Are Marvel and Star Wars Coming to Kingdom Hearts 3?

kingdom-hearts-3-bannerIt’s been over eight years since Kingdom Hearts 2 came out and things at Disney have changed quite a bit in that time. They’ve added a few new franchises and made three major corporate acquisitions, including Pixar, Marvel and LucasFilm. So what does that mean for the eventual Kingdom Hearts 3? The sky’s the limit.

In an interview with Kotaku UK, Tai Yasue, co-director and game designer of Kingdom Hearts 3, told the publication that no Disney-owned property was off-limits for use in Kingdom Hearts 3.

Yasue said, “I can’t go into specifics, but there’s a LOT of new Disney stuff and we have our plates full. There’s a lot to consider – we’re looking at all of Disney, the new ones as well, they have a lot of pull and draw… Nothing’s off-limits, we’re considering all of the worlds. There are so many wonderful concepts. We’re happy about that, but at the same time it’s really tough to choose.”

While Yasue didn’t go into specifics, one can easily infer that Disney has opened up the proverbial vault to Square Enix in developing KH3. While not all of Disney’s new and newly acquired intellectual properties will make an appearance in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts game, it seems very likely that we’ll see some of them appear in the game if they fit the story.

Funnily enough, while I absolutely loved Kingdom Hearts 1, I never did get around to playing Kingdom Hearts 2. While I was a big JRPG fan, especially the Final Fantasy series, KH1 was really my first introduction to the concept of an action RPG. It was going to be a great game regardless of the addition of Disney properties. In hindsight, I think I might have really appreciated the inclusion of Disney in the game, even if I didn’t admit it. If KH3 wants to succeed, it has to be a great game first. Nostalgia won’t carry a game very far. After all, that’s what the first KH games did.

Also, is SqEnix going to use this as an opportunity to shove more Final Fantasy XIII down our throats? Please don’t.

  1. I would LOVE if they added Star Wars and Marvel to the third Kingdom Hearts game! The first two were amazing and I have been “patiently” waiting for the third,
