The Walking Dead’s Getting a Spin-Off
AMC’s got a fever and the only cure is more spin-offs. Looking for new high-quality, and highly viewed, programming led to AMC ordering the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul. Now, AMC is going to another of their big series for a new show. This time, they’re working on a new spin-off series for The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead’s Ratings Bubble is Going to Burst
The Walking Dead is the highest-rated series on all of television, not just cable, in the critical 18-49 demographic. It’s doing AMC’s best viewership numbers ever, even better than award-winning shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad. However, the third season finale is going to leave a bad taste in people’s mouths and AMC is at risk of seeing many viewers tune out.
First, the numbers. The finale got a total of 12.4 million viewers overall and 8.1 million in the 18-49 demo. That brought the season’s average in the 18-49 demo to the highest in television this season. Hell, the Talking Dead after show (a wasteland of utter crap since switching to 60 minutes) managed to pull more 800,000 more viewers for its first airing than Game of Thrones’ first airing on HBO (5.2 million to 4.4 million). Basically, AMC is swimming in money from everything The Walking Dead.
Now, to say that The Walking Dead’s ratings aren’t sustainable isn’t exactly a bold prediction. What goes up must come down, right? However, I have more reasons than that.

Building (Critical) Consensus: The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
I warned you about The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct back in January. That footage that Terminal Reality gave IGN at the end of December wasn’t going to get any better by a March release date. And if you followed me on Twitter, I gave you advance warning that Activision and Terminal Reality weren’t taking review copy requests for the game.
The problem isn’t solely with the graphics and animations though. The levels are repetitive The survivor group management mechanics are effectively pointless. Basically, every review about this game says that TWD: Survival Instinct is little more than a cash grab using a popular license.

Should We Be Worried About The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct?
When Telltale Games first released 2012’s The Walking Dead, I don’t think anyone was expecting the GOTY-worthy game that they produced given their earlier efforts. It easily set the bar for story writing in video games. Naturally, you could understand why we would keep a close eye on Terminal Reality’s take on The Walking Dead TV series. The game, called The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, is a first-person shooter starring TV series characters Daryl and Merle Dixon.
While previews of the game’s plot and gameplay seem promising, the first gameplay footage has me worried that this is another publisher (Activision) trying to cash in on a hot license and the result will be another terrible TV licensed game. Read the rest of this entry
