There Are No Daily or Flash Sales During the Fall and Winter Steam Sales

steam-sale-wallpaperThe 2015 edition of the Steam Fall/Thanksgiving/Black Friday sale is just underway. For gamers, it’s kind of like early Christmas. You can get deep discounts on those games that you wanted to buy at $60 but held off knowing that this day would come.

There will be a change for this year’s fall and winter sales that you might have already noticed. Last week, Valve sent notice to publishers that there would be no daily deals or flash sales during the sale. Instead, the discount they set will be fixed for the duration of the sale.

In previous Steam Sales, we’ve seen a regular discount that would last the whole of a sale and deeper discounts for games featured as part of the 48-hour Daily Deals and the 8 to 24-hour flash sales. For the next two big Steam Sales, publishers will only be setting one discount rate rather than the usual two.

In a notice to Steam publishers obtained by Shacknews, Valve told publishers: “In past sale events, we’ve asked for two discounts—a duration discount that runs for the length of the sale, and a feature discount that runs in the event that a game is featured on the front page. This year, to optimize the sale for customers and to allow us to feature and recommend your products in more ways to more customers, we’re asking for just one discount, to run the length of the sale.”

This does change a little bit of the fun of a Steam Sale. Half the fun was waiting to see what would be the big discounts of the day or half/third-day are. It makes budgeting a little easier since you know how much you’re going to pay to clear your wishlist at any given time. It also means that you can compare Steam’s deals to the likes of Origin, Amazon and GMG without having to consider that bigger discount that could be over the horizon.

The big question is how deep with the discounts go. A lot of games had the nominal 10% to 33% discount before hitting that 50% or more discount when they had a featured deal. We’ll have to do some digging to see which end of the spectrum the big games land.

The Steam Autumn Sale started November 25th at 1:00 PM EST and will run to that same time on Tuesday, December 1st.
