Comic Book Pull List for June 18, 2014

star-trek-the-city-on-the-edge-of-forever-1There doesn’t seem to be a very long pull list this week. I guess we’re still waiting for the big explosion of big summer storylines to begin at the big two publishers. I’d imagine that we’re just weeks away from that happening. For now, it’s a quiet week.

I do have a couple of recommendations this week. Marvel has the final issue of George Romero’s Empire of the Dead: Act One in issue #5. And over at IDW, they pull a page from Dark Horse’s playbook and bring an original script to print as a comic. While Dark Horse had the original Star Wars script to print, IDW is taking the original screenplay for the legendary Star Trek episode The City on the Edge of Forever in an IDW miniseries of the same name.

Comic Book Pull List for June 11, 2014

eve-true-storiesLet’s take a break from our E3 coverage to talk about more video games! Well, kind of about more video games. Since this week is E3, I thought that it was only appropriate to feature game-based comic books in this week’s pull list. Younger gamers will appreciate IDW’s new series that starts with Angry Birds Comics #1. Older fans can jump into an ongoing series in Sonic the Hedgehog #261. And MMO fans can check out a hardcover collection of stories about the fall of the Band of Brothers alliance in EVE: True Stories.

I also have a few new comics for regular pull list readers. The gang at Marvel have a spin-off of Original Sin with Original Sins #1. No points for the title. Justice League United #2 gets featured here just because it has a Justice League Canada variant cover which will always earn points with me. And the Rocky and Bullwinkle miniseries ends in Rocky and Bullwinkle #4.

Comic Book Pull List for June 4, 2014

batman-66-meets-the-green-hornet-1This week, there’s only one comic that matters for me this week. Kevin Smith’s The Green Hornet series crosses over with DC Comics’ Batman ’66 series in a moment that should bring back memories of the original TV series. Back in 1967, The Green Hornet and Kato joined forces with Batman and Robin in one of the original TV crossovers. This week, it happens again as the four crimefighters reunite in Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #1.

Elsewhere, Boom adapts the cult hit Big Trouble in Little China for print complete with input from director John Carpenter for Big Trouble in Little China #1. And Judge Dredd completes his five-issue west coast adventure in Judge Dredd: Mega City Two #5.

Comic Book Pull List for May 28, 2014

the-star-wars-8Well, I don’t know about you but I’m excited for tomorrow. No, it’s not because it’s my birthday. It’s really not. I’m still in my mid-20s and my hair is starting to go grey. Just little bits on the sides for now but if I keep working myself so hard IRL, it’ll be completely grey. Beats going bald by 30 like my old man, though.

For me this week, it’s only appropriate that The Star Wars, the comic series based on George Lucas’ original draft of the iconic film and franchise, comes to an end this week. I’ve been loving this alternate take on the series since it started though that doesn’t mean that I’m not happy with how the original trilogy turned out in the end. Now, if we could all forget about those damned prequels… Except for III. That one was good.

Comic Book Pull List for May 21, 2014

forever-evil-7This week, the DC Comics universe begins again. After many weeks of delays, the Forever Evil saga comes to an end. Old storylines end (or maybe they die) and new ones rise in their wake. So if you’re a DC fan, you have three comics to choose from. The big DC-verse-wide event comes to and end as Lex Luthor’s Injustice League does battle with Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate in Forever Evil #7. The fallout from that continues in a new storyline in Justice League #30. And the JLA series comes to an end in Justice League of America #14 but who will survive.

Elsewhere in the comic book world, Marvel’s 2014 universe event continues in Original Sin #2. Just because they’re losing the Star Wars license doesn’t mean that Dark Horse isn’t pushing out new Star Wars series. New this week is Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #1. And Dynamite has a new series featuring pulp hero The Shadow in the Cold War called The Shadow: Midnight in Moscow #1.

Comic Book Pull List for May 14, 2014

justice-league-united-1Normally, I don’t struggle finding recommendations for the pull list but it seems as though options are a little slim this week. That might be because everyone is releasing everything next week, including Forever Evil wrapping up.

