Remember Firefly Universe Online, the Fox authorized MMO based in the Firefly Universe? That’s not what’s coming in 2014. Instead, Fox announced at Comic Con that Firefly would be coming to the video game verse with Firefly Online.

It’s not a full blown MMO, however. It’s called a “social online role-playing game” that is going to be published for iOS and Android devices. Yes, we’re getting a Firefly mobile game. Is it just me or does every force in the verse work against us?

The game will be developed by QMx and Spark Plug Games and will feature cross-platform play between iOS and Android devices.

Firefly Online will see you in the role of a captain of a ship who must recruit a crew and complete missions. You’ll also encounter other boats and can trade with other captains.

As for DarkCryo and Firefly Universe Online, it doesn’t look like the project is continuing. There is a short statement on the front of their website saying that their agreement with Fox included a clause that they wouldn’t compete with another Firefly game.

So it looks like the tale of FUO ended before it ever really took off. What an odd coincidence considering the source material.
