Game Trailers Roundup for November 9, 2015

This week is a pretty quiet week in the world of video games. There’s only four major games coming out this week. On Tuesday, Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void are all launching. If you’re not broke, there’s also Football Manager 2016 coming out on Friday (it’s next on my to-review list).

Besides those trailers, EA and Blizzard were busy over the last week. Blizzard has new trailers for World of Warcraft and Overwatch. EA counters with the first trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda, a ME tie-in with Plants vs. Zombies 2 and one for the first Battlefront expansion.

Doctor Who: The Zygon Inversion Review

doctor-who-the-zygon-inversion-headerFor the fourth time this season, we have a two-part episode. While I was disappointed with the last two multi-episode stories, this one is a return to form. When you stretch a story over multiple episodes, there has to be enough content to fill those episodes. While The Zygon Inversion was a bit light compared to The Zygon Invasion, it certainly made the whole hour-and-a-half feel like it was worth watching.

Geek Links of the Week

The government of New Zealand has released the text of the whole Trans-Pacific Partnership. I’m trying to find a big analysis of it but it’s so big that people are just writing lengthy pieces on small aspects. [New Zealand  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade]

This week in good news, Disney and JJ Abrams showed an early cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to a dying fan. [Furious Fan Boys]

Before this summer, how many people heard of Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars? You may have now that Psyonix hit it big with the release of Rocket League. It wasn’t an easy road to success for the dev. [Eurogamer]

I’ve never heard of this new social network tsu.co but Facebook has. They’re banning all mentions of the new invite-only social network from their network. Shameless begging: If anyone has a way of hooking a blogger up with an invite, my email’s in the about page. [CNN Money]

Comcast threw shade at Google Fiber. Comcast’s customers quickly threw it right back at them. [BGR]

Tales from the Borderlands – Episode Five Review: End of the Road

tales-from-the-borderlands-episode-five-headerIt took them a while but Telltale has finally completed the Tales from the Borderlands series just as they got Minecraft: Story Mode off the ground. It’s fitting that one of Telltale’s game spin-offs ends as another begins. From what I understand of Minecraft: Story Mode (review coming soon), it’s apparently designed to appeal mostly to kids which is how I would peg the stereotypical audience of Minecraft proper.

I look at Tales from the Borderlands in a similar way. No, it’s not a kids’ game but it is a game designed to appeal to the audience of the proper game that it’s based on. In its final episode, though, Tales from the Borderlands finally clicks in the way we’ve gotten used to from Telltale Games.

Rumours Say Overwatch is Coming to Consoles for $60

overwatch-wallpaperOne of the hottest tickets in gaming right now is an invite into the closed beta of Blizzard’s new first-person shooter, Overwatch. One of the quiet sub-plots is speculation over what the business model will be. With early comparisons of Overwatch being to Valve’s free-to-play Team Fortress 2, it was expected that Overwatch would also be free-to-play.

However, a Game Informer report suggests that Overwatch won’t be free-to-play. At least, not at launch. Sources tell them to expect it to be a $60 full price release.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Character Posters Unveiled

We’re just six weeks away from the premiere of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. From the time this post went up to the earliest EST showings at 7:00 PM on December 17th, that’s only 1,018 hours. It’s not like I’m counting down but I’m keeping a close eye on the ever slowing movement of my clock and calendar.

Anyway, to celebrate the six weeks remaining mark, Disney has unveiled five new character posters featuring Leia, Han, Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren. All five have their right eyes covered in the posters. I wonder if that’s foreshadowing something.

WRC 5 Review: Dirty Rally

wrc5-headerOne of our unanticipated annual traditions on et geekera is the review of some annual sports franchises in the fall. In the next little bit, we’ll review Football Manager 2016 (the third entry we’ve reviewed in our under three years of existence) and Franchise Hockey Manager 2 will be the latest addition to the lineup of sport reviews. But the one I’ve been doing the longest between etg and The Lowdown is WRC. After a year’s hiatus, the World Rally Championship game is back. While much has changed, a lot still stays the same.