I do have a few recommendations for this week in the meantime. Before Forever Evil ends, DC is already launching the next Justice League series to replace JLA. It’s the Justice League United #1 which opens up proceeding in Canada which automatically means that it’s awesome. Failing that, you can always try the Superman vs. Doomsday one-shot Superman: Doomed #1. And over at Marvel, they get into the world of organized crime in United States of Murder Inc. #1.

Comic Book Pull List for May 7, 2014

new-52-futures-end-1I read something the other day that said Stan Lee would much prefer that the world spells comic book as comicbook. He sees “comic book” as a funny book where comicbook means what he is iconic for writing. I don’t think he’s going to win that battle any time soon but at least people spell Spider-Man with the hyphen now, right?

Anyway, on to this week’s picks. Over at Marvel, we have our second straight Spider-Man debut on the pull list. This time, it’s a new man in the spider suit. It’s the debut (re-debut?) of Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1. DC Comics carries on with life without Forever Evil in an unconcluded Forever Evil universe as the Earth faces destruction and Batman Beyond is the only one who can help in New 52: Future’s End #1. Finally, Dynamite marks its 10th anniversary and Chaos’ 20th anniversary by relaunching Chaos in Chaos #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 30, 2014

the-amazing-spider-man-1You know what happens when you fall behind on your comic reading? Marvel ends the series that you were reading and quickly starts a new one from that series’ conclusion before you had a chance to pick up Superior Spider-Man #30 from the comic book shop. The long and short of that rant is that Peter Parker is back in The Amazing Spider-Man #1.

Meanwhile, over at DC Comics, they give us a one-shot called Forever Evil Aftermath: Batman vs. Bane #1. There’s just one problem with that: Forever Evil isn’t done yet. You can’t have an aftermath if you don’t actually finish the story. The whole of DC’s release line-up this week is thin so I’m guessing that they were really caught off-guard by the delay of Forever Evil #7.

Elsewhere, just because Star Wars is going to Marvel doesn’t mean that Dark Horse isn’t going to start a new miniseries with the four-issue Star Wars: Rebel Heist starring Han Solo. Finally, Image brings best-selling supernatural horror novelist Jonathan Maberry to comic in V-Wars #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 23, 2014

secret-origins-1I’ve got lots of interesting looking comics to go over at the top of this week’s pull list so let’s get right to the previews.

Marvel is setting up their big summer story with Original Sin #0. They’re also continuing to reboot old heroes and villans into their own series. This week, it’s Elektra #1 and hopefully it’s not so bad that Daredevil and Elektra are erased from Marvel history like they did after the movies.

Over at DC, they launch a new series about the origin stories of heroes in their New 52 universe with Secret Origins #1. And the delay of Forever Evil #7 and the publishing schedule over at DC is starting to screw things up. This week, they debut a new post-Forever Evil series before Forever Evil ends. Spoilers? Anyway, it’s a new Justice League series that includes some Canadian superheroes which means it’s a must-buy. It’s Justice League United #0.

Meanwhile, the mid-sized publishers also have some interesting comic this week too. This week’s The Walking Dead #126 from Image Comics promises to change everything. If it means that it’ll make the TV show worth watching again, I’m all for it. With Jack Bauer about to resume saving America, we find out what he’s been up to between seasons/series of 24 in 24 #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 16, 2014

translucid-1This is the sort of week where I can use the distraction provided by comic books. The return of winter after a couple of weeks that saw the snowbanks drop a good four feet is just depressing. Why I haven’t just skipped the country and gone somewhere warmer, like Siberia, is beyond me.

Anyway, let’s start this week’s recommendations with Boom Studios. I don’t give Boom enough love but I will for their latest series that examines what drives someone to be a superhero and what it means to be a hero in Translucid #1. The big two have two new series with familiar faces. After concluding the Indestructible Hulk series by revealing that the Hulk is not, in fact, indestructible, the Hulk is back in Hulk #1. On the DC side of things, they continue their villains kick with a new series beginning with Sinestro #1.
