Comic Book Pull List for May 7, 2014

new-52-futures-end-1I read something the other day that said Stan Lee would much prefer that the world spells comic book as comicbook. He sees “comic book” as a funny book where comicbook means what he is iconic for writing. I don’t think he’s going to win that battle any time soon but at least people spell Spider-Man with the hyphen now, right?

Anyway, on to this week’s picks. Over at Marvel, we have our second straight Spider-Man debut on the pull list. This time, it’s a new man in the spider suit. It’s the debut (re-debut?) of Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1. DC Comics carries on with life without Forever Evil in an unconcluded Forever Evil universe as the Earth faces destruction and Batman Beyond is the only one who can help in New 52: Future’s End #1. Finally, Dynamite marks its 10th anniversary and Chaos’ 20th anniversary by relaunching Chaos in Chaos #1.

Marvel to Kill Wolverine in an Upcoming Miniseries

the-death-of-wolverine-headerMarvel has decided that now is the time to make a big splash in the comic book business by killing off a major character. This might be the biggest death that Marvel has tried as they have announced that this fall will be The Death of Wolverine.

Comic Book Pull List for April 30, 2014

the-amazing-spider-man-1You know what happens when you fall behind on your comic reading? Marvel ends the series that you were reading and quickly starts a new one from that series’ conclusion before you had a chance to pick up Superior Spider-Man #30 from the comic book shop. The long and short of that rant is that Peter Parker is back in The Amazing Spider-Man #1.

Meanwhile, over at DC Comics, they give us a one-shot called Forever Evil Aftermath: Batman vs. Bane #1. There’s just one problem with that: Forever Evil isn’t done yet. You can’t have an aftermath if you don’t actually finish the story. The whole of DC’s release line-up this week is thin so I’m guessing that they were really caught off-guard by the delay of Forever Evil #7.

Elsewhere, just because Star Wars is going to Marvel doesn’t mean that Dark Horse isn’t going to start a new miniseries with the four-issue Star Wars: Rebel Heist starring Han Solo. Finally, Image brings best-selling supernatural horror novelist Jonathan Maberry to comic in V-Wars #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 23, 2014

secret-origins-1I’ve got lots of interesting looking comics to go over at the top of this week’s pull list so let’s get right to the previews.

Marvel is setting up their big summer story with Original Sin #0. They’re also continuing to reboot old heroes and villans into their own series. This week, it’s Elektra #1 and hopefully it’s not so bad that Daredevil and Elektra are erased from Marvel history like they did after the movies.

Over at DC, they launch a new series about the origin stories of heroes in their New 52 universe with Secret Origins #1. And the delay of Forever Evil #7 and the publishing schedule over at DC is starting to screw things up. This week, they debut a new post-Forever Evil series before Forever Evil ends. Spoilers? Anyway, it’s a new Justice League series that includes some Canadian superheroes which means it’s a must-buy. It’s Justice League United #0.

Meanwhile, the mid-sized publishers also have some interesting comic this week too. This week’s The Walking Dead #126 from Image Comics promises to change everything. If it means that it’ll make the TV show worth watching again, I’m all for it. With Jack Bauer about to resume saving America, we find out what he’s been up to between seasons/series of 24 in 24 #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 16, 2014

translucid-1This is the sort of week where I can use the distraction provided by comic books. The return of winter after a couple of weeks that saw the snowbanks drop a good four feet is just depressing. Why I haven’t just skipped the country and gone somewhere warmer, like Siberia, is beyond me.

Anyway, let’s start this week’s recommendations with Boom Studios. I don’t give Boom enough love but I will for their latest series that examines what drives someone to be a superhero and what it means to be a hero in Translucid #1. The big two have two new series with familiar faces. After concluding the Indestructible Hulk series by revealing that the Hulk is not, in fact, indestructible, the Hulk is back in Hulk #1. On the DC side of things, they continue their villains kick with a new series beginning with Sinestro #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 9, 2014

flash-gordon-1Guess who’s back? It’s Flash Gordon! The classic hero is back with a new series in Flash Gordon #1. It’s funny because I hadn’t heard the name Flash Gordon until I got my driver’s licence renewed. The woman at the counter tells me not to smile for the picture and says, “Look straight ahead, directly at the flash… Gordon.” Well, I barely get through the picture before cracking up. She very nearly cost me the time of taking another picture. See, not all people working those jobs have had their souls sucked out.

Over at Marvel, they celebrate the 50th anniversary of Daredevil by celebrating Matt Murdoch’s 50th birthday in the standalone Daredevil #1.50. And Batman gets a new Scott Snyder penned series that will consist of 60 issues and run weekly for at least the next twelve weeks. Brace your wallets for Batman Eternal #1.

Comic Book Pull List for April 2, 2014

aquaman-and-the-others-1Without that issue of Forever Evil #7 that I was looking forward to this week and no Justice League on the horizon, that DC Comics section of the pull list looks awfully bare. However, DC Comics superstars Ivan Reis and Joe Prado (who are lovely people should you ever get the chance to meet them) are back on the Aquaman beat with Aquaman and the Others #1.

Over at Marvel, they’re doing another hypothetical alternate reality miniseries. This time, it’s about the Age of Ultron storyline. What if Hank Pym was able to create an even more dangerous version of Ultron? We find out in What If: Age of Ultron #1. And Dark Horse continues to do their Joss Whedon TV series continuations with Angel and Faith: Season Ten #1.

Don’t Expect Forever Evil #7 Until May

forever-evil-7-headerWe’re you looking forward to the final chapter of DC’s big universe-wide Forever Evil event in the eponymous miniseries? Well, you may have to wait a little bit to read that. DC Comics has quietly delayed the release of Forever Evil #7 back to May 21st.

Comic Book Pull List for March 26, 2014

rocky-and-bullwinkle-1I keep doing these pull lists every week but I keep forgetting to make time to get to the local comic book shop. Maybe that’s a good thing since my wallet is going to hurt a bit from being about two months behind on picking up my file. That’s not going to be a fun visit.

Anyway, Dynamite has what might end up being the most divisive comic of the week. It’s a Brony parody one-shot called My Little Phoney: A Brony Adventure. Shockingly, there aren’t any My Little Pony comics to counter with this week. Otherwise, I would have had one here.

Two of DC’s Forever Evil companion series come to an end this week. Forever Evil: ARGUS and Forever Evil: Rogues’ Rebellion both conclude in their 6th issue. Marvel continues to bring back classic comic series with Silver Surfer #1. And IDW has my pick of the week with a rather authentic looking Rocky & Bullwinkle #1.

Comic Book Pull List for March 19, 2014

buffy-the-vampire-slayer-season-ten-1This week, everybody launches everything in the pull list. Marvel relaunches a couple of iconic series with first issues of Daredevil and the All-New Ghost Rider. DC can’t match that in terms of launches but they do have a new American Vampire story in American Vampire: Second Cycle #1.

Meanwhile, over at Dark Horse, they have a couple of new licensed series for you. Joss Whedon gets another new Dark Horse series to go along with the Serenity series with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Ten #1. They also have a video game series with the debut of The Witcher #1. It’s a five-issue miniseries that would have been perfect if CD Projekt Red didn’t just delay The Witcher 3 to 2015.
