Justice League of America #8 which ties in with the Forever Evil miniseries and the other fallout from the Trinity War. Speaking of Forever Evil tie-ins, The Flash’s foes, The Rogues, debate their place in the new world in Forever Evil: Rogues Rebellion #1.
In other series that caught my eye, IDW has a new Star Trek series that will go into the history of Khan (KHAAAAAAAAN!) in Star Trek: Khan #1. And if you’re looking for comics that have a bit more of a Halloween vibe, might I recommend X-Files: Season 10 #5 and Dark Horse’s new supernatural series S.H.O.O.T. First #1.
Comic Book Pull List for October 9, 2013
I just realized something as I was writing this week’s pull list post. It’s October. Halloween is in October. Maybe I should promote some horror comics alongside the usual fare when I do the pull list.
So let’s start with The Walking Dead. In addition to The Walking Dead #115 which promises to be the start of the biggest storyline in the series’ history in honour of its tenth anniversary, there’s a special 10th anniversary copy of The Walking Dead #1 which will be printed in full-colour for the first time.
There are three new horror series launching this week. DC and Vertigo are teaming up for the new witchcraft themed comic Coffin Hill #1. IDW has a new miniseries about creatures that feed off of your memories in Memory Collectors #1. And fans of AMC’s Comic Book Men will finally get their hands on the comic pitched last season in the first issue of Cryptozoic Man.
And the big two have interesting issues for you this week. DC launches the much-anticipated Superman and Wonder Woman series with Superman/Wonder Woman #1. Meanwhile, Marvel’s big cross-over event continues in Infinity #4.
Comic Book Pull List for October 2, 2013
Here’s something cool from Dark Horse. They’re starting a #1 for $1 promotion and are starting with Star Wars #1 for only $1. If you missed that issue, and it was easy to considering how popular that issue and series is, you’ll want jump on this deal if you don’t already have a copy. And there’s also The Star Wars #2 for Star Wars fans looking for a new/old comic this week.
Meanwhile, in the DC-verse, Villains Month may be over but that doesn’t mean that things are back to normal. Villains still control the Earth but the Teen Titans are leading the fight back in Forever Evil #2. If you’re looking for something a bit off the beaten path, classic pulp hero The Shadow is getting a series set in modern times with the launch of Shadow Now #1.
Comic Book Pull List for September 25, 2013
So I finally got a chance to see those 3D villains covers that DC has done for Villains Month and they look pretty damn good. So good, in fact, that my local comic book store can’t keep these issues in stock. Even with all the issues coming out this month, they have literally no unsold issues of DC’s villains comics. I’d say that this was a successful promotional event. Give us an update about how these comics are selling at your comic book store by dropping us a line in the comments.
Anyway, time for my comic picks of the week. With DC’s Villain’s Month wrapping up, you can learn about the Secret Society which had been a key part of the first five issues of JLA. However, the Secret Society issue isn’t a JLA title but in Justice League #23.4. Speaking of villain comics, while Thanos is occupying most of the Marvel-verse’s attention, other villains are using the opportunity for a big score in Infinity: Heist #1. If you’re looking for something different, Image has a sex comedy for you with Sex Criminals #1.
Comic Book Pull List for September 18, 2013
This week is a tricky one to give recommendations for because there aren’t a lot of new comics. Most of this week’s notable comics are continuing series with Image and Dark Horse as the only two major publishers launching new series this week. Image has Zero #1 which is about a spy who likes to shoot first and ask questions later. Dark Horse, meanwhile, launches Kiss Me Satan, a new series about supernatural creatures in New Orleans, including the werewolf mafia.
The big two have their universe-wide story arcs continuing this week. Infinity #3 comes out this week which brings us to the halfway point of Marvel’s big six issue summer event.
Over on the DC side of things, Batman and Superman have some villain comics that you might be interested in. This week’s Batman series feature The Penguin in Batman #23.3, The Scarecrow in Detective Comics #23.3 and Ra’s al Ghul in Batman and Robin #23.3. As for Supes, Lex Luthor gets his moment to shine in Action Comics #23.3.
Comic Book Pull List for September 11, 2013
So construction in front of my local comic book shop last week meant they didn’t get last week’s comics on time so I haven’t seen the 3D covers on the DC Comics villain issues but I’ve heard good things about them. I’ve also heard good things about the villains issues themselves so if there’s a villain you like, check this week’s pull list and pay your local comic book store a visit.
This week, Marvel launches a couple of tie-ins with their Infinity miniseries. You have your choice of Infinity Hunt #1 which involves a contest of champions between the various schools of the Marvel-verse and Mighty Avengers #1 which sees a new Avengers team rise up to defend the Earth while the Avengers A-team is off doing their thing with Thanos.
Elsewhere, IDW has my favourite new series of the week. It’s Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #1. Mars Attacks was a great B-movie ( I don’t care what critics think) and I’m a huge Dredd fan so this one is a no-brainer. I’d imagine this one won’t be for everyone. And let’s throw Dark Horse some love for the debut of their new series with Brain Boy #1.
