Building (Critical) Consensus: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (iOS)

xcom-enemy-unknown-ios-iconI thought that I wouldn’t have to do a review roundup for the iOS port of 2012 hit XCOM: Enemy Unknown but it turns out that it was pretty spectacular, especially when compared to the standard iOS gaming fare. Maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance that iOS devices can be used for serious gaming rather than just endless runners and Angry Birds.

Slide to Play (100%): There’s a lot of game here for your money, even at the $19.99 price tag. The PC version is still selling around $40 and is worth it even at that price.

AppSpy (100%): This is no companion app – XCOM iOS is the real deal. Apart from some derezzed visuals and a slightly smaller map count, what you’re looking at is the complete XCOM experience in portable, touchscreen form.

Arcade Sushi (95%): If you’ve played the original X-Com: Enemy Unknown, you know what to expect, because somehow that awesome experience has been shrunk down and encapsulated for a portable audience. If you haven’t played it yet, stop reading this review and just buy it already! It’s the most fun you can have slaughtering aliens.

Destructoid (90%): XCOM: Enemy Unknown has translated incredibly well to the iOS platform as whole. While there’s no way I can recommend it over the PC, 360, or PS3 versions of the game, it still holds its own. If you haven’t experienced this modern classic yet and have absolutely no other way to play it, this port is where it’s at.

IGN (85%): Even without the multiplayer or DLC features, it offers more depth than you’ll find in most, if not all, other strategy titles in the App store. There’s more than enough game here to justify the space the game will take up in your budget and your iPad memory.
