Comic Book Pull List for May 15, 2013

battlestar-galactica-1I feel bad saying that this week is a relatively quiet week but I’m not seeing too much on this week’s list that I’m particularly interested in. That’s not to say that there aren’t some good comics this week.

My picks for the week include the comic book revival of Battlestar Galactica. For the 35th anniversary of the classic show, the series gets its own comic book starting with Battlestar Galactica #1. Captain Marvel gets her own big story in Avengers Enemy Within #1 that’s a cross-over between her and The Avengers. Since I’m trying to get some of the better efforts from the big guys in these posts, let’s remind you that Wonder Woman #20 is coming out this week after a pretty good #19 last month.

Comic Book Pull List for May 8, 2013

x-01I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I missed Free Comic Book day this weekend. I was a bit busy with things around the house. Some of that will be revealed in the near future by which I mean hopefully by the end of the month.

In the meantime, here are my picks for the week. Dark Horse brings back X for a miniseries. The masked vigilante had a 25 issue run back in the mid-90s and gets a four issue run over the summer. The Justice League of America is back this month with Justice League of America #3. Apparently, we’re getting another JLA in two weeks and one each in June and July. Plan your buying accordingly. And to mix things up with my last pick, go grab a copy of Deadpool #9. Why not? It’s Deadpool.

Comic Book Pull List for May 1, 2013

the-black-bat-01This week, I’ve tried to pick from a different batch of publishers than I usually do. Only one of this week’s comic picks of the week are from the big four publishers. That would be Hawkeye #10. The new Hawkeye series is critically acclaimed and nominated for scads of awards. Now’s probably as good a time as any to get into one of the best comics on shelves today.

From slightly smaller publishers, we go to Dynamite and Valiant. This week, Dynamite relaunches classic 1930s pulp magazine character The Black Bat in Black Bat #1. Over at Valiant, Shadowman gets a prequel comic to his current series that launched last November with Shadowman #0.

Comic Book Pull List for April 24, 2013

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-21Another week brings us more new releases at your local comic book store or equivalent establishment where comic books are sold. Apparently, my hometown also has a skateboard/vinyl record/comic book shop in the opposite end of town. That would be classified under “equivalent establishment where comic books are sold.”

Right, this week, I’ve got a Marvel pick in my top three. Marvel promises a visually stunning comic in tomorrow’s A+X #7. I know comic books aren’t about the visuals but great art is still pretty damn cool. The Flash gets called in to help JLD in this week’s Justice League Dark #19. TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman is back to draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #21. As Michael Bay takes the movie into scare territory for long-time Turtles fans, at least the comics are trying to stick to what we knew and loved.

Comic Book Pull List for April 17, 2013

justice-league-19Since I like telling stories to make these comic book pull list post less listy, here’s one for this week. I’ve gone to the local comic book emporium enough that they offered me my own file. See, you don’t have to namedrop yourself as an occasionally read internet blogger to get a file at your neighbourhood comic book shop.

Right, time for the quick hits of the week. Superman and kryptonite makes this week’s Justice League #19 one of my must reads. Okay, that and the release of Injustice today has me hyped about all things DC/Justice League. In Judge Dredd #6, technology has gone rogue in Mega City One which leaves Dredd stuck without a weapon or backup against a large gang of thugs. And who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows. Hahahaha! I mean, The Shadow: Year One #2 is out today, too.

Is Dredd 3D Getting a Comic Book Sequel?

I’ve not exactly made a secret of the fact that I’m a Judge Dredd fan. That’s thanks in large part to the great Dredd movie of 2012. I honestly think that Dredd (3D) was every bit as good as The Dark Knight Rises. Since then, I’ve become a regular reader of IDW’s Judge Dredd comic.

Now, 2000AD has sent out an image that teases some sort of Dredd sequel based on the 2012 movie. It’s likely another comic book series but we can always hope that it’s a new movie.

Superman vs. Batman: Who Wins?

Ahead of next week’s release of the DC Comics fighting game Injustice, Jackie and I have been debating who would win in the ultimate fight between Batman and Superman. No other pair of battling superheroes can stir up the same debate that these two can, even the whole lot of Marvel heroes.

Yesterday, we made our cases for our superhero of choice. As a long time fan, Jackie said that Batman beats Superman. Being a fan since childhood, I said that Superman would beat the Bat. Now, it’s your turn to tell us which superhero would win the ultimate fight.

Superman vs. Batman: Why Superman Wins

batman-vs-supermanIn the run up to the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us next week, we’re looking ahead to the game by answering the ultimate question. It’s not life, the universe and everything. It’s who would win in a fight between Superman and Batman. Today, Steve looks at why Superman would win.

Superman wins because he’s freaking Superman! That’s it. Mic drop…

Okay, you want an actual answer? Well, Superman is very appropriately named because he is the most super of all superheroes. He can fly, he has x-ray vision, he has super hearing and vision (not just x-ray vision), he can shoot solar energy from his eyes and is almost completely invulnerable.

There is only one way that you can hurt Superman and there lies the only possible way that Batman can beat Superman.

Superman vs. Batman: Why Batman Wins

batman rulesIn anticipation of the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us, Steve and Jackie are tackling the ultimate question as we look forward to the game’s release. Today, we would look at who would win the fight between Superman and Batman. While Steve chose to back the dude in the red cape and tight blue spandex, Jackie looks at why Batman would win.

So why would Batman win you ask? Well he’s the freakin’ Dark Knight! He’s badass! He’s the Batman! That’s right. Crushed it.

Sure, Batman doesn’t have the superhuman abilities like Superman. He can’t fly. He ain’t got no super hearing. He certainly doesn’t have x-ray vision. He can’t shoot solar energy from his eyes, but at least he ain’t afraid of Kryptonite! Read the rest of this entry

Comic Book Pull List for April 10, 2013

aliens-vs-parker-2This is our third go at the weekly comic book release list and I think I’m starting to get the hang of picking cool comics for the week.

This week, my must buy is Star Wars #4 which continues to fill in the blank between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. It’s a pretty good series so far and I’m looking forward to this week’s issue. If you like loving genre parodies like Galaxy Quest and Shaun of the Dead, you should pick up Aliens vs. Parker #2. And in this week’s Superboy #19, we learn more about his secret origin. I’d probably get Action Comics #19, myself, before this because I’m a Superman sort of guy but this would be interesting if you’re into superhero lore.
