Comic Book Pull List for August 27, 2014

wolverine-12The theme of this week’s Comic Book Pull List is series finales. Three of the big publishers have series wrapping up this week. The biggest is Marvel who will end their current Wolverine series to carry on with the Death of Wolverine storyline with this week’s Wolverine #12. Jonah Hex’s series comes to an end in All-Star Western #34. And the final Star Wars comic rolls off the printing presses at Dark Horse in Star Wars: Legacy #18.

And just to balance things out, we have a series debut to recommend too. One of my favourite cartoons, Bob’s Burgers, gets its first comic book series starting in Bob’s Burgers #1.

Comic Book Pull List for August 20, 2014

dark-horse-presents-1This week, I think we should look at some anthologies in the pull list recommendations this week. Dark Horse brings you a multitude of stories in each issue of their revived Dark Horse Presents anthology series. Alternatively, DC and Marvel are doing various characters and stories in a series rather than in an issue. DC launches Multiversity which will at characters and stories across the DC multiverse. And Marvel wraps up the Original Sins series in Original Sins #5.

Comic Book Pull List for August 13, 2014

star-wars-20With Disney buying Lucasfilm, everything Star Wars that isn’t under the Disney umbrella is coming to an end. This week, the Star Wars comic series that’s set between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back is ending its run in Star Wars #20. Hopefully Marvel gives us some good Star Wars comics before too long and not all just Episode VII tie-ins either.

IDW has a few new miniseries this week but the one I’m looking forward to is Judge Dredd: Anderson, Psi-Division which takes a look at Dredd sidekick Anderson’s early days in Psi-Division in a four-issue miniseries. Alternatively, part two of the Q storyline brings us to an alternative timeline Deep Space Nine to see what happens to Ben Sisko in a rebooted Star Trek universe in Star Trek #36. And just to keep dancing around the big two with my recommendations, The Walking Dead #130 is out this week too.

Comic Book Pull List for August 6, 2014

superior-spider-man-32Here’s an interesting question: How does a comic series end and then come back after a short hiatus? Marvel tries to answer that question in Superior Spider-Man #32. They also smartly schedule their line-up to cash in on the blockbuster release of Guardians of the Galaxy with Legendary Star Lord #2 and Rocket Racoon #2.

Meanwhile, over at Valiant, fans of the Harbinger series gets a short miniseries that rises from the ashes of its predecessor in Harbinger: Omegas #1. A man must choose between the love of his life and duty to his people in Image’s Imperial #1. And if a kids comic is more your speed, Adventure Time writer Rebecca Sugar is behind Boom’s new Steven Universe series. No idea why that title would catch my eye…

Comic Book Pull List for July 30, 2014

george-rr-martin-in-the-house-of-the-worm-1I don’t know how often I accomplish it but I like to start these Comic Book Pull List posts with a look at some of the new and odd offerings that comic book publishers have each week. For example, we know that Dynamite is adapting A Game of Thrones into a comic series. Now, Avatar has another George R.R. Martin book coming to coloured ink with In The House Of The Worm #1.

Over at Vertigo / DC Comics, they have a horror slash murder mystery miniseries that covers four murders in four time periods from the 1890s to 2050s. If that’s not your speed, you can always read about a “homicidal cybernetic kung fu rooster” in Chew: Warrior Chicken Poyo #1.

Comic Book Pull List for July 23, 2014

transformers-vs-gi-joe-1There are a lot of new franchises this week for your perusal. Marvel continues to roll out new single-character focused series with the debut of Storm #1. For 90s nostalgia, there’s Super Secret Crisis War: Johnny Bravo #1. And for 80s crossover action figure nostalgia, you have to take a look at Transformers vs. G.I. Joe #1.

On the sci-fi franchise front, Titan takes over the Doctor Who franchise with new adventures of 10 and 11 in Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #1 and Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #1. And if Mass Effect fans want to keep giving money to Mac Walters, allegedly one of the two writers of ME3’s ending, the finale of the Mass Effect: Foundation series takes us right into the Citadel DLC with a tale about Maya Brooks in Mass Effect: Foundation #13.

Comic Book Pull List for July 16, 2014

infinite-crisis-1DC Comics found the comic book adaptation of the video game Injustice to be such a success that they’re doing it again. Their MOBA (I’m talking about those a lot this week) Infinite Crisis is getting a comic adaptation with Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse. If video games aren’t your speed, DC also reboots Teen Titans this week and sends Harley Quinn to SDCC.

Elsewhere, Dark Horse wraps up their miniseries of The Witcher in The Witcher #5. If only the game wasn’t delayed, this would have been pretty well-timed. A special one-shot by Dynamite reveal some of the origins of Lamont Cranston in The Shadow #0. And Marvel continues their hypothetical look at the future with 100th Anniversary Special: X-Men #1.

And Archie dies this week. Or maybe I should say that one Archie dies seeing as he’s being published in multiple timelines simultaneously from how that AP article put it. If you want to see an Archie die, pick up Life With Archie #36.

Comic Book Pull List for July 9, 2014

star-trek-35I’m a little behind on my Spider-Man comics so these previews of this week’s new Spider-Man issues might be completely out of date. Much like the Fantastic Four last week, Spider-Man gets his own speculative future issue. This week, the Spider-Man of 2061 stars in 100th Anniversary Special: Spider-Man #1. And straight from the pages of Superior Spider-Man, it’s the return of the Spider-Man of 2099 in Spider-Man 2099 #1.

Elsewhere, Dick Grayson gets a new adventure and his own comic following his adventures in Forever Evil in Grayson #1. And the rebooted Star Trek dips into another classic Star Trek storyline. Q is back! Who knows what he’ll be up to now that he has a whole new timeline to meddle with over the course of six issues starting in Star Trek #35.

100th-anniversary-fantastic-four-1After taking Canada Day off because I’m Canadian and it’s a statutory holiday, it’s time to give you this week’s comic book releases just in time for your local comic book shop to open today.

This week seems to be tie-in week at the major publishers. With the new movie coming out soon, Marvel is pushing Guardians of the Galaxy hard. This week sees the launch of two new series, Guardians of the Galaxy: Most Wanted and Rocket Raccoon. We recently previewed a tie-in with the Robocop reboot but the original Robocop continues in Boom’s Robocop #1. And IDW’s Dexter’s Lab miniseries comes to an end in Dexter’s Laboratory #4.

If tie-ins aren’t your thing, the crossover event of the century continues in Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #2. And Marvel is doing some odd 100th anniversary thing with the Fantastic Four. Marvel has only been around 75 years and Fantastic Four 53 but that doesn’t mean that Marvel can’t fast-forward to 2061 to look at the future of the Fantastic Four in the 100th Anniversary Special – Fantastic Four #1.

Comic Book Pull List for June 25, 2014

wolverine-9I figure I should probably start this week’s pull list with the cash grabbiest of titles. Okay, some of you are probably interested but the hype Marvel is trying to push on this and the fact that comic book characters never stay dead (Hi, Peter Parker) make me very cynical about it. Anyway, this week’s Wolverine #9 starts the Death of Wolverine storyline so Wolverine fans might be just a little interested in it.

The other big comic industry story of the week is the debut of John Romita Jr. over at DC Comics as the new artist on the Superman series. DC Creative boss Geoff Johns also joins the series giving Romita the A-list treatment that Johns previously gave Ivan Reis and Joe Prado at the launch of The New 52. Romita’s debut comes in Superman #32.
