Game Trailers Roundup for April 21, 2015
A day late but certainly not a trailer short, it’s time for this week’s roundup of the noteworthy video game trailers for the week.
This week, I’ve rounded up ten trailers for you to watch. There are your little indie releases. Blizzard has a couple of release trailers for Hearthstone on phones and Heroes of the Storm’s open beta and full release. Oh, and there’s a trailer for a little game called Star Wars: Battlefront.
Game Trailers Roundup for April 13, 2015
Since the blog is back, so is one of our post popular regular featured. It’s time to look at some of the trailers from the last week in the Game Trailers Roundup.
This week, it’s all big games with five trailers. Mortal Kombat X’s launch trailer leads us off but we also have announcement trailers for the new Deus Ex and Lego games, an accolades trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles on 3DS and a new one for The Witcher 3.
Game of Thrones – Episode Two Review: Love’s Labour’s Lost
It took a long time but it looks like Telltale Games finally found its strong suit with The Walking Dead series. That story kicked off their foray into mature stories, strong characters and meaningful interaction. The gameplay around it wasn’t the emphasis but rather a means to get you to the next character moment.
While Telltale’s new Game of Thrones series didn’t debut at the peak of TWD’s excellence, they did a great job with the talking portions of the game. The memorable moments in the first episode came from the interactions of the two Forrester children who were talkers rather than fighters. The second episode of Game of Thrones has a little less conversation and a little more action but that doesn’t make it any less satisfying.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris Review: The Mummy Returns
As I finished up writing this review, I had to change the posting date of it. It read February 25th, 2015. I’ve had this review waiting to be written for a month-and-a-half. It’s hard to motivate yourself to write a review for a game that does so little to motivate you to play it. Basically, this game is the game that nearly ended et geekera. I had to overcome the challenge and finish the review but I couldn’t will myself to do it.
There are great games. There are terrible games. The worst thing that a game could be is perfectly average. Nothing particularly good. Nothing particularly bad. The only thing that it’s great at is making you go “That was a game.”
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is the “sequel” to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, a game that is very well-regarded by gamers and critics. LCTOO is just a game. Nothing more, nothing less.
From Failure to Record-Breaker: Tomb Raider Racks Up Franchise Record 8.5 Million Copies Sold
I want you to flashback to March 2013. I know it seems like forever ago. I didn’t have any grey hair then so it’s longer for me.
In an investor call at the end of the month, Square Enix effectively called the Tomb Raider reboot that had been out for all of three weeks a failure. They said that they had expected the game to ship between five and six million copies and only it moved 3.4 million. Square Enix made it sound like the Tomb Raider franchise was dead on re-arrival.
Over the following 24 months, Tomb Raider and the current-gen (PS4 and XB1) Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition sold another 5.1 million copies to bring the total units sold to a franchise record of 8.5 million copies sold. They’re touting the success of the Tomb Raider reboot in the run up to this fall’s release of The Rise of the Tomb Raider (a timed exclusive on Xbox One and Xbox 360).
So what happened for Square Enix to change their tune?
Game Trailers Roundup for March 10, 2015
At some point in time in the not too distant future, I might get time to start writing again. A while back, I remember seeing a post on /r/games_journalism asking why a bunch of small sites don’t combine forces. I’m starting to think that isn’t such a bad idea.
Anyway, let’s start off your Tuesday with a plethora of video game trailers for you to watch. The usual March lineup of games isn’t as strong as they have been in past years. Of note, there’s Battlefield Hardline and… I’ll get back to you. Along with that, there are a total of eight trailers for you to watch. Not a bad way to start your day.
Game Trailers Roundup for March 3, 2015
I know things have been quiet around here lately but I have a few posts in the works. I might even be able to finish those reviews, news and columns if I can get a bit of time to get some writing in. I’m so busy IRL that I completely didn’t notice that I didn’t schedule this post to go up yesterday. I don’t know how I managed that.
Anyway, if it’s a new week, then it’s time for us to look at recently released video game trailers. There are eight trailers this week with most of them being for the triplest of triple-A games including three from WB Interactive and two from popular JRPG franchises. Yes, this is the sort of post that makes this series worth it.
Game Trailers Roundup for February 23, 2015
Another week, another roundup of all the latest trailers for upcoming games. We have a few launch trailers, including trailers for Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Dragon Ball: Xenoverse and Frozen Cortex (review coming soon). We also have a few teaser trailers for some upcoming triple-As if that’s more your speed.
Turtle Rocks Wants to Remind You that People are Playing Evolve with This Infographic
It’s been almost two weeks since Evolve, the 2014 Best of E3 and so far unlikely to be 2015 Game of the Year, hit shelves and already I’ve seen a few people online mention that they’re already having long waits to get into games on PC. So when Turtle Rock and 2K came out with a “by the numbers” look back at the first week of Evolve, it serves as a bit of a reminder that the game is out now that the hype has died down.
There are few interesting tidbits of information from this infographic. While the battle between the Hunters and Monsters is pretty balanced overall, Turtle Rock’s statistics back up my beta Impressions claim about the early game vs. late game battle. The Monster loses some 89% of games settled in Stage 1 but wins 77% of games that reach Stage 3. It also notes that almost six million 4v1 games were played in the first seven days since release.
For this and more information about Evolve, we have a handy infographic.
ClusterPuck 99 Review: Drop The Puck
If there’s one complaint that I have as a primarily PC gamer, it’s that there aren’t many sports games on the PC. Sure, there’s FIFA and NBA 2K but there’s no Madden, no MLB (okay, it’s basically PlayStation exclusive but you know what I’m getting at) and no NHL. That last one’s really burning me because I willingly played those NHL game re-skins that EA was putting out for PC from NHL 07 to NHL 09. And, no, eSports doesn’t count because the vs. AI modes of MOBAs and CS:GO aren’t particularly fun and the AI kicks my ass repeatedly at SC2.
And that brings me to ClusterPuck 99. With sports games lacking on PC and licenses for pro sports costing an obscene amount of money, devs have to be creative with sports games. And that’s exactly what PHL Collective have done with ClusterPuck 99. They’ve taken the important parts of hockey and soccer and distilled it down to the essential experience. Then they went mental and added spikes and turbo pads and death. You know, the important part of sport.
